Now more than one billion people in China speak putonghua, or Mandarin, as their first language. At the same time, dongbeihua, or northeast dialect (方言), has become more popular. The dialect makes even the most serious daily conversations sound fun.

Ms Ann, a Chinese language teacher, opened a class to teach middle school students dongbeihua in Heilongjiang Province. "I just hope to help the students learn more about the culture of their home town," said Ms Ann.

"It is important to inherit (继承) the northeast dialect in a new form,"she said. "For most students, they are speaking Mandarin or even English to adapt(适应) to society. They don't pay more attention to the dialect or the culture behind it. That's a pity. They need to pass it on."

Now there are over thirty students in her class. At first, some students believed it would not be difficult for the northeasterners to speak dongbeihua well. However, with the deepening of the class, the students could only speak some easy words and knew little about the meaning behind them. To increase students' interest, Ms Ann has been trying different ways. For example, she chose video clips from interesting cartoons for her students to dub (配音) them into dongbeihua.

Both Mandarin and dialect are the carriers (载体) of Chinese language and culture. Learning the dialect is learning our local culture and history.

Emily Bhatnagar has always loved reading and regarded books as her best friends.  About three years ago, 16-year-old Emily's1 was diagnosed(被诊断) with cancer. The news was difficult for the family. Books became an even bigger comfort, and she started thinking about families in similar2 . When her father became well. she 3 a plan to help others. Emily started a book drive in her hometown. The purpose was to4 books and give them to kids who are treated for cancer in local hospitals.

Emily5 by putting information on social media to ask people in her area to donate(捐赠). "I was expecting maybe two or three replies from6 , " she said, "But it ended up unexpectedly. I have collected more than 10 000 books7 since the start of the book drive. "

Emily continues to8 the book drive with a little help of her parents. She hopes to develop the project one day to9 more kids. She still remembers the first time she visited children. The surprise and10  on their faces stay in her mind. She said, "It was the best day of my life, and I realized I would do this type of work forever. "

"Where was the cashier (收银员)?" I wondered. Feeling1 with having waited at the counter ( 柜 台 ) for at least 3 minutes, I quickly looked at my watch. I was afraid I2 had enough time to eat a sandwich and then rushed back to work.

When I looked around the nearly empty3 , I saw a woman cleaning a table in the corner. She looked at me coldly with sad, dark eyes.

I felt so angry that I was almost out of4 . Suddenly I remembered Mom's words. "5 you find yourself in an unpleasant situation, just think about what is missing. If someone is6 , then kindness is missing. If someone is hateful, then 7 is missing. If we will do what's missing, then we will provide whatever the situation needs."

And here I was in an unpleasant situation.8 should I do "what's missing"? What was missing was service. Should I just jump behind the counter to take the food I would order?

Just then the woman walked slowly towards me. "May I help you?" she asked, still 9 .

She looked so tired.10 , she was overworked.

I took a deep breath. With Mom's words still ringing in my11 , I gave the woman my order and smiled. "How are you doing today?"

My question seemed to 12 her. She looked at me for a second before answering. "Not too good."

"I'm sorry," I said, "I hope it gets better from right now."

She almost smiled as she handed me the food. "Thanks. I hope you're right."

I thought to 13 as I ate my sandwich. We're the same, really. We have problems and angers, we get tired and we hurt. We need to be14 to each other.

After eating, I cleaned the table cleaner than usual, and put the tray (托盘) back nicely on the stand. The woman was watching me all the time, with a big smile on her face.

"Do what's missing." What mum said really15 .I smiled back to her, too.

Alan is a middle school student. His friends, Jack, Tom, and Mike, all have a 1 , but he doesn't. It makes him feel different. 

One day, he tells them, "I have a cute black dog at my home, and2 name is Stella. She likes eating 3 and playing with balls. "

After school, Alan's friends would like to go home with him and 4 the dog.

Alan can't believe it and he runs to the yard. Oh, his mother buys him a dog. Alan thanks his mother. Then he tells the truth(真相) to his good friends and says"14 " to them. 

After Alan's friends hear his words, they smile and say" That's OK ". Then the15 boys play with the dog happily in the yard. 

 English has been popular in China for many years. Many students love learning English because it is important and interesting. The students in English Club of Yangguang school are sharing their opinions about English in class.

Li Hua thinks English is an important language which connects people from all over the world. And he believes that learning English is very important because it can help us understand the world better.

 Han Meimei said"By learning English, I can read more books and learn about the cultures and histories of different countries. I often take part in different kinds of English activities in the English Club to improve my English."

"I have learned English since I was 6 years old. English is a very important language, and I like it very much. By learning English, I can communicate with people from different countries." said Zhang Yi, a 14 - year-old boy.

 Zhao Qiang thinks English is not just a language. It's a window that allows us to see a wonderful world. He hopes to become an English teacher in the future.
