A long time ago, there was a very silly thief(小偷). Do you know what he did one day? 

When he wanted to steal the bell(铃铛)on his neighbour's door, he walked up to the door, took hold of(抓住) the bell and pulled hard. The bell made a very loud noise. The thief was afraid and went home. 

Then he sat down to think, "I must do something about the noise. "He thought and thought. At last he had an idea. "Ah, I'll put some cotton(棉花) in my ears. Then I won't be able to hear the noise. " The next day, he went to the door of his neighbour, and took hold of the bell. This time he pulled even harder. The bell rang loudly, but the thief did not hear anything. With another hard pull, he got the bell out. Just then the neighbour came out.

"Steal my bell? I'll teach you a lesson, "the angry man shouted. And he hit the thief on the nose.

The silly thief did not know how the neighbour found out he was stealing the bell. "Why did he come out just then?" he wondered. Isn't he stupid?

Most of us have experienced unforgettable moments in our lives. The moment that I will never forget happened when I was fifteen.

For the first fifteen years of my life, I was the only child in my family. I didn't have any siblings. Luckily, I had always had my parents, who loved and cared about me a lot. They helped solve any problems I met and they did everything for me. What I had never really thought about was that, someday, one of them would no longer be there for me.

One day, I found out that my mother was pregnant(怀孕的), and it was big news in my family. Everyone was excited and happy, especially me. I imagined that I would have a baby brother, and I thought about playing and having fun with him. One day after school, when I ran to the hospital, my brother had already been born. But my mother was still inside the operating room, while my father waited worriedly outside. After waiting for a long time, the doctor came out and told us that they had stopped the bleeding(流血). He told us not to worry and my mother would be fine.

Many thoughts flashed through my mind. I could only imagine that my life would be full of darkness, sadness and hopelessness. I would never again have the chance to enjoy the love of my mother. During these fifteen years, my mother was always around like my dearest friend, watching over me, no matter what happened. I could not imagine how I was possibly going to live without her.

Today, my brother is almost two years old. On the day of his birthday, I always remember

this unforgettable event in my life. I think I'm a really lucky person, with great parents and a lovely brother.

Christie lives far from her high school. She travels 50 minutes on the train to get there from her house. Christie has many ways to pass the time when she is on the train to and from her school. She can do one of the following:

Christie never sleeps on the train on Friday mornings, because she has tests that day, and she likes to study on the train. She often writes to three different friends. She sends them each letters about twice a month. If Christie reads a novel on the way to school, she won't read it on the way home.

One day during the Spring Festival, I was taking a walk near my house when suddenly there came a voice," Excuse me, sir." I turned around and saw an old beggar(乞丐)."Did you1 some money, about fifty yuan, around here? I lost it just now." He looked at me and2 my reply. "Sorry, I didn't, " I answered. He went away saying in a low voice, "Where is it?3 should I do now? I really need the money."

X-rays were discovered in 1895 by a German professor, Wilhelm Roentgen. People all over the world were amazed by his invention, the X-ray machine. This invention was so important that Roentgen won the first Nobel Prize for Physics in 1901.

The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell, a doctor and speech teacher. The first phone call was made by Bell in 

1876. He got acid (酸) on his pants by accident and wanted his partner, Thomas Watson, to help him. The first words spoken on the telephone were "Mr. Watson, come here! I need you!"

Television was invented in 1926 by John Logie Baird, a Scottish inventor. Baird's television certainly didn't look like a television today! Electronic televisions like the ones we have today were invented by Vladimir Zworykin in the 1920s in the United States.

The first computer was built in 1946 by two American engineers, J. Presper Eckert and John W. Mauchly. It was developed for the army, and it was so large that it took up a whole room! Later, in 1971, the "microchip" was invented, and small home computers were first produced for personal use. Today computers are used in almost everything we do and are found almost everywhere we go.
