Eduardo reached into his backpack，searching for his mobile phone. He was tired of Aunt Letty spending all day on her chickens，goats，horses，and cows. Worse，he was afraid of having to spend the spring vacation on Aunt Letty's farm. 

Although he disagreed，his parents decided that spending time on the farm would be a great experience for him. They grew up on a farm and believed that responsibility（责任），hard work，and respect for the land were valuable lessons. 

"So，have you ever ridden a horse？"Aunt Letty asked，trying to turn his attention away from his phone. "Hmmm，no. "he answered. "Well，we've got a nice horse I think you'll like. "she said，smiling. 

Eduardo was unhappy that he had to work. Vacations were meant for sleeping late，playing video games，and maybe skateboarding. Without lifting his head，he tried to text a friend. 

"With all the hills and valleys，phones are hard to get a WIFI. " 

Eduardo made a face，but Aunt Letty was right. 

▲. The animals on the farm woke them up，and they had breakfast before sunrise. Then they had to feed the animals. The afternoons were filled with cleanup and caring for the animals. At sunset，when the farm was finally quiet，Aunt Letty reached out her arms and inhaled（吸气），"Just take a deep breath of that sweet country air!"Eduardo，tired from his chores，couldn't enjoy his work. 

On the third day，Aunt Letty announced， "It's time to meet Hercules. "She led Eduardo into the stables（马厩）. Aunt Letty was right again. Hercules was amazing! 

Aunt Letty held her hand open for Eduardo to take. Unwillingly（不情愿地），he let her guide his hand towards Hercules and allowed the big animal to touch his hand. Softly，Hercules rubbed its nose and mouth against him. 

"It feels like velvet（天鹅绒）!"Eduardo smiled. An hour later，Eduardo was offering Hercules carrots. 

That night，as they headed towards the house，Eduardo was excited. His arms spreading wide，he inhaled and said，"Take a breath of that sweet country air!"

Cathy was a special girl. She liked playing football with the boys in her class. And she never liked to do what other girls did. Cathy was welcome among the boys in her class because she played football better than many of them. However, Cathy's girl friends began to stay away from her. Cathy felt upset and she didn't understand why.

One morning, on her way to school, Cathy saw her friend Karen and decided to talk to her.

"Karen, why don't you want me to be your friend any more?" asked Cathy.

"You play football with boys. It makes you look like a boy," said Karen.

Cathy was kind of angry. She said, "I play with the boys because I like the sport. But I also like to play with you and that should not be a problem."

Days passed. One afternoon, Cathy was playing football with two boys when Karen came to her.

"Cathy, I thought what you said these days. You're right. I should respect (尊重) your hobby. I'm sorry," Karen said.

Cathy's friend learned to respect her hobby and understood that there is no sport just for girls or boys. You can do the sport as long as (只要) you like it.

A group of students and teachers from the U. S recently attended a study tour to Hebei. The students from Muscatine High School are part of a China program that will invite 50,000 American youths to China within five years for exchanges and study. They are the second group from the school. North China's Hebei Province and the U. S. state of Iowa signed their sister-state relationship in 1983.

On Sunday, Ann Castle, along with 31 classmates and eight teachers, took part in a study tour in Hebei from April 19 to 22, 2024. The students from both schools formed one-on-one friendly partnerships.

Ann Castle visited the home of Zhang Xinyi, a senior student at Shijiazhuang Foreign Language School. Before this, Ann Castle kept herself in learning Chinese Wushu, watching traditional Chinese dances in a park, and trying popular Chinese food. In Zhang's bedroom, the two girls found many common topics of interest. Pipa, a traditional Chinese musical instrument particularly attracted Castle's attention. "This instrument has been in China for 2,000 years. It's similar to a guitar but a bit harder to learn," Zhang told her. After Castle expressed her willing to have a try, Zhang helped her put on the pipa fingernails and shared some playing techniques. Soon, the sound of pipa filled the room. They also tasted tea and desserts, looked through family photo albums, and shared stories about their families. Everything looked so beautiful. "They've been very warm-hearted and friendly. It's been an unforgettable experience," said Castle.

Teachers and students from Shijiazhuang Foreign Language School prepared a welcome concert for the Americans filled with Chinese elements. The American students also learned an ancient Chinese poem, practiced ping pong, made dumplings, planted friendship trees and visited the Great Wall. Colin Millage, a student from America, said having a tree together with his Chinese friend is more than a friendship between them. It is a friendship between the two nations.

"We hoped the students from both countries would have enough opportunity to communicate with and affect each other during the period of just over three days," said Liu Feng, the headteacher from China. According to Scott Castle, the headteacher from America, several meetings were especially held to choose the exchange students "I have great hope for the future with these kids and the kids they've been working with."

It was Julia's 10th birthday. Her mom came to her school and joined the fun. The classmates said "Happy Birthday" to Julia. Then Julia's mom handed out the birthday treats.

She was very good at making sweet cupcakes and delicious cookies. But this year, the things Julia's mom brought were not so delicious. She brought some pencils. Why? Because Julia's school has made a new rule that the sweet treats(甜点)are not allowed(允许)at school parties.

Julia's school is not the only school to ban(禁止) the sweet treats. Some other schools around the country have done the same thing. Some American experts think that fewer sweets will be good for kids' health. One third of American kids are overweight. Being overweight may lead to serious health problems.

Of course, most kids don't like this rule. They say, "What's fun about a party if there are no cupcakes?" And many parents also dislike the rule. "I want my kids to be healthy," says one of the parents. "But eating the birthday cake is an important tradition. It makes me sad that my kids will not be able to enjoy the birthday cake."

How did Julia's mom feel about this rule? She was sad when she first learned of the rule. But Julia's classmates liked the pencils very much. That____made her feel better.

Tom came to his teacher and asked him, "Sir, I have a question. How many friends should a person have-one or many?"

"It is very simple," the teacher answered. "Get me that red apple from the highest branch（树枝）of the tree." Tom looked up and said, "It's too high! I can't reach it." "Ask a friend. Maybe he can help," the teacher suggested. Tom called another student and stood on his shoulders（肩膀）to reach the branch. "I still can't reach it, sir," said Tom sadly after the first try. "Don't you have more friends?" the teacher smiled. Tom asked more friends to come over. They stood on each other's shoulders, trying to make a human pyramid（金字塔）. But the apple was so high that they couldn't go higher and the pyramid fell. Tom still couldn't reach the apple. Then one of the friends went home, brought a ladder（梯子）and Tom finally picked the apple.

After getting the apple, the teacher asked, "So, do you understand how many friends a person needs?"

"Yes, I do," Tom said. "Many, so together we can work out any problem."

"Sounds good," the teacher said. "You need as many friends as you can. Among them, there will be at least one smart person who can think of a good idea, like getting a ladder!"

People have told stories about Robin Hood for more than 700 years. Nobody knows if he was a real person or an invented character. In the legends(传说), Robin was quite smart and had a playful sense of humour. He loved playing jokes and tricks on people. The stories say that Robin Hood was a skilled archer(弓箭手)and he always carried a bow and arrow.

He wore green clothes and a hat with a green feather. He lived in Sherwood Forest with a group of outlaws(逃犯), known as his "Happy Men". The group included Friar Tuck, Little John, who was unusually tall, and Robin's true love, Maid Marian.

Sherwood Forest was a royal(皇家的)hunting forest in county of Nottinghamshire in England. Most people thought that forests were dangerous places to go. People travelling through the forests were often robbed by outlaws.

The stories say that Robin Hood only took money from rich people so that he could give it to people who needed it. So he became famous for "robbing from the rich and giving to the poor".

The Sheriff(郡长)of Nottinghamshire was Robin's arch-enemy. It was the sheriff's job to keep the woods safe and to make sure that nobody stole the king's deer. The Sheriff of Nottinghamshire tried to catch Robin Hood, but never succeeded.

Centuries ago, people loved to tell each other stories of Robin Hood. Later he became a famous character in books, and nowadays Robin is still a well-loved hero in books, theatre, TV and films.
