Many of our conversations are gossip(闲话).I have noticed three effects of gossip: it can hurt people; it can give gossipers a strange kind of satisfaction; and it can cause social pressure in a group.

An important negative(负面的）effect of gossip is that it can hurt the person being talked about. Usually, gossip spreads information about a topic that a person prefers to keep secret. The more embarrassing or shameful the secret is, the juicier the gossip it makes. Probably the worst type of gossip is the absolute lie. People often think of gossipers as harmless, but cruel lies can cause pain.

If we know that gossip can be harmful, then why do so many of us do it? The answer lies in another effect of gossip. Sharing the latest rumor (传言) can make a person feel important because he or she knows something that others don't. Similarly, hearing the latest rumor can make a person feel like part of the "in group". In other words, gossip is satisfying because it gives people a sense of belonging or even superiority (优越感). 

Gossip also can have a third effect: it strengthens unwritten, unspoken rules about how people should act. For example, if everybody you hang around with is laughing at what John wore or what Jane said, then you can be sure that wearing or saying something similar will get you the same kind of negative attention. The dos and don'ts carried through gossip will never show up in any student handbook.

Next time you feel the urge (冲动) to spread the latest news, think about why you want to gossip and what effects your "juicy story" might have.

When you run into someone, will you say "Sorry"? When you get help from others, will you say "Thanks"? You will if you are polite.

A new study shows students seem to be less and less polite as they grow up and middle school students aren't as polite as primary school students. They start to swear（说脏话） and laugh at their classmates.

Wu Lin, 13, of Fujian, said, "More than 10 of 22 boys in my class often swear. We just swear for fun most of the time. But later, I understood that it was bad for me. So I stopped."

Li Fangfang, 13, Beijing, knows that laughing at others can really hurt. "Once, a classmate put up her hand to answer a question. But she didn't give the right answer. Then some classmates laughed at her," Li said. "From that day on, she never put up her hand. Those laughing kids hurt her a lot."

"Impoliteness comes from students' growing pains（痛苦）," said Wang Yamin, a teacher of a university. "Some middle school students become impolite because their classmates or parents do things that way. They think it's cool and funny. But our people are famous for politeness. Every student should speak and do things politely to respect （尊敬） others and let others respect you."

Do you like swimming? As is known to us all, it is one of {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(popular) sports in summer. People like swimming in summer because water makes them cool {#blank#}2{#/blank#} relaxed. But it may be not safe {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(go) swimming in a wrong place. Last year, some people {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(die) while they were having fun in the water in my city. And most {#blank#}5{#/blank#} them were students. But some people still don't take it {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(serious). They say they swim {#blank#}7{#/blank#} well that no accident can happen to them in water. However, don't forget that better swimmers have lost their {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(life) because they were not careful, not because they couldn't swim. So don't swim when you are alone. If there is {#blank#}9{#/blank#} "No Swimming" sign, don't get into the water either. If all these {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(remember), swimming will be much safer.
