In April 2024, an earthquake happened in Taiwan Province. Earthquakes often happen, but many people have no {#blank#}1{#/blank#} about what to do before, during and after an earthquake. To keep you safe, here is some advice.

An earthquake usually happens in a short time and can be very serious, so it is n{#blank#}2{#/blank#} to prepare yourself and your family for it. Make sure all family members know {#blank#}3{#/blank#} to turn off gas (天然气), water and electricity. They should also know some important telephone {#blank#}4{#/blank#} like 120 and 119.

During an earthquake, keeping calm is important. If you are indoors, move to a safe place in the room quickly, for example, {#blank#}5{#/blank#} a strong desk or table. By doing this, you can save yourself when something {#blank#}6{#/blank#} down from higher places. Remember to stay away from windows or heavy pictures. If you are cooking, turn off the gas at once. If you are outdoors, move to a clear area like a playground. Get away from buildings, bridges and trees. If you are driving, {#blank#}7{#/blank#} the car as soon as possible and then just stay inside. Don't try to drive through an active earthquake.

After an earthquake, don't run out of the building at once. You'd better stay in your safe place {#blank#}8{#/blank#} the shaking stops for 1 or 2 minutes. Make sure if there is anybody else around you, then help the people who are in need.

Chopsticks are a pair of thin sticks for eating. They are the main eating tools for some Asian1 , like China, Korea and Japan. Today, most chopsticks are made of wood, 2 , plastic（塑料）or metal.

Chinese chopsticks are usually 3 than other chopsticks, about 24-26cm,but Japanese chopsticks are about 21-23 cm. They usually have a thin eating end.

Chinese people started to use chopsticks over 4,000 years4 . People of the Shang Dynastyused chopsticks to5 small pieces of food from hot water and hot pots of oil. So in the beginning, chopsticks were much thinner than before those we use today.

In old China, chopsticks were once called zhu. The name has been6 used, but later it became kuai, meaning "quick". Hundreds of years later, the name changed to kuai zi. That is what we call them today.

In Chinese culture, there are some7 of using chopsticks. For example, it is8 to put chopsticks in the mouth for a long time. Don't use chopsticks and bowl or plates to make any noise. And never stick chopsticks straight down into a bowl of rice!

There are some very good inventions which, for one reason or another, don't become popular. These inventions should be better known, even though I think that some of them are crazy. Let's have a look at some of these inventions and see if you agree that they should be more successful. 

The Australians had a great idea to stop people from drinking and driving. The idea was that if a driver wanted to start the car, she or he would have to blow into a bag first. If there was too much alcohol(酒精) in their breath, the car wouldn't start. It sounded like a great idea to me, but people said that they might need to drive the car in an emergency even if they had drunk too much alcohol. Another idea I liked was an invention by a scientist who thought his children watched too much TV. He linked the TV to an exercise bike so that the electricity to power the TV was generated(产出) by the bike. If the children wanted to watch a lot of TV, they had to pedal(踩踏板) very hard. I found another invention on the Internet which was intended (倾向于) to encourage good habits. Believe it or not, this invention was an ashtray(烟灰缸) which spoke to you when you lit a cigarette! The "voice" of the ashtray was activated (启动) by the heat from the cigarette and reminded you how dangerous it is to smoke. 

One of the strangest inventions I have come across is a bicycle which can cross rivers! The idea was that when you came to a river, you could inflate a huge plastic ball all around the bike. You would then get into the ball which would float on the river while you pedaled the bike inside the ball! Why not use a bridge instead? A friend of mine at school once bought a strange pair of football shoes. On the bottom of the shoes there was a rotating pad of studs (转动钉垫). The idea was that you would change direction more quickly if the studs rotated with you. The problem was that every time you stopped you changed direction whether you wanted to or not! I think he wore those shoes twice! One thing I would like is a baseball cap with a built-in radio so you can listen to sport all day with your hands free. While we are on the subject of sport, the Americans invented a kind of robot for sports fans. If you were watching your team on TV on your own, you could press a button and the robot would do "high fives" with you! Fantastic! I wonder if you have any good ideas for inventions like these. 

Every kid in my neighbourhood knew about the Christmas Witch (女巫). She was an old woman who left her Christmas decorations(装饰) up all year long: a twinkling tree in the living room, a plastic wreath on the front door, and…

I was told the decorations were meant to get kids closer to the house so the Christmas Witch could take them, and I promised myself I would never go near that place. But when I turned fourteen, I got a newspaper road map and found I'd have to deliver(投递) papers to the Christmas Witch. 

My first day of delivery was a dark, cold March morning. The sky was just turning pink as I got close to the last house on my road map— that of the Christmas Witch. I walked up the stairs quietly and placed the newspaper by the door. Then I quickly turned around. Just then I fell down the stairs. I hurt my ankle(踝关节), unable to walk. 

The light was on. The door opened. Someone came out. It was the Christmas Witch. 

"Dear me, " said she. "Are you all right?" Speechless, I pointed at my ankle. "Come in; make sure you're okay, " she smiled, not a wicked- witch smile, but a nice smile. I had no choice. Holding her hand, I got into her house and was placed in a chair. "Relax. " She hurried into the kitchen and returned a moment later, handing me a cup of hot tea. "I call your parents, " she said. 

I told her my mother's number. She got through, told my mother everything and turned, "Your mother will be here shortly. ""Thank you, Mrs Wright. ""You're welcome. " She sat down across from me, smiling. "You don't have to call me Mrs Wright; you can call me Christmas Witch. "

I was a bit embarrassed (尴尬的). "It's alright. I hear what people say, " she smiled. "You do have lots of decorations, "I said. "I think it's pretty, " she replied. "But people think it's… strange, "I said. "They don't understand why I leave up my decorations, " answered she. 

Like most teenagers, I just asked the next question, "Why?"

"It was because of my son, Anthony, " said Mrs Wright. "Anthony planned to come home before Christmas. He called me on New Year's Eve, telling me to leave up the Christmas decorations. But three days later, Anthony died because there was something wrong with the plane. My boy never made it back home. Even though I know it doesn't change anything, I won't take down those decorations, even after all these years. " Mrs Wright wasn't a witch. She was a sad, lonely mother fighting with a terrible sadness. 

The doorbell rang and my mother arrived. Held by my mother, I went home. My hurt ankle healed (康 复 ) quickly. Since then, whenever I delivered newspapers to Mrs Wright, she smiled, saying how much she enjoyed my visit. I didn't think of her as the Christmas Witch any more.
