A Smart Schoolbag | Forget to put the books you need into your schoolbag in the morning before you go to school? A boy aged 11 has invented a schoolbag. It tells you which books to bring. A small computer and a scanner(扫描装置) are fixed in the bag. As each book is put into the bag, it is checked by the scanner. If any book is missing, a message will be shown on the computer screen to remind you. |
Weather Sweets | Can you eat weather? A university makes that happen. It uses a 3D printer to create sweets according to the weather information of a certain day. The shapes of the sweets are influenced by wind speed. The colours of the sweets are decided by temperature. The sweets act as a weather record of the day when they are made. |
A Sunrise Bed | It's hard for you to get up in the morning, isn't it? To help you get up, a company has created a "tool" — a sunrise bed. It wakes you up as the sun rises. Lights built into the bed turn on and start to get brighter and brighter. When the lights are fully on, soft music will begin to play. It will be louder and louder until you turn it off. |

How much do you know about terraces (梯田) in China? Imagine mountains are in silver (银色) water, shining in the spring sun.{#blank#}1{#/blank#} During autumn, these same mountains are gold, and in winter they are covered with white frost (霜冻 ). These are the amazing colours of the Longji Rice Terraces.
It was hard to build these terraces for the local Zhuang and Yao people in Guangxi.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} Reaching as far as the eye can see, these terraces cover tall mountains, often from the bottom to the very top.
{#blank#}3{#/blank#} First, building the terraces meant that they could have more fields to grow rice. Second, the flat (平坦的) terraces catch the rainwater and stop the soil from being washed away.
People have worked in harmony (和谐) with nature to make these terraces. The terraces have hundreds of waterways (河渠). During the rainy season, rainwater along these waterways moves down the mountains and into the terraces.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} This forms clouds and then rain falls down onto the mountain terraces once again.
Though modern technology could help produce more crops (庄稼), these terraces still mean a lot to the local people. For them, traditions have too much value (价值).
A. Why do people turn the mountains into terraces? B. It is quite useless for the people to work there. C. The sun heats the water and turns it into vapour (水蒸气). D. Summer sees the mountains turn green with growing rice. E. It took them hundreds of years. |
One way to improve your English is to learn English idioms(习语) and then use them.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}. They make you sound more like a native speaker. Like other languages, English has thousands of idioms which you can use in many different situations, or to talk about your feelings and opinions. So how do you learn them?
Learn idioms in the context(上下文)
Don't learn idioms by making lists. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. Make sure you have an example of how the idiom is used, and know clearly whether it's common. This is important, because if you use the idiom in the wrong situation, it won't sound natural.
Don't try to learn too many at one time
{#blank#}3{#/blank#}. For that reason, don't try to learn more than five at any one time. Don't forget: You'll need to practise your new idioms(like any new vocabulary), so limit(限制)what you do in any lesson.
Understand the feeling
We often use an idiom to express a feeling or emotion. So for example, we say that someone has a heart of gold. Because gold is a valuable metal, we can imagine that someone with a heart of gold is a good person. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}.
Listen out for idioms
If you hear two words used together in an unusual way, it might be a new idiom. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. However, usually you might need to make a note of it or ask the person who has spoken it.
A. Idioms can be difficult B. Instead, learn their meanings in the context C. In fact, it does mean that a person is very kind D. Idioms can add interest to what you say or write E. Sometimes you can guess its meaning in the context |
We can use the computer to do a lot of things on the Internet. When do my classmates go online? And what do they often do on the Internet? Now, let's have a look!
On weekdays, I can't use the computer. So I often play games on the computer at the weekend. I like cooking games best because I can learn how to cook.
I often do my homework on the computer at the weekend. I can talk with my teacher and my classmates about my homework in my free time. I think my computer is helpful.
It is a habit for me to check (查看) my emails after I get up on Saturday. I like using emails because I can send pictures to my friends.
I check my emails 5 times a week. I'm always online on weekends. I have lots of friends all over the world. So I send many emails to them and I get lots of emails, too. Every email gives me some information. |
