I walked into the Huddle House Restaurant in Brunswick, Georgia and sat down at the table. I picked up the menu and was to order something for breakfast.

"Excuse me,"

I looked up and1 a nice-looking woman standing before me.

"Is your name Roger?"2 asked.

"Yes, " I answered, feeling rather surprised as I had never seen her before.

"My name's Barbara and my3 is Tony," She said, pointing to a middle-aged man sitting alone at the table by the window. He was4 and weak.

"Tony White, from Landon School in Jacksonville, Florida," she added.

I looked at that man for a few seconds5 I didn't know him.

"I'm really sorry. The name doesn't  ring the bell," I said.

She walked back, began6 with her husband and once in a while I saw her turn around and look at me.

I ordered breakfast and a cup of7 , sitting there, trying to remember who this Tony was. "I8 know him," I thought to myself. "He knows me for some reason. " I picked up the coffee cup. All of a sudden(突然), it came to me like a flash of lightning. (一道闪电)

"Tony, the bully, the bad boy!" I could9 believe (相信) my eyes. "My God! He's so thin now. Not the big boy that I10 from back in 1997. "

Everything came up to my mind. The time this11 boy had made fun of my big ears in front of the girls in my class, and the time this big bully had pushed(推) me against the walls in the hallway just to make himself12 a big man to all other students.

"I am sorry, Roger," Tony rolled by me in the wheelchair(轮椅), being pushed by his wife, raising his thin, shaking hand. "I am so sorry for13 that I did to you. "

"I'm…I'm  er…" I didn't know14 to say to him.

After a few months, I got a letter from Barbara. Tony was15 . Tony had been a fireman and had been seriously wounded (受伤) in a task.

How I regretted (后悔) for not saying something to him but I no longer had the chance!

Homeschooling

What do most people remember about their school days? Playing with classmates during breaks, eating food in the dining hall, or going to the headmaster's office, perhaps. But 850, 000 teenagers in the United States don't experience these things, because they are homeschooled. They don't go to a regular school.

MONDAY. July 10

I'm Dylan and I'm 14 years old. This is my third year of being homeschooled by my mom, a university professor(教授). A lot of people ask me how I feel about it. They ask, "Do you miss being in school with other kids?"

Well, my daily life is different from the daily lives of millions of children who go to regular schools, but I'm enjoying my time with my mom. I'm learning things at my own pace. We can go fast or slow. depending on the subject. These days, I'm reading books that most kids only read when they get to college. I'm studying French German, art, and the his tones of the world-things I'm very interested in.

A lot of kids think I never get to communicate with other kids, but that's not true. I get together with the other homeschooled kids during our weekly sports games and at social events. I don't just study at home. My mom takes me to all kinds of field trips-to museums, theaters, libraries and lots of other cool places. And college? I'm not worried about it. I know I'm preparing myself well for it.

①As a kind of traditional Chinese art, paper cutting has a long history. The first and earliest paper cutting was found in China about 1,500 years ago. But the traditional art is at risk of disappearing （消失） now. Luckily, Voyo Woo, a Chinese immigrant （移民）, is trying to bring the art back to life.

②Ms Woo began to study paper cutting as a 14-year-old girl in her hometown in China. She said all the students at school had to learn paper cutting. But she had a deep love for it. So her teacher spent more time teaching her after class. Later, she won second prize in a national painting and calligraphy （书法） competition. Ms Woo went to America after she finished college in 2008. Soon after that, she took part in an activity to promote Chinese paper cutting. And then she was invited to show the art in many important activities. "It is important to promote the art to Americans or anyone who is interested in it. Maybe it will make the art more popular." Woo said.

③From paper cutting, people can know about Chinese cultural values, history and stories of people's life. Ms Woo uses the art as a tool to show Chinese culture to the people who know little about it. Chinese art is not only for Chinese, but also for people all over the world.

Charlotte Liebling considers herself a "world watcher"-someone who carefully sees the world around her. When Liebling was in college, she volunteered at a 1 that sold secondhand goods. She saw people bringing in objects to donate, including soft toys. 

Liebling knew that the toys held great sentimental(情感的) value for their owners. So she felt 2 when the toys were sold very cheaply, or worse, thrown away.

One night when Liebling got home from work, she started doing some research. She 3 this wasn't happening only in her town. Millions of toys 4 in landfills(垃圾场)every year in the world. "If we can change the idea that soft toys lose their 5 after they've been used, then we can show people that these toys still hold important worth and can be passed on to others. That's how the Loved Before Company 6 ," Liebling says.

When someone wants to donate a soft toy, he can take it to the company. He is encouraged to write down the name of the toy and a story about it This can include the creature's likes and dislikes, and an adventure it's been on. Liebling believes that sharing what makes the toy7 helps new owners understand its value. Then the toy is cleaned, photographed, and packed 8 with its name and story. Every Monday, Liebling 9 the toys on the Loved Before website.

Since the company started in 2019, Loved Before has sold more than 50, 000 soft toys. But the company's 10 is more than "just trying to save some toys from landfills," Liebling says. "We hope to teach kids about the value of loving secondhand things again." 

There are many deserts on the earth. And here are some facts you may find interesting. 

What are deserts like?

Deserts can be hot and dry places. Rain may not fall there for months or years. Some deserts are sandy and stony (多石的). Deserts can also be very windy places. The wind can change the shape of the deserts. It moves sand around from place to place. 

Temperatures in the deserts can vary very much. During the daytime, the temperature may reach 40℃ even in the shade (阴凉处). At night, deserts can become very cold. In winter there may even be a frost(霜冻) in the early morning. 

Living in the deserts

The camel is sometimes called"the ship of the desert". It stores food in its hump (驼峰) and can go for days without water. It has large feet which help it not to fall into the soft sand. Its long eyelashes keep out the sand during sandstorms. 

An oasis is an area of the desert where water may be found. The water may be in pools or under the ground. People and animals visit an oasis to find something to eat and drink. Plants grow at an oasis. Some farmers are able to grow crops there. 

The Arabian Desert

The Arabian Desert lies between the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. In some parts of the desert, it is too hot for people to live. Oil was discovered under parts of the desert. This oil has made some countries in the area very rich. Much of the money has been spent building fine cities with lovely parks and lakes, and people live a comfortable life there.
