Now more than one billion people in China speak putonghua, or Mandarin, as their first language. At the same time, dongbeihua, or northeast dialect (方言), has become more popular. The dialect makes even the most serious daily conversations sound fun.

Ms Ann, a Chinese language teacher, opened a class to teach middle school students dongbeihua in Heilongjiang Province. "I just hope to help the students learn more about the culture of their home town," said Ms Ann.

"It is important to inherit (继承) the northeast dialect in a new form,"she said. "For most students, they are speaking Mandarin or even English to adapt(适应) to society. They don't pay more attention to the dialect or the culture behind it. That's a pity. They need to pass it on."

Now there are over thirty students in her class. At first, some students believed it would not be difficult for the northeasterners to speak dongbeihua well. However, with the deepening of the class, the students could only speak some easy words and knew little about the meaning behind them. To increase students' interest, Ms Ann has been trying different ways. For example, she chose video clips from interesting cartoons for her students to dub (配音) them into dongbeihua.

Both Mandarin and dialect are the carriers (载体) of Chinese language and culture. Learning the dialect is learning our local culture and history.

Loni loved her town where she lived with her grandma，From their window，Loni and her grandma watched people walk and run along the1 street.At the crossing.a guide dog was helping its owner2 the street." Grandma，I love living here.I hope our town will never3 ." said Loni.

"We have a great town，Loni"smiled Grandma ."But did you know that in the past，there were only4 here？It looked very different when my great— grandmother（曾祖母） was a little girl."Grandma showed Loni a picture of a young girl standing next to a barn（谷仓）.Grandma explained that her great— grandmother's family had cows5 was different back then .There were only dusty（布满灰尘的） roads in the town with a river flowing through，and people mainly went on trip by boat，by horse or on foot.

"What happened to all the farms and the dusty roads？"asked Loni."More people came .Overtime，farmers sold their6 to builders who built stores and schools and paved the roads.It7 a town.People moved here to find jobs." said Grandma.

When grandma's mother was born，cars and horses shared the road .Years later，when grandma was born8 seen on the street any more.

 The summer holiday is over. It's true that time always flies fast. During the holiday, the weather was hot and I could not do much work, but I lived happily. 

 As the afternoon was hot, I did my work in the morning. I used to get up at 6:30 and take a walk in the garden for half an hour. After breakfast, I began reading English and Chinese and worked on some maths problems. These took me three hours or more. I worked quite hard and made good progress(进步). 

I spent the afternoon outside. I went to swim and it was fun. I would not go home until it was about five or six o' clock. Sometimes a friend of mine would come to see me and we would spend some hours listening to music. 

 In this way I spent my holiday happily. And I not only made up some of my lessons, but also became a good swimmer. Now I am in good health and high spirits.
