Host: Hello! I'm Gavin from All Talk 970 FM. Welcome to our program. Today our topic is part-time jobs. Are they good for school children or not?

Headmaster: Certainly not. Children have got two full-time jobs already: growing-up and going to school. Part-time jobs make them so tired that they fall asleep in classes.

Mrs. Black: I agree. I know school hours are short, and there's a lot of homework to do, too. Children need enough sleep. 

Mr. Black: Young children perhaps, except some boys, stay at school until they're eighteen or nineteen. A part-time job can't harm them. In fact , it's good for them. They can earn pocket-money by themselves. And they can see something of the world outside school.

Businessman: You're quite right. Boys learn a lot from a part-time job. And we shouldn't forget that some families need the extra money. If the students don't take part-time jobs, they can't stay at school.

Host: Well, we have got two for , and two against. What do our listeners think of it?

My dad lost his job a few years ago. At the time, I thought it didn't matter much, but I was wrong. That event 1 my life.

We were sitting at dinner when my older brother Jack and I heard the 2 . Dad said that his company wasn't making enough money. They had to let a lot of people go. He said, "We are going to make some changes." Jack and I looked at each other. At first, we didn't know what they meant. Mom 3 that I would have to stop taking dance lessons for a while. Jack couldn't go to the summer camp, 4 . Mom and Dad said that we would have to save some money by cutting out things that weren't 5 .

The next few months we all helped out. Mom went back to work full-time. We had to cut out going to the movies and restaurants. Jack got a part-time 6 to make money in his free time. I took on the responsibility of doing 7 when my mother was busy doing her work. Though things were kind of hard, no one 8 and we encouraged each other.

After a few months, Dad found a job in the city. Dad thanked us for helping out. He said, "We all came together as a family."

Later on, I thought about what Dad said and 9 he was right. We were all upset about giving things up, but we did what we could to help each other. Even though it was 10 that my dad lost his job, it showed me what a family is all about.

I was in a shopping mall for two hours, so I decided to go and get a cup of coffee. As I was making my way   to the coffee shop, I noticed an old gentleman poorly dressed sitting near the shop. I knew from the first sight that he needed help. He had a little lunch in front of him and was enjoying it. It was clear that he had a problem with his right eye. I then joined the line and waited to be served.

Then it happened, one of the most beautiful gestures I had ever seen in my life. There was a young man in front of me in the line who was also waiting to be served. The next thing I knew was that the young man handed the waitress 20 dollars and requested a glass of juice as a favor(善行). The waitress looked at the young man a little perplexed, not fully understanding the request. That was when the young man asked her to give the juice to the old gentleman eating his lunch outside, as well as the change from the 20 dollars. The young man also told her that he would be watching every second so that she would be completely safe. Then there was a wonderful exchange between the waitress and the old man. I only wished I could take a photo of the smiles on both of their faces.

 As I was considering this event later, I wondered why the young man didn' t perform this act of kindness himself. Maybe he was hoping that this act of kindness might inspire(激励) others to do something for this old man as well.
