Li Qiang is a twelve- year- old boy. He had a headache yesterday. His father took him to the nearest hospital to see a doctor. The doctor thought it was not serious and gave him some pills. The following are the instructions of the headache pills. 

"The best mianshilies in China and the best Chinese mianshilies in Shanxi." Can you imagine that in North China's Shanxi Province, there are over 280 kinds of mianshi, or cooked wheaten (小麦的) food?

Shanxi people's love for mianshiis closely connected to the local natural conditions. The dry weather on mountains and plateaus (高原) makes it a good place for growing wheat. Therefore, as time passing by, Shanxi people not only developed an eating habit for mianshi, but also invented different ways of cooking wheaten food.

Among the many Shanxi mianshi, the sliced (削的) noodle is the most famous one. It is a noodle made with a special knife. When making it, the cook needs to hold the dough (生面团) with one hand, while fast slicing the noodles into the soup pot with the other hand. The length and thickness of each sliced noodle are required to be the same. Experienced cooks can even turn the way of slicing noodle into an excellent show. They can slice 200 noodles in one minute, and make sure each noodle falls exactly into the soup pot 1.5 meters away.

In Chinese food culture, people like to give special meanings to the food. For example, they would have a bowl of Changshoumianon their birthdays, carrying good wishes for health and long life. In many places, the tradition is to serve jiaozito a person leaving home, and noodles to a person returning home, as both foods have their own important meanings.

It's never too late to learn. 66-year-old Xu Baokun is a good example to show that. The grandma learned to play the drums and got popular online because of her drum playing (打鼓).

Xu comes from Guangxi. She is a farmer. When she was young, she worked in the fields (田地) all year round. But, with age, she had some health problems. That stopped her from going here and there. As a result, she lived a boring life.

Xu's son teaches others music in Guangdong Province. Last year, he brought a drum set (架子鼓，爵士鼓，套鼓) home for Xu to play. At first, Xu thought playing the drums was too noisy. But after watching her son play a few times, she became interested in it and decided to learn to play.

Because Xu knew nothing about music, ▲ . She spent lots of time practicing playing the drums every day. Now she can play many songs. What's more, she is healthier than before thanks to drum playing.

Xu's son put her videos (录像) of drum playing online. To his surprise, Xu quickly got popular. Now Xu plays at some weddings (婚礼) and the TV station. She is anxious before she plays in front of others, but when she sees the drum set, she knows she will do a good job.

"Age is just a number," Xu said. "I'll learn more beautiful music to bring happiness to more people."

Bayika Kalidibek is 72 years old and he lives in Xinjiang. In 1972, he took over his father's position and worked as a border patrolman (护边员).

Being a border patrolman is hard. The border area has high mountains and difficult roads. Bayika got hurt (受伤) many times during patrols. He faced many problems, but he never gave up. He said, "Protecting the border is a job for all of us, not just the country's."

In 2004, his son Laqini started to work as a border patrolman. Unluckily, he gave up his life when he saved (拯救) a boy from a cold river in 

2021. He was only 41 at that time. "I'm really sad, but I'm proud (自豪的) of him," Bayika said. "Our family has protected the border for more than 70 years. We will pass down our family's tradition from one generation (一代人) to the next."

Bayika's story is touching. We should learn from the old man.
