When Yang Fan was taking a walk around the Yuliang Island, she saw a black swan (天鹅) in the grass. Yang Fan knew that swans could be fierce (凶猛的). But as she got close to this one, it didn't move.

She was sure that the swan needed help. Although she had an important meeting to have, she still decided to do something for the swan. So Yang called her workmate first to pull off the meeting. Then she covered the bird's head with her jacket to keep its cool, picked it up carefully and held it in her arms. She decided to send it to the Animal Care Center, but the center was across the Han River, far from the park. She didn't know how to carry the swan there. Luckily, some strangers driving by gave her and the swan a lift to a nearby bus stop.

On the bus, no one seemed surprised by "the unusual passenger". Instead, they were worried. Someone helped Yang Fan call the center on the way. And Li Tao, an animal-care manager, picked her up at the bus stop and drove them to the center. There, the animal doctors found that the swan was poisoned (中毒), caused by eating something used to kill mice. The swan was well looked after at the center. She even made a friend—a little dog. Thanks to people's love and care, luckily, she was cured (治愈) two months later and sent back to the nature.

"It's a moving story. Yang Fan travelled about two hours and it was really a long way." Says Li Tao. "And all the strangers wanted to give her and the swan a hand." He adds, "I am happy to see that more and more people have realized the importance of protecting the wild life since we are trying to build a civilized (文明) city."

Everyone knows that exercise is important. We all need to exercise. Doctors say it is good for us. It makes our heart and body strong. Children who often exercise are more clever. This means they do better in tests and schoolwork than those who don't exercise. There are many ways to exercise. 

You can walk, run, swim, skate or play ball games. Make sure you exercise in the following ways. You have to like what you're doing. Exercise enough but not too much. It's best to exercise twice each week. Thirty minutes each time is enough. Try all kinds of things until you find one, two or even three sports that are right for you. 

You can exercise at fitness centers（健身中心）. They have a lot of equipment （设备） there. The equipment will help exercise your arms, legs and other parts of your body to make you fit. Some people buy equipment for their homes. But it is very expensive. 

Exercise can be fun. Friends can exercise together at a fitness center, or they can play sports together. How do you exercise? 

Woodcarving (木雕) is a traditional folk art form in China. Chen Jia, a young woman from Chaozhou, has concentrated (集中精力) herself on passing forward and innovating (创新) Chaozhou woodcarving.

Chen, born in the 1990s, began to learn the craft (工艺) when she was14 years old under the influence and support of her family. "I wanted to give up several times during the learning process, as I often hurt myself. It's also very difficult. My father wanted me to give up woodcarving and find an easier job. However, I fought on." Chen said.

Chen recalled that she had a strong sense of achievement when her first woodcarving artwork, which took her several months to finish, was sold. "Since I have learned it, I just keep going." said the artist.

To finish one woodcarving piece, a woodcarver usually needs more than 30 carving knives and wooden hammers of different sizes. A common theme for carvings includes different sea animals. In the past, Chaozhou woodcarvings were mainly used to decorate buildings, including serving as furniture and ceremonial objects. However, they have started to lose their charm among people living in modern life.

To attract young people to better appreciate the traditional art form, Chen has innovated on the craft in terms of its themes, shapes and usage. She now carves out small decorative objects and articles for daily use, hoping that more and more people will accept the art works as their liking.

My father was a tennis player and my sister is a high jumper at school. But I'm not interested in sports. At the beginning of this term，my PE teacher suggested that I should take part in the women's marathon（马拉松比赛）. 

I was very surprised because I was never a good runner. In order to encourage me，he said if I took part in the race，I would get the highest mark for the term's PE class. So I decided to have a try. I prepared for the race very hard. I ran every day and had the special diet（膳食）in the morning before school. 

When the day of the marathon arrived，I was very nervous. All my family wished me good luck. They knew how hard I practiced. I was worried that I would be last. However，when I started to run，I thought only about the race. I did not remember when I passed the other runners. Suddenly I realized that I had come first. I was very happy when I won the race. From this，I learned that success always comes out of hard work. 

The world's top three food plants are rice, wheat and corn. People around the world eat them {#blank#}1{#/blank#} different ways. In East Asia, people have rice {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(noodle). And bread is the main food in Europe. So I think the plants as main food play {#blank#}3{#/blank#} important role in our lives.
