Hiking (远足) can be a great way to relax, get away and enjoy the natural beauty around us. Going on a hike sounds like a walk in the park, but there are some risks when you head out into the wilds (偏远地区). We spoke with Sgt. John Adams from the Search and Rescue unit(搜救队) to learn what you can do to keep safe.

Tell someone where you're going

Especially if you're hiking alone, it is important to make sure someone knows exactly where you're going and when you expect to be back. And the information you left with a friend or family member will make it easier for the Search and Rescue unit to find you.

Do some research and check conditions before you go

The weather can be very different even an hour from where you live, and trail(路径) conditions can change daily.

Adams suggests you should think about bringing along a personal locator beacon (人员定位标) and a whistle(哨子). He said there are several successful Search and Rescue cases in which hikers were found alive and rescued when using locators.

Don't be afraid to turn back

If you are uncomfortable, uncertain or worried about your safety at any time, be honest with yourself. Don't be afraid to call it a day and turn back. 

If worse comes to worst

Stay calm, get to a safe place and stay there. If you're lost, walking around is likely to take farther away from the known trail and make you harder to find. If you're injured, trying to move around may lead to a worse situation. If you brought a whistle, use it to let the Search and Rescue unit hear you.

I remember my first day at university very clearly.

I felt excited and happy. At the same time I was very nervous because I didn't know anyone. However, my first day at university was unforgettable..

At first, I was lost. I didn't know where to go. I had to ask a stranger where to meet other new students. He was very polite and showed me the way. I walked through some buildings, and when I arrived, I saw many students and I felt even more nervous.

It is natural that we feel nervous on the first day at university, but difficult experiences often have happy endings.

I told myself to be braver. I talked with one girl and we found that we were in the same class. We introduced ourselves. Her name was May. We did some activities together in a group. Soon, I started feeling much better.The activities helped me feel that I was part of a team and I began to feel that I was a university student.

Later, we began our classes. The teacher talked for a while and then we introduced ourselves. I met two girls. Their names were Jane and Anna. We started talking soon and became friends with each other. It was really a special day for me.

At present, many foreigners show great interest in learning Chinese idioms (成语). Terry and Kate are among them. Most Chinese idioms have four characters. For example, qingchuyulan (bluer than indigo), and houjibofa (success comes with time and effort). Terry and Kate are now reading stories behind the Chinese idioms they have learnt recently.

When I was a little boy, I was very shy. After class, I often stayed in the playground by myself and watched my 1 plying games. On weekends, I 2 went out to play with other children.

My name is Susan. I am a student of Green Middle School. It's a nice and beautiful school. Here is a map of it. 

Look at the map of our school. This is the music hall, just across from the science building. The music hall is a yellow building with two floors. We often listen to music in it. Sometimes, we have music lessons in it too. The science building is yellow too. A small shop is between the science building and the teachers' building. We can buy many kinds of school things in it. The teachers' building is white. Our teachers often correct (批改) our homework or prepare (准备) lessons in it. Behind the teachers' building is the school hall. It's new and nice. We often have parties or speeches (演讲) in it. A large sports field is next to the school hall. All the students go there and do exercises together in the morning. Every Monday we raise the flag there. The classroom building is across from the school hall and the sports field. We spend most of the time in our classroom. It's big and clean. 

I love my school. It's a beautiful place and I can learn a lot in it.
