Jack is my best friend. He is in a new school.He likes it very much. It's not far from his home. And it usually takes him 10minutes to get to school by bike. School begins at 8: 00 every morning. Butthese days Jack is often late for school. This morning, he is late again. Theteacher is very angry.

   "How do you usually come to school?" asks the teacher. "By bike." Jack answers. "What time do you usually get up?""At 6: 30." "Well, it's not late. What time do you usually leavehome?" "I leave home at 7: 55." "Why not leave home earlier?" "My mother is ill (生病的). She stays in bed all day. My grandfather was born in 1932 and grew up in a poor village in Jinhua, China. At the age of 14, he went to  {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(法国) to make a living. He was the first person in his village to go abroad. When he  {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(到达) in Paris, he realised it was  {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(困难的)for a foreigner to find a good job because he could speak little French. He wanted to go to a language school but he couldn't  {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(买得起,付得起) it. Later, he worked in a small restaurant, cleaning up the tables, washing the dishes and sweeping the floors. Slowly, he  {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(改进;改善) his French by communicating with others. He was so hard-working and active that his boss was  {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(开心的;满足的) with him. So he sent my grandfather to a local school. My grandfather  {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(参加) a big company at the age of 24. Life became  {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(更容易的).

My grandfather kept working hard and finally made his  {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(梦想) come true. Things do not come easily in life. That is what I have learnt from my grandfather. I am really  {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(感到自豪的;感到骄傲的) of him. Now our family live in Paris happily.

When I was a child, watermelon (西瓜) was too expensive for my family. One of my father's friends, Bernie,was a rich businessman. He owned a large fruit store in another place.

Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived, Bernie would give us a call. My father and I would go to Bernie's place. We would sit on the dock (码头) happily and get ready for a big meal.

Bernie would take a big watermelon out, cut it up, give us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we three would put our faces into the watermelon, eating it happily.

In my father's eyes, Bernie was a real rich man. I always thought it was because he was a successful businessman. Later I learned that it was not Bernie's money that made my father think like that. My father thought he was rich because of the way he lived his life. Bernie knew when to stop working, get together with friends and enjoy his "watermelon".

When I grew up, because I was too busy making money as a doctor, I forgot the lesson I once learned on the dock. Well, now I've relearned it. Though (尽管) I'm still busy working as a doctor, I will try to slow down and take the time to enjoy the small pleasures (快乐) of my life.

A farmer had a friend and his friend was famous for growing wonderful apple trees．

One day, the farmer's friend gave him a young apple tree and told him to take it home and plant it．

The farmer loved the gift. But when he got home, he did not know where to plant it. He was afraid that if he planted the tree near the road, strangers would steal the apples. If he planted the tree in one of his fields, his neighbors would come at night and steal the apples. If he planted the tree near his house, his children would take the apples. Finally he planted the tree in his wood．Nobody could see it, but there was no sunlight in his wood, the tree soon died．

Later, the friend asked the farmer why he planted the tree in such a poor place. " What's the difference？"the farmer said angrily. "If I plant the tree near the road, strangers may steal the apples．If I plant the tree in one of my fields, my neighbors may come at night and steal the apples． If I plant the tree near my house, my children may take the apples．"

"Yes," said the friend， "but at least someone could enjoy the apples. Now no one could eat the apples, and the apple tree died!"

I hoped to be set free one day,so I was nice to the Lilliputians.Gradually,     ▲     .Sometimes the children even played hide-and-seek in my hair.

One day,the king said to me,"Gulliver,I invite you to watch an important performance.It is a contest called Rope Dancing".In the contest,a thin rope was tied between two poles very high above the ground.People had to dance on this rope.Each dancer tried to jump higher than the others.I had never seen such a dangerous sport.

"Your Majesty,"I said,"many dancers must fall and be hurt or killed."

"Yes,"he replied,"But I will give the best jobs in my kingdom to the men who are not afraid and jump the highest."What a strange way to choose who will work for the country!"I thought.

Then,as the king watched,I tied each corner of my handkerchief to a strong stick, and pushed the four sticks into the ground.My handkerchief was now under the rope but above the ground.Any dancer who fell would land on the handkerchief and not get hurt. The king was very pleased with my invention.His family and many other people watched the rope dancing.

Would you and the queen like to see better?"I asked the king.I gently put them on my hand and held it beside the rope.They had a good view of the dancers.One very skilled performer held on to the rope and flipped(翻转)his body right over it.The king and the queen clapped loudly and cheered.Later the king told me that he made this man one of his chief(首要的)advisors.

The king and I met often.He seemed to enjoy our conversations.One day,I said again,"Your Majesty, please set me free."This time he answered,"I have talked to my

advisors.We agree that you have been good to our people."
