The first time I really heard about the Silk Road was many years ago, in Nara, Japan. My wife and I were walking through {#blank#}1{#/blank#} park when we saw an exhibition (展览) hall full of people. We didn't have a clear idea of {#blank#}2{#/blank#}the exhibition was about, but we decided to go in. We discovered a large hall filled {#blank#}3{#/blank#} sand from China's desert, folk dancers and musicians from Central Asia, beautiful silk and wonderful things from all over the world.

We had never thought about the Silk Road before, but after {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (see) the exhibition, we became interested in it. This interest led us to China, where we visited one of the{#blank#}5{#/blank#} (big) deserts, Taklamakan Desert. We lived quite near it for two years {#blank#}6{#/blank#} we explored (探索) old Silk Road places in the far west, going as far as Karakul Lake high up in the Pamir Mountains. During {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (we) time in the far west of China, we {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (ride) camels through the desert and visited ancient markets, which sold goods (货物) not so different from those sold {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (thousand) of years ago. The memories we made there would last for the rest of our lives. We expect more people with the more interest {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (visit) the Silk Road and learn more. It was our interest in the Silk Road that drove us there and kept us wanting to learn more.

 Tina is a thirteen-year-old middle school student. Last year, she went to {#blank#}1{#/blank#} summer school in France and stayed with a local family, the Truffauts. 

 At first, things didn't go well {#blank#}2{#/blank#} she couldn't speak French. Simple things like finding the right bus stop became big problems. The Truffauts helped her a lot and treated her like part of the family. They played {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (game) and shared traditional food with her. Tina was helpful as well. She did some housework with the family every day. On the weekend, she {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(join) a community club and did volunteer work. For most of the time, she used body language to communicate. People showed {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (they) thanks with smiles and she would always smile back. Language was not a problem {#blank#}6{#/blank#} her any more. As a new member of the club, Tina was invited {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (have) parties with the other members. Day by day, she made more friends. Tina began {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (love) her new life. "A smile is a second language we were born to speak. It is also {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(good) gift I have got, "she often said proudly. 

 Smiles and a helping hand can always make people {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(close) than a language can.
