When Justin Tong was a child, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him doing lots of housework such as carrying out the rubbish and sending newspapers. But when he grew up, he was better off than his childhood friends and lived a happier and healthier life.

This is the finding of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 children in London. It showed that the children who had worked hard in childhood had a richer and a happier future. "Children who worked in the home or community gained competence(能力) and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society," said Daniel Brown, the psychologist(心理学家) who made the discovery. "And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them."

Brown's study followed these children in great detail. Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47. Under Brown, the researchers compared the children's mental-health scores with their childhood-activity scores. Points were awarded for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.

    Working at any age is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and competence — the underpinnings (基础) of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must cooperate and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this.

    Yet work isn't everything. As Tolstoy once said, "One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one's work."

Ever since "Mother Nature" gave me life, I expected to grow tall and big.

Yu Boya was a skilled guqin player from Chu, and later he became an official in Jin.

On the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival, Boya went to Jiangkou, Hanyang by boat on the way to Chu. After a storm, Boya saw the beautiful river and mountains. He started to play the guqi n on the boat.

Suddenly, he noticed a woodcutter listening with his eyes closed. Boya was suspicious(令人怀疑的) about how there was someone in the wild field who would understand music. The woodcutter replied,"Don't be suspicious. I was blocked here by the storm. When I was about to go home,l suddenly heard a guqi n sound. I was attracted."

Boya played another piece of music, and the woodcutter said,"At first, your guqin sound was so high and powerful, just like these high mountains; later, your guqi n sound was so wide, just like waves and running water..."Boya thought he found his dream friend. He knew the woodcutter's name was Zhong Ziqi and they talked happily. They became brothers. Then they made a date to meet here the next Mid-Autumn Festival.

The following year, Boya returned on the Mid-Autumn Festival. But he learned that Ziqi had passed away. He was very sad and played the music in front of Ziqi's tomb. And then he broke his guqin and vowed never to play the guqi n again, because he believed no one could ever understand the meaning of his music again.

Konchog Rapten is ten years old. He is in the fifth grade. His school stands as the highest school in the town. It is in Nyingchi, Xizang autonomous region (自治区). It is about 4, 000 meters above sea level (海平面). 

The school is now holding 397 students. Most of the students are from alpine pastoral regions (高寒牧区). Some of them live more than 50 kilometres away. As a result, most students choose to live at the school during the school year. 

The school is filled with modern facilities (设施). It has indoor and outdoor basketball courts and two soccer fields. Every classroom has a smart touch-screen computer. 

To make it easier for students to travel to/from school, the school has a special timetable. Students go to school for ten days and then enjoy a four-day break. For Konchog Rapten, this is perfect during the summer. It is when the family moves to the pasture (牧场). He helps his father with the animals and his mother with her work. "If there is no boarding (寄宿), it would be very difficult to do well in both school and daily life," the father says. He added that their summer pasture is about an hour's drive to school. 

Every day, after washing up and having breakfast in the morning, Konchog Rapten begins his day of study with his classmates. They have all their breakfasts, lunches and dinners at school. They also enjoy snacks like bread, fruit and yogurt during breaks. After evening self-study classes, students go to bed before 10 p. m. 

Xi' an, the capital city of Shaanxi Province, is thought to be the most ancient（古老的）{#blank#}1{#/blank#}（luck）, I {#blank#}2{#/blank#}（get）a chance this summer. My mum agreed to take me there. 

We went to Xi' an by plane. As we know, Xi' an is famous {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Dayan Pagoda（大雁塔） , so we went there on the{#blank#}4{#/blank#} （one） day. It was fantastic!People living there told us that it was more beautiful on sunny {#blank#}5{#/blank#}（day）. But we weren't sure about that. So {#blank#}6{#/blank#} you are in Xi' an, you can enjoy the beautiful sights by yourself. 

As one of the {#blank#}7{#/blank#} （old） cities in China, Xi' an has a history of more than 2（面食故乡） and {#blank#}8{#/blank#}（it） noodles are well﹣known all over the world. So the next day we went to the old streets and{#blank#}9{#/blank#} （buy） three different kinds of noodles for lunch. We really had {#blank#}10{#/blank#} good time there. I hope to visit Xi' an again.

 At first, he could only speak some 4 Chinese. To improve his Chinese, he 5  a language program when he came to China. The school day was 6 and hard. Each morning, the sound of the wake-up call would ring at 6:30. Class lasted until 5:15 pm each day, and then he had three 7 of night study in the evening. Each day he attended listening, speaking, reading and writing classes. 8 PE and music classes were in Chinese. For a16-year-old English boy, this was a shock. But he learned Chinese quite well.

 Alex said it took him much time to learn Chinese. But once he mastered (掌握) it, chances started presenting themselves 9 . Everyone wanted him to work for them. At that moment, he was 10 what he did. He decided to keep working hard on it.
