Hi, my name is Robert. Last summer I had a great vacation. I went on a trip with my parents by1 for two weeks. During（在…期间）the first week, we drove for four to six hours a day,2 we never felt tired. At night we stayed in big hotels. Many hotels had swimming pools. I was very happy to3 there. There were many people in the hotels and the rooms there were4 , so we often had to sleep in one room to save some money. 

During the5 week, we went camping in the mountains. We6 our tent and lived in it. I loved it so much! The tent was not big, but it was clean and quiet. I always got up7 because I wanted to see the sunshine. There was a beautiful lake near our tent. We went8 there. It was difficult for9 to get them and usually in the end I could only get one fish. At night, we saw a big moon in the sky. We10 each other stories, then we went to sleep. I had a great time during the vacation. 

 As a young man, Alan was a skilled artist and known for his paintings. He had a wife and two sons. But one night, his older son died of a sudden illness. To make matters worse, his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his 6- year- old son. The pain was more than Alan could stand, and he turned to alcohol (酒). Finally, Alan became an alcoholic(酒鬼).

 Day by day, Alan began to lose everything he had— his home, his job, his art, everything. In the end, Alan died alone in a hotel.

 When I heard of Alan's death,I thought," What a complete failure!"

 As time went by, Alan's son Ernie grew up. He is one of the kindest and most caring men I have ever known. I watched Ernie with his children and saw the free flow of love between them. I knew that kindness and care had to come from somewhere.

I hadn't heard Ernie talk much about his father. It is so hard to excuse an alcoholic. One   day I asked him,"I'm really puzzled by something,"I said."I know your father was basically the only one to raise you. What on earth did he do to make you become such a good person?"

 Ernie sat quietly for a while. Then he said," From my earliest memories as a child until I left home at 18, Alan came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said,‘I love you, son.'"

 Tears came to my eyes as I realized what a fool I had been to judge Alan as a failure. He had not left any material possessions(物质财富) behind. But he had been a kind and loving father, and he left behind one of the finest men I have ever known.

A duck is very sad because he is the ugliest among his brothers and sisters. But to his surprise, when he grows up, he finds that he has become a handsome young swan(天鹅)! This is the story of The Ugly Duckling(丑小鸭) by Danish(丹麦) writer Hans Christian Andersen.

In fact, Andersen was an "ugly duckling" himself. In 1805, he was born into a poor family in Odense, Denmark. As a young boy, Andersen was tall, ugly and had a very big nose. His friends always made jokes about his big nose. During his school life, young Andersen spent most days dreaming about the stories he imagined(想象) in class.

Later, because of his father's death, Andersen had to make a living(谋生) by himself. He once worked as a tailor(裁缝) and made money in a theater. The difficulties helped him write his fairy tales(童话). Andersen began his writing by writing plays and poems for some small magazines. He talks about love and sacrifice(牺牲) in The Little Mermaid(美人鱼), and makes fun of authority(权威) in The Emperor's New Clothes.

Andersen wrote for 43 years until the end of his life in 1875. He finished 168 works and we can read them in about 150 languages. They never stop bringing happiness to kids around the world.
