Food waste is common in many schools. Students at Whitewater Middle School in the US once found 200 pounds (90. 7kg) of food had been thrown away after just one of their school's daily meals. They said it was both unpleasant and educational. 

A student said, "You don't realize how much food waste you're making till you see it. " To deal with this problem, Whitewater has added environmental science as a new school program this year. Teachers will lead students to do research about how food connects with the environment, poverty (贫穷) and people's health. 

Whitewater teachers make sure students know how their own eating habits are part of bigger problems. In environmental literature (文学) classes, students read books such as Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal. 

Teacher Lyman says that in language arts classes, students discuss why poor people often have less healthy food. Lyman says she wants students to ask themselves some basic questions: "What do we eat? What do we waste?

Do you get in trouble for feeding your dog on food from dinner under the table? A new study suggests that by sharing "people food"，you might actually be helping to keep your pet healthy. 

Many dogs are fed dry processed food. Science has shown that a diet(饮食)of processed food is not healthy for humans. Scientists from the University of Helsinki, in Fin-land, say this diet is not good for our pet dogs, either. 

The scientists discovered that the food a dog might find in an owner's home such as eggs, fish, meat and vegetables may be better than a diet of just dog food. This is be-cause having different kinds of food leads to more variety （多样性）in microbes, which are little living things, too small to be seen with our eyes. There are millions of them in human and animal bodies. Some are bad for us, but many are good for us, and they play important roles in helping us digest（消化) food. 

A total of 8, 500 young pet dogs took part in the study. 4, 500 of them were under 6monthsold, and the rest were between 6 and 18 months old. The owners were asked about what food they had fed their pets and how often When the dogs reached adult-hood, their owners reported that about 20%of the dogs showed CE symptoms（慢性肠胃不适症状）such as weight loss. However, if dogs had been fed a mixed diet while young, . it was 22%less possible for them to experience CE symptoms later in life. 

Dr. Anna Helm-Bjorkman told The Times of London, "Dog food on sale are described as providing a complete diet. . But what we show is that variety is important. No-body would give 12 years of the same food to a child-why should a dog be different?"

Swifts（雨燕）live mostly in the air. These small birds are among the fastest animals on Earth. In fact, swifts can fly two or three days without touching the ground! To get used to life in the sky, swifts use their speed and the saliva（唾液）in their mouths. 

Swifts can fly faster than 100 miles per hour. That's because their wings are like boomerangs（回力镖）. This shape of the wings helps them to fly fast. They can also move one wing faster than the other, which allows them to make sharp turns without slowing down. Making fast, sharp turns helps swifts catch flying bugs to eat. 

The saliva helps swifts catch bugs to feed their young. It is sticky, like glue. Swifts often fly into clouds of bugs such as mosquitoes and open their wide mouths to catch as many insects as they can. The bird collects insects in its mouth gradually and holds the insects in a sticky ball of saliva. One food ball can contain （包含）nearly 1, 000 bugs. 

Swifts also use their saliva as glue to build their nests. The birds catch feathers in the air and stick the feathers together to build a strong nest. Swifts' short feet are not fit for walking or standing on land for long. But their sharp claws allow them to stick to rocks and walls so they can take a short rest before returning to the sky.
