Dorothy lived with her uncle Henry and aunt Em who were both farmers.Their house had only four walls，a floor and a small space under the floor to protect them from powerful winds.The house was in the middle of poor land with strong sunlight and few plants.Aunt Em used to be young and cheerful，but the sun and wind had taken away her happiness.Uncle Henry also looked serious and strict.Only Toto，could bring laughter into Dorothy's life.

One day，they heard low sounds of wind from both the north and the south.Uncle Henry realized a strong wind was coming.He rushed to protect the animals while Aunt Em hurried Dorothy to the basement.Suddenly，the house began to rock and rise to the air.In the center，but Dorothy found herself riding safely on the rising house.

Frightened，Toto ran around the room until Dorothy caught him and protected him from falling through the open door.She closed it carefully to avoid further danger.As hours passed，Dorothy slowly got over her fear.She finally fell asleep on her bed with Toto by her side.The wind had set Dorothy's house down gently in a beautiful country.

As she looked around, she saw green grass, fruitful trees, and colourful flowers.Birds with special feathers sang and flew around.As she stood enjoying the beautiful views, a group of strangely dressed people came near. They wore round hats that rose to a small point a foot above their heads. Three men were dressed in blue, and a little woman wore a white dress. They stopped and discussed in a low voice, as if afraid to come farther.

Watermelons, once the fruit of only royal (皇家的)families, are now on the table of common people. And they are many people's favorite fruit. 

Liu Wanlin lives in Xining, Qinghai. She describes watermelons as the "fruit of the people". "They are not like expensive durians(榴莲). They are cheap and common people can buy enough of them, "she said. 

Liu grew up in the countryside of the dry Qinghai-Xizang Plateau (青藏高原). The weather there is not good for the planting of watermelons. "I never tasted watermelons as a child, "she said. "But freedom of watermelons'is now not a dream anymore in my place. "People in her place can have as many watermelons as they wish. They get the fruit mainly from Gansu, Shaanxi, and Xinjiang. 

Song Shaozhe works in a restaurant in Wuhan, Hubei. He says that watermelons are really common at many restaurants as the after-meal fruit, because they are cheap. 

However, the "freedom of watermelons"didn't come easy. These years, scientists try hard to improve watermelon breeding ( 育 种 ) . Watermelons become abundant. The large number of watermelons makes them cheaper. Also, thanks to the development of farming techniques(技术), it is

possible for people to enjoy the fruit all year around. 

When I was ten years old, I became penfriends with David Lu, a boy living in Beijing. Over the {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (year), I became more and more interested {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Chinese culture. When there was a chance to study in Beijing as {#blank#}3{#/blank#} exchange student, I immediately took it. 

In my first 24 hours in Beijing, I felt both excited and nervous. I didn't see one foreigner. But on my first day of school, I {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (welcome) by many foreign faces. The students came from all around the world. 

None of us had studied Chinese before, but our language skills improved {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (quick). By the end of the first month, we were very happy that we could all make simple sentences {#blank#}6{#/blank#} some of these sentences were quite funny. We often sent our language {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (teach) Sophie into wild laughter. 

In October, David finally had time to show me around the city. Both of us were very excited to see each other. David took me to some of his favorite restaurants. Chinese table manners were very {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (difference) from those in the West. Eating Chinese food was like an adventure, and it became my favorite thing about living in Beijing. 

{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (I) six-month stay in China was really enjoyable. It has made me look forward to {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (visit) China again to look for more adventures. 

①On Sept 7, 2023. famous Chinese archaeologist (考古学家) Fan Jinshi, 85, was awarded by UNESCO(联合国教科文组织) for her protection of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang.

②Called the "daughter of Dunhuang", her story with the caves started in 1963. At that time, Fan finished her studies in Peking University and had the chance to work at the Mogao Caves.

③"Seeing Dunhuang for the first time was very exciting. But only when truly staying here did I realize that inside the caves is a world of divine (神圣的) beauty while outside is a land of blowing sand and yellow earth," Fan told Gansu Daily.

④Back in those days, it wasn't easy to work in Dunhuang. Fan and her coworkers had to live in mud houses and drink salty water. They stayed inside the caves to do research, copy murals (壁画), and do whatever they could to protect them.

⑤As time passed, Fan found a serious problem. The increasing number of tourists visiting

Dunhuang might harm (伤害) the caves. A solution needed to be found.

⑥In the late 1980s, Fan discovered computer technology by chance. She realized that this might preserve the Mogao Caves forever. After over 30 years, the Dunhuang Academy built a digital database (电子数据库) to protect cultural relics there, allowing Dunhuang's art to live forever and people to visit the Mogao Caves online.

⑦"In my whole life, I've only done one thing: protect the world cultural treasure of the Mogao Caves,"she told People's Daily. "My heart belongs to Dunhuang."

In my family, my mom Kate has brown eyes and blonde hair. She likes books and music. My dad Peter has blue eyes and brown hair. His hobbies are sports and computers. My brother, Max, has blue eyes and blond hair. He likes music and sports. What about me? I have my mom's brown eyes and my dad's brown hair. But my hobby is photography(摄影).

My parents don't have a camera. They don't like taking photos, and photography is not one of their hobbies. But do you know who likes photography in my family? My grandpa, Paul. He loves taking photos and his photos are great! My grandpa doesn't have brown eyes or brown hair, but we like the same thing(事物). About 25% of the people in the UK like the same things as their parents, grandparents, or grandparents' parents!

Every time we go into a museum, we are often told, " Don't touch that!" The Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia is just the opposite. The museum encourages visitors {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(touch) everything. 

My first visit to the museum {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(be) one year ago. We were very {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(excite) when Mum told us its name. She told us that we could climb, jump, and touch all the {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(thing) in the museum. 

This place is more like {#blank#}5{#/blank#} playground rather than a museum. It gives kids the chance to learn through {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (play). I had to be pulled out {#blank#}7{#/blank#} the museum when it was time to leave. How much I loved this place!

I {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(especial) enjoyed the very large water table and grocery (食品杂货店). I had {#blank#}9{#/blank#} much fun that I didn't even realise I was learning. 

The only problem is that this place gets crowded very quickly at weekends. {#blank#}10{#/blank#} you don't want to be immersed in(浸没于) the sea of people, get there early.
