What do you do when you are free? Lots of people 1 the TV or go online. But in ancient times(古代), there was no TV and no Internet. 2 did people do to have fun?

 People in ancient Rome (罗马) loved going to the baths (澡堂). There were usually cold, hot and warm baths. There were big rooms, and the rooms were usually full 3 people. Romans went there to 4 and talk with their friends.

 Romans liked watching chariot racing(双轮战车比赛), too. 5 it was exciting, it was a 6 game for the drivers and horses. Sometimes they even lost their lives.

 Another very popular activity for Romans was watching gladiators (角斗士)7 . There were very good gladiators. However, 8 of them liked to fight in front of people.

 In ancient Greece(希腊), people did a lot of 9 . The first Olympic Games started about 2,800 years ago in Greece. There was only one race and only10 could joinin the race. Women couldn't even go to watch the race.

 Well, what do you think of the ways people spent their free time in ancient times? Do they sound fun?

When you cut your skin，you bleed. If a person loses a lot of blood，he will become ill and may die. Blood is very important. People have always known that. At one time some people even drank blood to make them strong!

When doctors understand how blood goes around inside the body，they try ways of giving blood to people who need it. They take blood from the healthy people and give it to people who need it. This is called"blood transfusions". The blood goes from the arm of the healthy person into the of the sick person. 

But there are two problems. First，it does not always work. Sometimes people die when they have blood transfusions. Later，doctors find that we do not all have the same kind of blood. There are four groups﹣O，A，B and AB. We all have blood of one of these groups. They also find that they can give any kind of blood to people of group AB. But they find that they must give A-group blood to A-group people and B-group blood to B-group people. I have O-group blood and the doctor told me that I could give blood to anyone else safely. 

There is another problem. To give blood of the right kind doctors have to find a person of the right blood group. Often they cannot find a person in time. If they have a way to keep the blood until someone needs it，they can always have the right kind of blood. At first they find they can keep it in bottles for fifteen to twenty days. They do this by making it very cold. Then they find how to keep it longer. In the end they find a way of keeping blood for a very long time. 

We call a place where we keep money a"bank". We call a place where we keep blood a"blood bank". One day when you grow up，you may decide to give blood to a"blood bank". In this way you may stop someone from dying. Or perhaps one day you may become ill. You may need blood. 

The"blood bank"will give it to you. 

Yang Hongwei born in 1966.is a keeper of the Weifang kite-making skill.Born into a kite-making family.Yang often saw kites with bright colours and different shapes in her grandfather's workshop.

Yang learned the skill from her grandfather at the age of 16.After practising the skill for 10 years,she started her own shop in 1992

"Many places around the world have a tradition of flying kites."Yang said."But I think the cultural background behind our kites is unique."

On Yang's kites, people can see not only common designs like butterflies and birds,but also some prints telling Chinese history.For example.she once made a kite showing a phoenix(凤凰)that was lined with portraits(肖像)of 50 famous women from Chinese history on each side.

Yang said that each woman is different in look,clothes and make-up style.To create their portraits,she made lots of effort to check historical records and talk about details with experts.

"It took me a lot of time,"Yang said,"but when I explain the stories of the kites to foreign people,I feel a great sense of achievement."

In her free time,she travels to different countries including Germany,Australia,the United States and New Zealand to tell people stories of Chinese kites and the traditional ways they are made."It is an important job of mine to spread our heritage(遗产)around the world and onto our children,"she said.

When I was just a little girl

Trying to walk there to here

My parents urged, "Anything is possible"

And I took one more step near. 

When I was a little older

Trying to ride my bike

My dad said, "Anything is possible"

And I rode till ____. 

When I was in the fourth grade

With work that was very new

My mom whispered, "Anything is possible"

And I made it through. 

Now my sisters face_these_challenges

That I once went through

I say "Anything is possible"

To them and now to you.

 Good sleep is really important to our health. But global heating is leading to increases in night-time temperatures that are happening faster than they are during the day. This makes it harder for us to get quality sleep. As global temperature increases, the average global citizen is already losing 44 hours of sleep every year, a recent study revealed. 

 The study used sleep and outdoor weather data collected from 2017 to 2022. It found that higher temperatures reduced sleep by putting off its onset. People's bodies need to cool every night as they fall asleep, but this is harder to do when it is warmer. 

"Some groups, however, will be affected much more than others. " said Kelton Minor,  a researcher from the University of Copenhagen. The sleep loss per degree of warming is about a quarter higher for women than men, twice as high for those over 65 years old, and three times higher for those in less wealthy nations. 

"Women usually have higher levels of fat than men, which may make the cooling time longer. Older people are known to sleep less at night and have poorer body temperature regulation(调节). People in poorer nations could lose more sleep, as it's harder for them to get cooling machines. " he explained. 

 The studies have also shown that rising temperatures hurt health, including increasing the possibilities of heart diseases, mental health problems, accidents and injuries. They have also been found to reduce one' s ability to work and study. Poor sleep has also been shown to have these effects. However, disturbed sleep may be a key reason why researchers are seeing these heat related health problems. 

 Worryingly, there were no signs of people being able to adapt to hotter nights. The growing numbers of people in many countries around the world are simply not getting enough sleep.
