In a small village, a young man named Mark lived with his father, a wise old man. One day, Mark told his father {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(sad) that he made little progress in learning the guitar. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't improve. Mark asked his father {#blank#}2{#/blank#}some help. "Follow me, and I {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(lead) you to the high hills around the village tomorrow," said his father.

The next day, they set out. The road was long and difficult, {#blank#}4{#/blank#}Mark still followed his father. As they got higher, the father said that he wanted to go to the top of the highest hill where he had never been to. Mark was {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (surprise)but decided to help his father. With great difficulty, Mark helped his father climb the hill. Sometimes he even carried his father on his back. At the top, he put his father on the ground and laughed with joy.

"{#blank#}6{#/blank#}you were a little boy, sometimes you returned home with tears in your eyes," said his father. "The el der children laughed at you. Do you remember why?"

Mark nodded. He remembered that as a child, he and all his {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(friend) called this hill Mount Impossible, because small children couldn't reach its top.

"And today," said his father, "you not only climbed here, but also helped {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(I) to get here."

"I became {#blank#}9{#/blank#}bigger and stronger boy," said Mark.

"Instead of {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(climb) Mount Impossible every day, you played on the smaller hills and became better at climbing," said his father. "It became possible for you to climb Mount Impossible while you weren't even thinking about it."

After I finished college in 1932, I decided to find a job in radio as a sports announcer(广播员) . I went to Chicago and knocked at the door of every station. But unluckily, I got turned down every time.

In one station, a kind lady told me that big stations wouldn't hire (雇用) a person without any experience and suggested that I try my luck at smaller stations. Following her advice, I went back to Dixon, where I had grown up. There were no such jobs in Dixon, and my father said a newly-opened store wanted a local person to work for it. I wanted this job, but I was refused again.

"Everything happens for the best," Mum reminded me. Dad offered me the car to look for a job. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The programme director, Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an announcer.

As I left his office, I felt so frustrated. "How can I become a sports announcer if I can't get a job in a radio station?" I asked aloud.

While I was waiting for the elevator, I heard someone calling. It was MacArthur. "What was that you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?" Then he asked me to have a try. He was pleased with my performance, and he offered me a chance to work there.

On my way home, I thought of my mother's words: "If you carry on, one day something good will happen. Something wouldn't have happened without the failure before."

A 70-year old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 23-year-old son who had just finished college. Suddenly a crow stayed on their window. The father asked his son, "What is this? The son replied, "It is a crow." After a few minutes, the father asked for the second time. The son said, "Father, I have just told you it is a crow."

After a little while, the old father asked his expression of anger was felt in the son's tone when he said to his father, "It is a crow, a crow." A few seconds later, the father asked his son again. This time the son shouted at his father. "Why do you keep asking me again and again, although I have told you so many times IT IS A CROW?"

Later, the father went to his room and came back with an old diary, which he had kept since his was born. When the son read it, he saw the following words: Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him 23 times that it was a crow, I did not feel angry, but I was glad for his innocence(天真).

After reading these, the son came to know he shouldn't look on his father as a hard task when he was old, and from then on, he tried to be nice to his father.

Working as a city cleaner in the Chaoyang District of Beijing, a busy city, Zhang Jianna has earned the respect and attention of many with her good English skills and her kindness in helping foreigners. Born in the countryside of Hebei Province, 49-year-old Zhang Jianna moved to Beijing after finishing high school. She has worked in different jobs, including being a restaurant waitress and working as a salesperson in a shopping center. In 2012, she started working as a city cleaner. However, it was a chance encounter with a foreigner that encouraged her. The foreigner praised the cleanliness of the streets in English, but Zhang could only understand the word " good". This experience developed her interest in learning English. Even though it's hard to find time to study, Zhang used any free time she had to learn new words and practice speaking English. At night, she wrote down everything she learned, filling up many notebooks with what she was learning. She also used English-learning apps on her phone and computer to help her study. 

Now knowing about 3, 000 words, Zhang talks confidently with people from other countries, helping them with what they need and showing them around the city streets. Learning English has not just helped her meet people but also made her very happy. "I got more confident from learning, " said Zhang. "I feel joyful every time I help a foreigner. "

Zhang Jianna stands as an inspiring example of lifelong learning and the power of a positive spirit. Her spirit reflects a deep sense of responsibility to present the best face of the capital city to the world. Looking ahead, she hopes to use her English to encourage people to visit her hometown when she stops working and help Hebei Province develop.
