This wasn't the way I wanted to see Rome. Sure, it felt  1 to spend Christmas there and stand in awe of the city's attractions. But life wasn't meant to turn out like this. 

I was supposed to go to Rome with my mom back in 

2012. However, life had different  2 . A week before our trip, I got a stomach infection, a condition that required a week of  3 . What's worse, my mom  4 a cough, which later proved a stage-four cancer. 

My mom spent the final months of her life5 the terrible disease though it was a losing 6 . After she passed away, I 7 a trip to Rome. And 8 , you never get used to a world that mom isn't a part of. You just deal with it because you don't really have a  9 . 

I spent two weeks doing all the things we had wanted to do. Maybe she wasn't physically there, but I  10 her presence every minute. Her presence also11 me that life isn't about the things we buy or the money that we have. It's about making 12 with the people we love. They never really 13 us since they are constantly influencing our lives in  14 ways. 

After my trip to Rome, 15 knew that my mom would always be there because she had forever changed my life in the best possible way. 

Adults usually do not remember most of the things that are taught by their teachers at school. But this story is one such lesson that I will never forget. Every time I drift off course, I think of this story.

It was a normal Monday morning, and my teacher was teaching us on important things in life and about devoting ourselves to what is important to us. This is how the story went

An old man lived in a certain part of London, and he would wake up every morning and go to the subway. He would get onto the train right to Central London, and then sit at the street corner and beg. He would do this every single day of his life. He sat at the same street corner and begged for almost 20 years.

His house was dirty, and a stench(恶臭) came out of the house and it smelled terrible. The neighbors could not stand the smell any more, so they called for the police officers to clear the place. The officers knocked down the door and cleaned the house. There were small bags of money all over the house that he had collected over the years.

The police counted the money, and they soon realized that the old man was a millionaire (百万富翁). They waited outside his house expecting to share the good news with him. When the old man arrived home that evening, one of the officers told him that there was no need for him to beg any more as he was a rich man now, a millionaire.

But the old man said nothing at all; he went into his house and locked the door. The next morning he woke up as usual, went to the subway, sat at the street corner and continued to beg.

Clearly, this old man had no great plans, dreams or anything significant for his life. We learn nothing from this story other than staying focused on the things we enjoy doing.

When it comes to emergencies, children are sometimes unsure what to do. 1 9-year-old Aria Lamen was fully 2 when she faced such an emergency. Her mother collapsed in the house and her quick 3 saved her mother's life. She immediately called her father and then called 

911. 

However, she has been 4 most for her calmness. On February 2nd, 2023, when Aria was finishing her homework in the dining room, her mother, Caron Lamen, collapsed. "Out of nowhere, I just 5 . . . I was on the floor and couldn't move or feel my entire left side," said the mother. 

"In the ambulance, they 6 to know my allergies（过敏症）, medications and all that," said Caron. "Aria said, ‘Well, here I have my mother's phone. I know all that 7 is on her phone; let me 8 it. '" At that moment, all that 9 to Aria was that her mother needed 10 . 

Even the police were 11 to hear Aria was so calm on the call. "I've taken calls for 30 years," said Tracie Whalen, the 911 dispatcher（调度员）. "I don't see most adults do as well as Aria did. "

After getting to 12 about what Aria did, Mayor（市长）Richard Irvin rewarded her for her 13 , "Your courage and calmness made all the 14 . Congratulations, young lady. " Hearing that, the 9-year-old is 15 that she knows what to do in emergencies. 

Lanrick Jr. Bennett holds a unique title in Toronto: bicycle mayor. He led a Halloween Kidical Mass ride recently, which I attended with my daughter, son-in-law, their two dogs, and my granddaughter. He is working towards making cycling mainstream and safe for all residents in the city. I did not know that Toronto had a bicycle mayor; I surely would have voted for him in an election.

The bicycle mayor program is run by BYCS, an Amsterdam-based global NGO that believes "bicycles transform cities and cities transform the world". Standing in the strange but wonderful Bentway, a park built under an elevated expressway, Bennett says, "BYCS has 150 bicycle mayors across the world. And through a few friends putting in some really nice letters of encouragement, BYCS offered me a two-year term as an advocate here in the city of Toronto, becoming the first bicycle mayor of the city."

Bennett says he is boosting the work being done to make cycling more mainstream in Toronto. "I am giving a bit more exposure to the great work that has allowed me to be able to ride a bike throughout the city. It's getting better, we're seeing more infrastructure（基础设施）, and we're seeing more people not wanting to depend on cars as their primary piece. I'm happy that I have been part of a fantastic group thus far," says Bennett.

Since there's still a lot of work to do, Lanrick Jr. Bennett has been working hard to improve cycling conditions in Toronto, and his efforts have been recognized by the community. He has been advocating for more bike lanes（车道）, better lighting, and other safety measures to make cycling a practical option for commuters（通勤者）. It's great to see people like Lanrick

Jr. Bennett working towards making cycling safe and accessible for all residents.

A little girl created the perfect Mother's Day gift.It was a drawing of a 1 on white paper with the words "For mom: love, love, love" decorated in hearts.She folded(折叠) her letter,2 then she lost it.

For most people, that would be the 3 of this story,but this story has a different result:James Carrell 4 the letter.He had just 5 his mother, wishing her a happy Mother's Day.After he got off the phone,Carrell saw the 6 on the ground outside of a hardware(五金器具) store in Manvel in Texas, United States."I 7 it was a note" said Carrell."I 8 it and saw the flower and hearts.It 9 .

moved me." Carrell thought the letter would 10 someone's day and maybe he could find the 11 , so he posted it in the Talk of Alvin Facebook group.The message 12 a lot of people, especially one man.

"I was sitting at my friend's house and saw a man 13 ,"said Carrell.

His Facebook comments(评论) included a message from Roberto Alvarado.He wrote, "I can't 14 you found my baby's letter."Carrell reached out to Alvarado to 15 the letter.It took a few days, but the men finally 16 on Thursday night, one day after Alvarado's daughter Natalie celebrated her seventh birthday." 

17 the letter made it home," said Alvarado." We are 18 for what James Carrell did." 

We often forget the power of 19 things,but for this family from Alvin, Carrell's small act left a(n)20 impression(影响).

It began on a cold rainy day in an alley (小巷) outside Lagos. But 11-year-old Anthony Mmesoma Madu from Nigeria seemed 1 , dancing barefoot across puddles (坑), jumping, and turning around. His2 took a quick video, 3 it on social media, and went back to teaching.

Then the 4 of "likes" and "shares" filled these few simple seconds with the potential (潜力) of 5 a new life. Actress Viola Davis saw the video and 6 , "It reminds me of the 7 of my people. We create, soar, imagine, have great passion, and love...despite the difficulties that have been put in front of us. Our people can 8 !!!"

In the past few weeks, some 15 million people from around the globe watched, fascinated, as Anthony danced across the puddles. Thanks to this support, he received a 9 to study virtually with some of the world's best ballet dancers a at New York's American Dance Theatre.

Famous male ballet dancer Calvin Royal Ⅲ was also 10 by Anthony's dancing. He offered help and 11 Anthony and his classmates. He told the young dancers, "You are not only 12 your world there in Africa but you re changing the minds of many people.

Many people in Anthony's community have never seen a 13 dancing ballet before. He told BBC, "When my friends see me dancing, they are 14 ," ‘What is this boy doing? Is he doing a foreign dance?' Where I Where I live there are no male ballet dancers like me.

But now, his love of dancing is 15 for Anthony, his incredible teacher, his classmates, future Nigerian dancers as well as boys who love ballet.
