Once, in a small village, lived a family with two children, James and Jack. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} of them loved painting very much, but the family was so {#blank#}2{#/blank#} that it was impossible to send both of them to study at the art college at the same time. After many discussions, the two boys finally worked {#blank#}3{#/blank#} a plan. They would throw a coin. The loser would go to work in the mines（矿井） to support his brother's studies at the college. Then, when the brother at college {#blank#}4{#/blank#} his studies after four years, he would support the other brother's college studies.

    James {#blank#}5{#/blank#}, and so Jack went down into the mines. James worked with all his heart, and his paintings were soon much {#blank#}6{#/blank#} than those of most of his teachers. By the time he graduated, he was beginning to make a lot of money from his paintings.

    When James returned, the family held a big dinner to {#blank#}7{#/blank#} his great success. Soon after {#blank#}8{#/blank#} dinner began, James stood up from his seat to drink a toast to his dear brother. He said, "Jack, now you can go to the art college and your dream will come true. I will take care of you."

{#blank#}9{#/blank#} Jack said softly, "Brother, the four years in the mines has done too much to my hands, so it's too late. Now I can't even hold a glass."

James was heart-broken. One hour {#blank#}10{#/blank#}, he drew a simple picture of his brother's hands. This drawing is today known as the famous picture named The Praying Hands.

I live in Taipa, a community (社区) in Macau (澳门). My house in Taipa is very good. There are two large stores, a bank and a post office in the community. And there are a lot of great restaurants. The Sichuan restaurant is my favourite. I can get a bowl (碗) of noodles with chicken for about ten yuan in that restaurant. There is a park with a small river, gardens and trees near my house. It's very beautiful. I go running in the park every morning.

I wasn't in Macau in 2012. I was in Hong Kong at that time. My apartment (公寓) in Hong Kong was quite small. The apartment was on a busy street. There were many cars on the street. And there was no supermarket near my home. And the people there were very busy. I don't like to live in that place.

I am happy with my new house.

People often think of the North Pole and the South Pole as similar frozen wastelands. They are both places with very cold temperatures and few people live there. However, the North and South Poles are not much alike as people may imagine.

The North Pole has no land, only thick ice. Temperatures seldom go above 32°F, at which water turns into ice. Most of the time, it stays below zero. In winter temperatures are usually as low as-30 F.

Although conditions were very poor, people tried for many centuries to reach the North Pole. More than 100 years ago, two men, Robert Peary and Mathew Henson, were able to get to this environment full of troubles and difficulties. They reached the North Pole on March 8th, 1909. It was really a hard trip for them.

There are few things more dangerous than crossing the Arctic on foot. People who stayed there may face many problems: very cold temperatures, sudden storms, and even hunger. Most of the area is uninhabited. Few people can live in such a difficult place.

People might think that with such low temperatures for most of the year, the ice would be thick and hard. However, this is not true in the Arctic. The movement of the ocean water under the ice may often cause many different changes on the surface. Sometimes the ice breaks into two opening lanes of water called "leads". Anyone who falls into a lead can be frozen to death in a few minutes.

There are about 300 Asian (亚 洲 的) elephants in China now. They're in great danger, so we should learn more about Asian elephants to protect them better. 

Mr. and Mrs. Crum lived in a quiet place. They kept animals and grew vegetables to make a living. Though they were rich, they were 1 . Why? They didn't have a 2 . This summer they grew pumpkins（南瓜）. 3 , there was hardly any 4 the whole（整个的） summer. They had to water them twice a week. 

When autumn came, they started to 5 the pumpkins. When Mrs. Crum picked a large pumpkin, she heard a voice. "I have grown up. It's time 6 out. " Mr. and Mrs. Crum were 7 . They looked around but found 8 . After a while, a baby jumped 9 the pumpkin. Their dream came true!

My teachers all thought I was the worst student in my class. My family also had 1 same idea as my teachers. When I was going to give up, a new teacher, Miss White, came to our school. She 2 young, beautiful and knowledgeable.

One day, I was sitting alone in my classroom. There was nobody 3 there. Miss White came in, came up to me and talked to me 4 .

"Do you think I can go to college?" I didn't know why I asked 5 question. I thought she must say "no", just as what other people always said to me. But she said，"Dear, you can do what you want to do. Just try 6 you'll get closer to success. I believe you are the best!"

I was deeply moved by her words. I decided 7 hard. From then on, we became good friends. She often helped me 8 my study in her free time. In the end, I did 9 in my study and went to a good college. Miss White is an angel (天使). Her words kept 10 going forward. She helped me to see that I can be successful in life.
