Recently, researchers have found that dolphins know their own names much like people. Dolphins talk to one another with whistles (口哨) and calls. Scientists have known that the animals also use unusual whistles to name each other. They had thought that dolphins only heard each other's voices. However, the scientists didn't know that dolphins listen for their names too. 

To test this idea, the researchers caught 14 dolphins and recorded their name calls. The scientists then copied each dolphin's voice. When the changed recordings were played, the dolphins replied strongly to the names of their relatives and close group members. They paid no attention to the names of dolphins they did not know. 

Dolphins live in large groups that grow and change. Each dolphin's unusual whistle helps it quickly find a friend or a family member, or call for help. Understanding their calls requires learning. It's a skill that's seen in very few animals, which include humans, elephants and bats. 

Elephants, for example, communicate with sounds. Their sounds can be heard by other elephants miles away. Dolphins, too, communicate with each other by making sounds like this. 

Elephants also communicate by moving their head, feet and trunk. In much the same way, dolphins communicate through their movements. They often touch each other to express friendship. 

Unlike dolphins, elephants also communicate through their great sense of smell. They can recognize other elephants through the smells they have. 

Why do dolphins and elephants share the gift of communication? Scientists think it may be because they are social and smart animals. Both have strong family relationship. Now, whether they also have nicknames is another question! 

Learning about the environment is very important. There are many good books that will help you learn. To get started, ask your teacher or a librarian for some suggestions. You can also look at some good websites with information about the environment and climate change. Climate change may be a big problem, but there are many little things we can do to make a difference.

Driving a car or using electricity is not wrong. We just have to be smart about it. Some people use less energy by carpooling. For example,four people can ride together in one car instead of driving four cars to work. Whenever we use electricity, we put greenhouse gases into the air. By turning offlights, the television and the computer when they aren't needed, you can help a lot.

Don't buy products that use too much energy. Some products, like certain cars, are made specially to save energy. These don't pollute as much, either. Products like computers, TVs, and VCRs with the ENERGY STAR label(标签)R are made to save energy. Buying products with these labels will help protect the environment.

Buy recyclable products instead of (代替) non-recyclable ones. Recyclable products are usually made out of things that have already been used. It usually takes less energy to make recyclable products than to make new ones. So when you go shopping, look for the recycle mark on the package—three arrows that make a circle. The less energy we use, the better.

A group of students and teachers from the U. S recently attended a study tour to Hebei. The students from Muscatine High School are part of a China program that will invite 50,000 American youths to China within five years for exchanges and study. They are the second group from the school. North China's Hebei Province and the U. S. state of Iowa signed their sister-state relationship in 1983.

On Sunday, Ann Castle, along with 31 classmates and eight teachers, took part in a study tour in Hebei from April 19 to 22, 2024. The students from both schools formed one-on-one friendly partnerships.

Ann Castle visited the home of Zhang Xinyi, a senior student at Shijiazhuang Foreign Language School. Before this, Ann Castle kept herself in learning Chinese Wushu, watching traditional Chinese dances in a park, and trying popular Chinese food. In Zhang's bedroom, the two girls found many common topics of interest. Pipa, a traditional Chinese musical instrument particularly attracted Castle's attention. "This instrument has been in China for 2,000 years. It's similar to a guitar but a bit harder to learn," Zhang told her. After Castle expressed her willing to have a try, Zhang helped her put on the pipa fingernails and shared some playing techniques. Soon, the sound of pipa filled the room. They also tasted tea and desserts, looked through family photo albums, and shared stories about their families. Everything looked so beautiful. "They've been very warm-hearted and friendly. It's been an unforgettable experience," said Castle.

Teachers and students from Shijiazhuang Foreign Language School prepared a welcome concert for the Americans filled with Chinese elements. The American students also learned an ancient Chinese poem, practiced ping pong, made dumplings, planted friendship trees and visited the Great Wall. Colin Millage, a student from America, said having a tree together with his Chinese friend is more than a friendship between them. It is a friendship between the two nations.

"We hoped the students from both countries would have enough opportunity to communicate with and affect each other during the period of just over three days," said Liu Feng, the headteacher from China. According to Scott Castle, the headteacher from America, several meetings were especially held to choose the exchange students "I have great hope for the future with these kids and the kids they've been working with."

 Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining

I was on a train in Switzerland. The train came to a stop and a man said something, but I didn't know the language. Everyone started to get out of the train. An old woman saw me still sitting there. She could speak a little English and told me what the man said. She asked me where I was going. Then she talked with some other people, then came back, and told me that we had to take other trains to get there.

I was really lucky to meet the old woman. because I knew I couldn't take the right train by myself. Then we went from one train station to the next. The old woman was really kind. When we got to the last station, we left and said goodbye. Luckily, I got on my train to Rome in time. The old woman told me she also had to catch another train. I found that she needed to spend two hours going back home.

I was moved(感动) that day. An old woman spent so much time on trains just to help out a stranger.

Stephen Hawking, a disabled man with a strong will, who died on March 14, 2018, was born in Oxford, UK, in 1942. He was a world famous scientist and expert on space and time. Stephen was trying to find the answers to some very big questions, such as: How did the universe begin? How will it end? 

When he was a student at university, Stephen studied math and science. Then, at the age of twenty, he became very ill. He was so young, but the doctors said to his family, "He has only two more years to live. " 

The doctors were wrong. He didn't die. He couldn't walk, but he used a wheelchair. He talked with the help of a computer. After Oxford, Stephen went to Cambridge University. Three years later, in 1965, he became a doctor of philosophy (哲学). 

Because of his health problems, it was difficult for him to draw diagrams or to write. So he started to think in pictures. With this new way of thinking, he became one of the most famous scientists in the world. Then in 1988, he wrote his first important book, A Brief History of Time. It sold about 25 million copies in about 40 different languages. 

Stephen Hawking made great achievements in cosmology with his studies searching the answers to the Big Bang and Black Hole in the universe, which brought him great fame as a leading figure in the science world even though he became totally unable to move in two thirds of his whole life.
