Have you ever seen a capybara (水豚)? The capybara is a large, heavy animal. An adult capybara is about the size of a medium dog. The average {#blank#}1{#/blank#} is around 45 kilograms.

They {#blank#}2{#/blank#} their home near lakes, rivers and ponds. Their round bodies are {#blank#}3{#/blank#} in reddish-brown fur (毛皮) that dries out quickly on land. When swimming, they are able to survey the above-water conditions {#blank#}4{#/blank#} their small eves. noses and hairless ears. They are also {#blank#}5{#/blank#} swimmers. They can hide under the water for up to five minutes. 

Have you ever unlocked a Hello Bike? Have you ever used Meituan to order a meal? Have you ever enjoyed watching the short-form videos on Douyin? Well, if no one had invented the cell phone, none of these would have been possible.

Luckily, someone did invent the cell phone. That person is Martin Cooper, and he did that 51 years ago, in 1973.

Cooper used to work for Motorola. In the 1970s, the company was competing with AT&T, a larger company, to make a cell phone system. Cooper didn't think Motorola's product was good enough. He didn't like AT&T's idea of a car phone, either. The man wanted to give the world something new. He wanted to make it possible for people to talk on their phones anywhere.

It took Cooper and his team 90 days to design (设计) the world's first cell phone. The product was called DynaTAC. People could talk on it for 25 minutes before its battery (电池) died. The phone's short battery life wasn't a big problem, Cooper once joked. Why? Well, the phone was too heavy (1, 100 grams) to hold in hand for too long!

On April 3, 1973, Cooper made the world's first public cell phone call. He called Joel Engel, an AT&T manager. Cooper told Engel, "I'm calling you on a cell phone. It's a real, handheld cell phone." On the other end of the line, there was only silence.

Cell phones have changed a lot since that first call. They're much smaller and can do many more things. Cooper, now 96, is surprised at the progress. But the man has also kept thinking about life in the future. "I must keep learning all my life," he says. "Or I'll lose the ability to learn-that would be terrible!"

The top﹣selling album（唱片），Songs of the Humpback Whale，was made public in 1970. This collection of nature recordings changed the way many people thought about whales，and it helped save thousands of wha les. 

The album might never have been made without a sound engineer named Frank Watlington. In the 1960s，Watlington was making underwater recordings when he noticed some strange，deep sounds. He realized they were coming from whales. Watlington played the recordings for a pair of scientists named Roger Payne and Katy Payne. When they listened，they fell in love with these beautiful voices at once. 

Katy Payne studied music as well as animals，and she was greatly surprised by how the whales communicated using sounds like an opera singer. She also noticed another interesting fact：the sounds had clear patterns. According to scientists，an animal sound with a repeating pattern is called a song. Some scientists even compared these singing animals to musicians. 

The Paynes thought that other people should also hear the beauty of the whales' songs. So Roger made the recordings into an album. The time when the album came out，whales were often caught，killed and traded for money. Some kinds were even in danger of dying out. Most people had never thought that whales could communicate through songs. But after hearing the album，they began to think differently. 

The album led people to take action to save whales. Musicians began using whale songs in their music，and whales were included in movies and television shows. In 1982，a ban to stop deep﹣sea whaling was made. Before it，in the 1950s and 1960s，more than fifty thousand whales per year were killed. After it，the number went down below two thousand. 

It might seem impossible that just one album could help save the lives of so many whales. But this album told people secrets about whales that had long been hidden under the sea. It allowed whales to finally share their songs with the human world. 

Travelling is not always happy, at least for the buddies in the movie Green Book. The popular film won Best Picture at the 91st Academy Awards on Feb. 25. 

The movie was adapted from the true story of a road trip through the southern US in the early 1960s. In the film, the black pianist Don Shirley hires Italian- American Tony Vallelonga to drive him to performances, but they face problems because of Shirley's skin colour. These problems lead them to form a special friendship. 

"There's something so deeply right about this movie, so true to the time," wrote US film critic Mick LaSalle. The time LaSalle is talking about was between late 1870s and 1960s, a very different period in US history. Many parts of the country had Jim Crow Laws (《吉姆·克劳法》) , which allowed racial segregation (种族隔离) . These laws made life and travel ____ for African- Americans. They couldn't use certain hotels, restaurants, or even gas stations. They had to be indoors after sunset or they might be put into prison. Even black celebrities (名人) had to follow the laws. 

But in 1936, a black mail carrier named Victor H. Green had an idea. He made a list of friendly businesses in New York City. He published the list as a small book with a green cover. The Green Book helped African- Americans travel more safely. Then, in 1964, Jim Crow Lawswent away. The book went away, too. 

Today many US people still remember the time of Jim Crow. But they probably don't know about the Green Book. It's a forgotten part of the story. Thanks to this movie, maybe people can remember it again. 

2nd March is National Old Stuff Day(旧物日) in the US. It is all about old stuff — things you used have been forgotten for ages in your home. You must have some old stuff around. And today is all about enjoying it and reusing(再次使用) it. Because what's better than finding something really great from days gone by?

It's so easy to forget things you have. If we don't use them every day, some things can be put away and stay there. And that's not just the things in your home — technology grows so quickly that new toys come out all the time, and new books keep coming out. In the age of new information, we can have so many things easily. Today is all about remembering the things we left behind. 

We've learnt to value what age can bring to things. Wines, for example, are more valuable and tastier as they grow older. It's certain that old things still have their uses, value or charm. People today will pay a lot of money for stamps, toys, video games, board games, books, coins, and clothes of yesterday. 

You can really get into the charm of old things by visiting a junk shop(旧货店). Another person's old stuff could be your new stuff! Or maybe now is a good day to clean up! Old stuff could become a great gift for someone else, or you could always send your old things to a charity(慈善机构). If you're free, you can turn your old clothes into new ones with just a little change. 

Today could be a good day to visit your elder families. You could ask your grandparents to tell you stories about family history, their childhood and their youth. Learn about what was going on in the world when they were growing up. 

Most of all, remember that today's new stuff will one day be old stuff. 

On October 1st, the first day of China's National Day holiday, a wonderful new movie called A Tapestry of A Legendary Land (《只此青绿》) was shown in the cinemas. This film is a special mix of dance and movie magic!

The story is based on a famous dance poem drama (舞蹈诗剧). It tells us about Wang Ximeng, a painter from the Northern Song Dynasty (90-1127). He was a talent and loved mountains and rivers. When he was only 18, he tried to finish the famous A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains (《千里江山图》).

The movie brings Wang Ximeng's short life to audiences, showing him as a young and smart person. We can learn about his story through the eyes of actors. And there is a special character called "Green" in this film. Green represents (代表) the mountains and rivers in the painting.

The dance poem drama first started in Beijing in 2021 and was performed almost 600 times. It is more and more popular in China even around the world. Chinese culture is ready to shine on the world stage.
