A neighbor of mine, while visiting his mother in Boston, took her to a shoe store to buy a new pair of shoes. While she was trying on different styles, my neighbor took the manager（经理）beside him. "When she picks out a pair that she likes,' he said, "just tell her that the price is 12 dollars. I'll pay the regular price. I don't care how much it is.'

The following week, my neighbor was walking by the shoe store and the manager recognized (认出)him and called him in.

"What's the problem?' asked my neighbor as he entered the store.

"Wasn't my check any good?'

"That's not it,' answered the manager, "The problem is that your mother is bringing all her friends in for those 12-dollar shoes!'

Two simple words "thank you" have made a big difference to thousands of firemen in New York City.

Savannah is {#blank#}1{#/blank#}girl from Texas. "I was trying to think {#blank#}2{#/blank#}I could help them out," she says. After {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(hear) about sacrifices (牺牲) made by firemen, she was moved by the risks they face. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}Savannah made 200thank-you cards for them. "I want to show how much I care about them."

"I told the firemen thank you," Savannah recalls. "They're always there to help us."

Savannah {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (decide) to keep making cards. For the next seven {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (month), she woke up early to paint and colour and cut. In that time, she sent 1,600 cards {#blank#}7{#/blank#}bite-sized candies while meeting these heroes. Soon, fire stations started thanking the girl.

Once too shy to talk to others at school, it is now easy for {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (she) to communicate with firemen and school students. And she can even give a speech in public. She is quite {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(difference) from what she used to be. "She's saying how thankful she is for them!" Savannah's mum, Debbie, says, "Savannah sees that stepping out and doing something can {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(true) make a difference."

The Elmore Bank had just put in a new safe and vault (金库). Mr. Adams was very {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (pride) of it. He gladly explained its workings to everyone. Ralph Spencer listened {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (polite), but did not seem very interested. The two children, May and Agatha, were very{#blank#}3{#/blank#} (excite) to see these shining things. 

At this time, Ben Price, a policeman from Little Rock, walked inside the bank hall. He told the clerk that he was just waiting for a man he {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (know). 

Suddenly there was a scream (尖叫). May locked Agatha in the vault. The old banker cried, "Oh, the door can't {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (open). And the clock I hadn't started yet." During the following silence they could just hear the girl wildly{#blank#}6{#/blank#} (shout) in the dark vault. "Only one man in Little Rock can open this door," said Mr. Adams. "Ralph, the child can't stand it long in there. There isn't enough air, and besides, she {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (die) of fear. What shall we do?"

Ralph threw off his coat and pulled up his shirt sleeves. With that act Ralph Spencer disappeared and Jimmy Valentine took {#blank#}8{#/blank#} ( he) place. "Get away from the door, all of you," he said. Then he set his suitcase on the floor and laid out all the tools. In ten minutes, breaking his own burglarious (入室盗窃的) record, he opened the door. 

Jimmy put on his coat and walked towards the front door. A big man stood in his way. "Hello, Ben!" said Jimmy, with a strange smile. "Well, let's {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (go)." And then Ben Price acted rather strangely. "Guess you're mistaken, sir," he said. "I don't think we've met each other before. Your carriage {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (wait) for you, isn't it?"

One Sunday afternoon，my younger brother and I were left alone at home. I was doing my homework while my younger brother was watching TV. Suddenly，the doorbell rang. My brother thought it was our parents，so he opened the1 quickly. 

A tall man stood outside and asked politely if our parents were at home. 

Without thinking，my brother said，"No. " When I wanted to close the door，he suddenly2 the door very hard and came into our house. He took out a3 and ordered me to tie up my brother's4 with a rope（绳索）. I tied up his hands in a special way so my brother could untie（松开）himself5 ．The man then tied my hands up and locked6 of us in the kitchen. 

Soon，he went upstairs. I taught my brother to untie his rope with his hands. He then untied 7 ．I rushed to the telephone to call the police, but the line was cut off. The doors were all locked from outside. It was lucky that the man forgot8 the kitchen door. We got out of the house through the window and went to the nearest pay phone to call the police. 

Soon the police came and the man was caught. By the time，my parents had come home. We told them the whole story. My parents were glad that we were not hurt. They told me that I should stop my brother from9 the door to the stranger. I learned a lesson on10 .

I still remember that I went to the beach with my family last summer holiday. We put all our toys and   tools we might use into the car. Then we left for the beach. It was boring to do nothing in the car, so we started to sing songs all the way.

 After a couple of hours, we stopped to have lunch. I ate pizza, potatoes and chicken. They were delicious! Finally, we arrived in Pensacola. My uncle Luis was waiting for us. We all stayed in the same seaside hotel. It was great to have a view of the sea through the hotel windows. Of course we were very tired from our traveling so we rested all day.

 The next day, I was ready to play on the beach. However, I forgot something very important. So I was sunburned at the end of that day. I couldn't move. I lay on the bed and watched television. I felt unhappy even if it was my favorite cartoon. I could hear my brother swimming in the sea outside. I really wanted to join him. Next time I go there, I will be careful and I'm sure I' ll enjoy my holiday on the beach then.
