Joel Sartore is a writer, teacher, and photographer. His words and beautiful images show his love of photography and of the natural world. 

Question 1: How did you become a National Geographic photographer?

My first job was for a newspaper. After a few years there, I met a National Geographic photographer. He liked my photos and said I should send some to the magazine. So I did. That led to a one—day job. And that led to a nine—day job, and so on.

To get into National Geographic, you have to give them something they don't have. It's not enough just to be a great photographer. You also have to be a scientist, for example, or be able to dive under sea ice, or spend maybe several days in a tree. 

Question 3: Is it hard to get a job as a photographer today?

It's now harder to work for magazines. Technology makes it easy to take good pictures, which means there are more photos and photographers. Also, the Web is filled with photos from all around the world that are free, or cost very little. These photos are often good enough to be put in books and magazines. What the magazines need to do these days is to pay for these photos. 

Question 4: I want to be a photographer. Do you have any advice for me?

Advice? Well, work hard. Be passionate (热情的)about every project you work on. Take lots of pictures in different situations. Look at others' photos thoughtfully and learn from them. And be curious about everything. There's something to photograph everywhere. 

How do you get to school?Do you walk or r{#blank#}1{#/blank#}a bike? Do you go by bus or by train?For many students，it is easy to get to school. But for the students in one small village in China，it is difficult. There is a very big river between their school and the village. There are no b{#blank#}2{#/blank#}and the river runs too quickly for boats. So these students go on a ropeway to cross the river to school. 

One 11﹣year﹣old boy，Liangliang，crosses the river every school day. But he is not afraid because he loves school. "I love s{#blank#}3{#/blank#}time with my classmates and teachers. "Many of the villagers n{#blank#}4{#/blank#} leave the village. They wish that they could find an easy way to go out. Can their d{#blank#}5{#/blank#} come true?

My friend Bobby worked in a restaurant two years ago and he didn't make much money. He had a big family to support(养), so they could only spend money on very essential（必要的）things {#blank#}1{#/blank#} food, clothes and houses. But last summer vacation, Bobby wanted to take his kids to watch a very popular show in the theater（剧院）, {#blank#}2{#/blank#} kids these days always talked about it. He knew his kids wanted to see it very much, too. 

When they arrived at the theater, Bobby walked up to the woman at the ticket counter （售票柜台）and asked, "How {#blank#}3{#/blank#} is it to get in?"

The woman said, "6 dollars for you and 3 dollars for the kids aged between 7 and 13 years old. We let them in for free if they are 6 or younger. How old are your kids?"

Bobby looked at his sons and answered, "This one is 3 years old and his big brother is 7 years old, so I think I need to {#blank#}4{#/blank#} 9 dollars for you." 

The woman looked surprised and said, "Hey, did you just win a lottery （中奖） or something? I don't know how old your kids are. You can just say that one is 3 and the o{#blank#}5{#/blank#}is 6. After all, I can't see the {#blank#}6{#/blank#} between 6-year-olds and 7-year-olds, and you can save 3 dollars."

Bobby said, "Yes, I can tell you that they are both under the age of 6, but the kids know that they are not the {#blank#}7{#/blank#} age as I told you. As their father, it's my job to set a good example （榜样）for them. In that {#blank#}8{#/blank#}, they can grow up to be a good and honest (诚实的) person. 

Then, Bobby took his two boys by the hand and they spent a wonderful afternoon.

Billy Ray Harris is a very happy man. Just a few months ago he was a homeless beggar (乞丐) on the streets of Kansas City in the USA. Now he can afford a1 of his own. Even better, he has found his long lost 2 .

This surprising story wouldn't happen3 Sarah Darling didn't stop in the street to give Billy some money. She only4 later that as well as the coins, she had also5 a large diamond ring into his cup! She had put her ring in her wallet because it was a little loose (松脱的).

When Billy saw the ring, he thought about6 it to a local jeweler (珠宝商). However, he decided to 7 it to the owner if possible. When Sarah came back the next day, he 8 the ring with a smile. Sarah and her husband wanted to reward (奖励) him for his9 , so they set up an online page to raise money. As the story 10 , the public gave more and more money.

After a few months they had 11 more than $190,000. Meanwhile, Billy was becoming a national 12 . 490 miles away, in Texas, his sister, who hadn't seen him for sixteen years, 13 his face while she was reading the 14 online. Not long afterwards they were reunited live on a TV show.
