Catch the fish and then forget the net. This is one of my Chinese teacher's favorite Chinese idioms (成语), Deyuwangquan. It comes from Zhuangzi and the meaning of it is that you are used to getting help from others but don't show your thanks to them. 

When I studied this idiom in the United States, I read traditional Chinese characters (汉字). The character for "fish" has four dots (点) at the bottom. However, when today's Chinese students study this idiom, they read simplified (简化的) characters. The character for "fish" only has a line at the bottom. This simplified character is easier to write. However, why are the four dots replaced (代替) by a line, rather than something else? And how many of you have thought about this? 

This simplification of Chinese characters started in the 1950s. The purpose was to improve literacy. 

Simplified characters are easier for people to read and write. 

However, they fear that over-simplifying Chinese characters may make some cultural heritage (遗产) be lost. The first four dots at the bottom of the character for "fish" come from even older characters. These characters not only mean fish but also look like a fish. There are hundreds of such characters in Chinese. 

Each of them has a story behind its meaning. 

Some people have suggested that schools should teach traditional characters. But Chinese is already among the most difficult languages to read and write. To save time, perhaps we should still learn and use simplified characters. However, traditional Chinese characters are valuable and should stay, too. You may spend some time learning about them and the stories behind. In this way, you will help pass down Chinese culture and also have some fun.

Future City is a project- based learning (基于学习的) program. It starts with a question-- how can we make the world a better place? To answer it, 6th, 7th and 8th- grade students try to think up good ideas to a citywide problem to build cities of the future.

Future City started in the USA. It has a history of about 30 years. Students work as a team to design (设计) a city 100 years later in the future. Each year, Future City has a theme. Teams will think about good solutions according to(根据) it.

Future City plays an important role in improving students' interest in science, technology(科技), engineering, art, and math (STEAM for short). Because during the program, students do the things as engineers do. For example, first, they should make clear of problems, and then come up with new ideas. Next, they work together to solve them. After testing, retesting, and building, finally, they share their results in four to five ways such as making models or giving papers and so on.

A big test makes students feel fear and anxiety(焦虑). But taking tests is something faced by all students at all levels of schools. How do you prepare for the tests as well as reducing fear?{#blank#}1{#/blank#} Maybe they will be of use to you.

Calm down. Don't panic(恐慌). {#blank#}2{#/blank#}You will be focusing on the fear, and not the coming test. Many times, fear can even prevent you doing well. If you panic, take deep breaths, and think that you can do this.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#}People who make a detailed study plan often have an easier time of their studies. When making a study plan, calculate(算) the amount of time you have left before the exam date. Is the exam in a month? Is it a mid-year exam that has been waiting since the start of the year? Depending on the time, make your study plan long or short. 
Take notes and ask questions. If you come across what you can't understand, write it down.
