Have you ever ridden a Ferris wheel lately? Can you imagine the flying feeling as you are pulled up to the top and then moved down to the bottom quickly again?

    Today a Ferris wheel is usually 40 to 60 feet tall. That seems very high when you are on the top looking down. But the first Ferris wheel was 264 feet high- taller than a twenty-story building! Can you imagine the view from the top of that?

    The first Ferris wheel was built for the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. The people who planned the fair were looking for an attraction that would bring people to Chicago. George Ferris handed a drawing of a giant wheel that people could ride on. At first everyone laughed at his strange idea. But Mr Ferris did not give up, and finally the idea was accepted. The ride opened in June of 1893.

    Today's Ferris wheels have 12 to 16 seats, which each carry 2 or 3 people. But that first one had 36 enclosed cars, each holding 60 passengers. When filled, it carried 2,160 people. During that summer in Chicago, about 1.5 million people rode the Ferris wheel.

After the fair, the ride was moved to a nearby amusement park built especially to show off the wheel. In 1904, it was moved again一to St. Louis for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. After the fair there, the wheel stood unused. In 1906, it was finally sold to a company for scrap metal(废金属).

    Luckily a Chicago bridge builder, W.E. Sullivan, figured out how to make a smaller Ferris wheel that could easily be taken apart and put together. In 1906, he started the company that still makes many of the Ferris wheels used today.

    But, whenever you ride one, remember that it all began with George Ferris's strange idea!

Hangzhou, together with five other cities in Zhejiang, hosted the 19th Asian Games from Sept 23 to Oct 8, 2023. The Games were very "smart" with the use of many exciting technologies. Let's have a look!

The venue (会场) can change for different kind of weather.

The venue for the tennis finals (决赛) of the Hangzhou Asian Games is sometimes called the "Small Lotus (莲花)". On the top of the stadium, there are eight "petals" (花瓣). They can open and close freely. It's built this way for different kinds of weather.

Drones can help with first aid during the Asian Games.

What if there's an accident during the game and the athletes need first aid? Drones (无人机) can be used to send things over. They can fly as far as 20 kilometers and travel 16 meters in one second. Using a drone saves about 60 percent of the time, according to the drone maker Antwork.

This AI system keeps athletes' food safe.

Every dish at the Asian Games should be safe and healthy to eat. In the kitchen of the athletes' village in Hangzhou, there is a special system that can tell people's faces. If a "stranger" goes into the kitchen, an alarm will go off to let people know.

As new technologies continue to develop, many students are choosing to study STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and math) so they can get good jobs later. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}They need ideas from artists, historians and sociologists(社会学家)— in other words, people who major in liberal arts(主修文科). 

Learning how to program is not enough. The US writer Scott Hartley mentioned it in his book. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} He points out that soft skills, including communication, collaboration(合作) and understandings of social problems, are of equal importance. 

One possible solution is to put liberal arts and STEM studies together. In fact, Lewis University in the US has started to offer a set of courses called " CS + X".{#blank#}4{#/blank#} At the University of Vermont, a program called Engineering Management connects engineering with business. Engineers need to understand markets while business people need to learn engineering.

Mum and I were just going out when it began to rain. We had to stay at home, and I {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (feel) quite bored. Mum got an idea. She suggested {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (teach) me to make dumplings. I thought it could be fun, so I said OK. Mum cut the meat and cabbages into small pieces {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (quick) . Then she showed me how to mix them with salt and oil. "Mixing is the {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (important) of all the steps," she said. I also made some other {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (prepare) with her help. When everything was ready, Dad came back home from his office. Together the three of {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (we) wrapped (包) the dumplings. {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (final) , we cooked them. They were so delicious that I ate {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (many) than twenty. That was the {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (one) time I learnt to make dumplings. It was {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (enjoy) ! I will learn more life skills in the future. 

To-wit-to-woo, to-wit-to-woo! What's that strange sound coming from the forest at night? It's an owl, of course! The owl is different from all other birds in so many ways. 

The owl's hearing and eyesight are better than most animal. All day long, the owl rests on the tree and sleep It hunts (捕猎) only at night. When evening comes, the animals all get to a safe place. The owl opens its big, round eyes to look around. Any little animals around had better be careful, The owl eats small animals like mice as food, but it wouldn't say no to another bird, if it's really hungry. 

The owl uses its great hearing to find its food, and then it turns its head from side to side. using its sharp (敏锐的) eyes to fly after the animal. Finally, it flies down to get the animal. Owls have special, soft feathers (羽毛), so they can fly without making any sound. Owls are good hunters and they can even catch a fly in the air!

The owl is usually quiet, except (除余了) when you get too close to its home. The mother owl is a great mother. She will protect her babies by opening her feathers angrily. She will even hurt people if she thinks her babies are in danger!

The owl has no teeth, so it eats an animal whole. All the parts of the animal that the owl can't digest (消化) will end up as small pieces. If you find these small pieces, you know you are near an owl's home.

My parents are very strict with me. They've made many family rules that I must follow. They want me to learn to be independent, so w{#blank#}1{#/blank#} I ask them to do something for me, they always say, "It's best to do it yourself!" But they often give me some{#blank#}2{#/blank#} (建议) that help me a lot. 

Next week, I'll set off on a trip to the mountains with my friends. My parents are w{#blank#}3{#/blank#} about me. So they make some safety rules. I'd like to share them with you. 

★Wear {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (柔软的) and comfortable clothes, strong shoes and thick socks. 

★Do not walk too close to the edge of the hill path. 

★Be careful of falling stones.

It's difficult for me to f{#blank#}9{#/blank#} asleep these days. Because I am so excited about the coming trip, especially when I think of the beautiful {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(小树林), fresh air and green grass. I am sure we will have a great time.
