See history through sci-fi

Are science-fiction(sci-fi,科幻) stories only about the future and new technologies? The Space-time Painter(《时空画师》) is different. The novel(小说) won the Hugo Award (雨果奖), the world's top sci-fi award, {#blank#}1{#/blank#} October 21.

Hai Ya, 33, the {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (win) of the award, is a part-time writer. He works in a bank and writes stories after work. He is the {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (three) Chinese writer to win a Hugo award after Liu Cixin in 2015 and Hao Jingfang in 2016.

The Space-time Painter tells a story about a ghost of {#blank#}4{#/blank#} ancient painter. He {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(have) the ability to go into different spaces. This helps him paint {#blank#}6{#/blank#} makes his life hard.

"The Space-Time Painter is a sci-fi story about history," said Hai Ya. History is about the past and sci-fi is about the future. They may seem opposing(相反的), but fantasy(幻想) can be {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (they)bridge.

The novel got many {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (idea) from Qianli Jiangshan Tu. Wang Ximeng from the Song Dynasty(960—1279) {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (paint) it at the age of 18. But so little is known about this talented painter. In the novel, Hai Ya uses his imagination to explore the mysterious(神秘的) Wang's story.

"Also, it brings Chinese {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (tradition)culture and sci-fi together really well," said Tian Xinghai, the editor(编辑) of the novel. "The pride of a nation is also the pride of the world."

 The Confucius Institute(孔子学院) helps make African young people's dream come true. The{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(story) of Meheta and Krishna are examples. 

 Meheta, a girl from Mussoorie, is thankful to the CI. It is the starting point for all her dreams. Her parents always asked her {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(learn) Chinese at the CI. Meheta got a chance to visit China{#blank#}3{#/blank#} she studied there. And she entered the Chinese Bridge, a competition for foreign college students. She was the {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(one) African to make it to the final(决赛). After that, her life has changed. 

Krishna, from Kenya, is {#blank#}5{#/blank#} fan of Chinese kung fu films and lion dance. So far, he has studied Chinese at the CI for nearly two years. He {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (join) the Chinese kung fu club. After that he got the chance to travel to China {#blank#}7{#/blank#} a summer camp program. "I never thought one day I would be able to visit China. That was {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(happy) moment of my life, " he said. 

 Chinese is very popular in Africa. In recent years, the number of students at the CI has increased a lot. Learning Chinese gives {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (they) more chances. Many young people can go to China to experience a different life. They can {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (easy) get jobs in their countries. 

 The CI creates possibilities for students and helps to develop the friendly cultural exchanges between China and Africa.
