In 2009, Shawn Seipler worked for an American technology company. His job required him to travel and visit companies all over America. One evening, he was sitting in his hotel room. He began to wonder what happened to the soap in the bathroom once he left the hotel. There was no way that it could be left in the room for someone else to use. Curious, he asked the hotel manager and was told that the used soap was thrown away and replaced. 

Shawn could not sleep that night. A quick Internet search told him that there were about 4. 6 million hotel rooms in America. If 60 percent of these were used every night, over one million bars of soap would be thrown away every day. Was this really necessary? The young man went on to read reports about the importance of handwashing. He learned that thousands of children were dying every day from diseases related to bad hygiene (卫生) . If the children washed their hands with soap, the number of deaths could be reduced by half. The following day, Shawn left his well-paid job. He approached (靠近) the Holiday Inn Hotel in Orlando and asked if he could take away their used soap. He transported it to his home, where he and his relatives began to break it down, so it could be used again. 

Shawn started his charity, Clean The World, and began distributing his recycled soap to children all over the world. His another big task was to communicate with other hotels, so he could take away their used soap. He found that he was really doing the hotels a big favour. Not only was he putting their soap to good use, but he was also preventing millions of bars of used soap from ending up in landfill (垃圾填埋地) every year. His charity was able to raise money by charging the hotels for this service. In return, the hotels could tell everyone they were part of an amazing new charity. 

Today, the charity has offices overseas and operates in China, India and Canada. Many of the biggest hotel groups in the world are working with Clean The World, helping to save lives.

Are the classrooms all the same in the world? 

In China, children have a fixed classroom. In a classroom, you can see desks and chairs in lines and many other school things in order. There are usually about 40 or more students in every class. They always face the blackboard. What are classrooms like in other countries? Let's have a look! 

In the UK, most classrooms are similar (相似的). There are usually about 30 students in every class. Usually, two children share a long desk. 

In the US, classrooms usually have single (单独的) desks for each student. There are about 15 to 25 students in a class. The US children don't have a fixed classroom. They always go to different classrooms when the classes are different. 

In Japan, students have a fixed classroom. They also have single desks. At the back of the classroom, there are places for students' clothes. At the gate of the school building, there are places for their shoes.

Today is a big day for Chen Ming. His parents ask him to meet a new English teacher, Miss Green. 

"Miss Green is not in Beijing, " Mum says. "She is in London. You can have an English class with her on the computer. "

Chen thinks it is great. He sits in front of his computer and waits for Miss Green. It is time for class. He sees Miss Green—she has long brown hair and big blue eyes. Miss Green sings the Hello Song to Chen first. 

Then Miss Green says, "Hello, my name is Jenny Green. What's your name?"

"Hello, Miss Green! My name is Chen Ming, " Chen says. 

"Nice to meet you here. Let's learn how to learn English well today. . . "

The class is very interesting. Soon（很快）, ____. Chen likes Miss Green's class very much. He wants to see Miss Green again and wants to be her friend. He thinks English is his favourite subject now. 

Robots become a bigger part of daily lives like in teaching, taking care of us, and even being our friends. Today, designers are considering how to get humans to trust robots. They pay special attention to voices, accents (口音), and dialects (方言) that robots use.

Imagine a "robot voice" in your head. Maybe it sounds like a robot from science fiction movies or TV shows. It could be robotic, unnatural, and sound like a boss. Nowadays, however, machines are starting to talk more and more like real people.

Here comes a question. Do people like robots that speak with a standard accent, or with accents and dialects from their own region? Some people think robots with standard accents sound smarter. But other researchers say robots with accents and dialects might feel more friendly and comforting. They might even seem more trustworthy (值得信任的).

To find out more, a group of researchers in Germany did a study. They wanted to know how people feel about robots based on the dialect they use. Katharina Kuhne and her team asked 120 Germans to watch a video of a small robot called Nao. Nao spoke in either standard German or the Berlin dialect.

After watching the video, the researchers asked the participants (参与者) which robot they thought was more trustworthy. Most people liked the robot that spoke in standard German, but not everyone did. If the participants spoke the Berlin dialect well and often, they thought the robot that spoke it was more trustworthy.

Kuhne's team knows there are many other factors that could influence how people feel about robots, like how they look, if the voice sounds like a man or a woman, and the meanings behind different dialects. But their study still gives us a good idea of how language can change the ways we interact with and think about robots. The results of this study can help make robots that meet the needs of people from all kinds of backgrounds.
