Bill andCathy wanted to go on a holiday. They chose a place called Maldives (马尔代夫). And they decided to1therefor two weeks in spring, because they heard that the weather there would beperfect at that time. They worked very hard for several2.Finally, they made enough money for their dream3.But their trip was more like a nightmare (噩梦)!

    Theproblem4when the flight was put off because ofbad weather. They couldn't leave5night. They finally goton the plane twelve hours later! But they6fly to Maldives becausethere was a storm. They had to fly to the capital city7.There they stayed in a small hotel8the airport.

    The hotelwas next to the sea, but the sea was9dirty that they couldn'tswim in it. And the hotel swimming pool was full of leaves! The food was awful10.For breakfast there was11bread and milk! The worst part was whenthe storm came, they felt really12. Because of the bad weather,they had to stay for13night in the small hotel. And they had14todo. It was so boring. Finally, they15in Maldives three dayslater. And someone told them the weather there had been wonderful all the time!

Last year in early summer, I was walking up the hill to my house when I saw two birds, each about 60 centimeters tall, standing on the path. They didn't seem to 1 me until I was right in front of them and then they at once moved 2 into the bushes.

I was quite excited by the idea of two birds making a nest (巢) in my front yard, although I didn't really expect it 3 wild birds don't usually nest so close.

A few weeks later, the birds 4 again. I found them crouching (蜷缩) beside a tree off to the side of the path. As I moved nearer to them, I imagined that they would 5 like they did last time. But 6 they stuck out their heads and made a threatening (威胁的) croaking (呱呱叫) sound. It seemed to warn me not to go any 7 .

I didn't know 8 they were croaking at me until a short time later I made an amazing discovery — they had 9 small baby birds. 

As I moved quietly towards the birds, 10 not to make any sudden movements, they started their croaking again. They straightened their necks forward so they seemed 11 and more threatening. The mother carefully crouched down over the two chicks, and 12 them well in her feathers. 

I was watching them with 13 when I suddenly tripped and fell to the ground. The birds took this as a threat and the father raced towards me, 14 his wings to protect the mother and the chicks while making himself appear larger. 

I was 15 to have surprised them and left quickly. I was amazed by their fearless actions. Their parental natural ability kicked in and made them so brave. It is hard not to respect nature. 

When I was fourteen, I made my first visit to the United States. It wasn't the first time I had been abroad. Like most English children, I learned French at school. And I had often been to France, so I was used to speaking a foreign language to people who didn't understand French. I believed that I wouldn't have any 1 problems when I went to America. So I was really looking forward to having a nice easy holiday there.

How2 I was! The misunderstanding (误解) began at the airport. I was looking for a public telephone to call my friend Danny who had been in America for two years and told her that I had arrived. A friendly old man saw me looking confused and asked if he could 3 me.

"Yes," I said, "I want to give my friend a ring."

"Well, that's nice," he said. "Are you getting married? But aren't you a bit too 4 ?"

"Who is talking about marriage?" I replied. "I just want to give my friend a ring to tell her I've arrived. Can you tell me 5 the phone box is?"

"Oh! I see. " he said, "There's a phone downstairs."

When Danny and I met up, she explained the misunderstanding to me. Then I knew "Give somebody a ring" could mean deciding to get engaged or marry someone else. I felt shamed for myself.

"Don't worry," she said to me. "I had so many difficulties at first. There are lots of words which the Americans use differently in meaning from the British. You'll soon 6 all the funny things they say. Most of the time British and American people understand each other!

Life is not easy to most people, so when anything happens, be sure to believe in yourself. When I was young, I was {#blank#}1{#/blank#} nervous that it was hard for me to talk to anyone. My classmates often {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (laugh) at me. Then I felt very frustrated. 

I was {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (real) sad but could do nothing. Later, something happened, which changed my life. It was {#blank#}4{#/blank#} English speech contest. My mother asked me to take part {#blank#}5{#/blank#} it. What a terrible idea! It meant I had to speak in front of all the teachers and students of my school!

"Come on, boy. You should believe in yourself. You are sure to win." mother said to me. 

Then, mother and I talked about many different topics. At last, I {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (choose) the topic "Believe in yourself". I tried my {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (good) to remember all the speech and practiced it over a hundred times. With my mother's great help, I felt {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (relax) and did well in the contest. I could hardly believe my ears when the news came that I had won the {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (one) prize. 

Since then, things have changed for me. No matter what I do, I try to tell {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (me) to be confident and I will find myself. This is true not only for me but also for everybody, I think.

Have you ever heard of Zhang Hong? Since his story was known last year, his spirit {#blank#}1{#/blank#}( encourage) many people around the world.

On May 24th, 2021, 46- year- old Zhang Hong became the first blind person from Asia to climb to the top of Qomolangma, {#blank#}2{#/blank#}( high) mountain in the world.

Zhang Hong grew up in {#blank#}3{#/blank#} small village in Chongqing. At the age {#blank#}4{#/blank#}21, he lost his sight, which made him feel terrible. He had many {#blank#}5{#/blank#}( difficulty) in his everyday life.

He wanted to do something different,{#blank#}6{#/blank#} he didn't know what to do. In 2012, Zhang moved to Tibet. There, he found a job in a hospital. In the mornings, he often stopped at a park {#blank#}7{#/blank#}( do) Tai Chi(太极) before work.

One day, he met Luo Ze, a very popular {#blank#}8{#/blank#}( climb) in China. Luo talked to him about climbing Qomolangma. From then on, Zhang dreamed of climbing Qomolangma. He wanted to challenge {#blank#}9{#/blank#}( he).

He started by climbing up and down the stairs every day. Finally, with the help of a guide named Chen Tao, Zhang made his dream come true.

"I will never see the world again," says Zhang,"I {#blank#}10{#/blank#}( simple) hope that, through this, the world will see me."

Bruce has a great family. There are five people in his family. He 1 with his parents and grandparents in a big house in Guangzhou.

On weekdays, his parents go to work. They need to get up 2 in the morning, at about 6：15 a. m.
