It was a snowy day. I 1 the friend who sat with me on winter evenings, talking about our experiences and thoughts—a true 2 .

An hour before dinner, the phone rang. 

"I've got up. I've been in bed all day. Looking forward to the 11 ."

I was happy. 

An hour later, she 12 , holding a piece of chocolate. 

We sat by the fireplace, eating and chatting. The smell of the vegetables filled the house. And we 13 love, art and travels. Everything was warm and good. 

As she left, she said. "Those vegetables were delicious. They kept me from 14 I didn't choose macaroni and cheese."

"Next time," I promised. And I went inside, quite satisfied, because I knew there would be ad next time, and I didn't feel 15 anymore."

When I was twelve, I wrote the first note to my mother, "Hi, Mom! Have a nice day! Love, Marie! ", and I folded the note into her change purse(零钱包) . 

My mother worked as a cleaner in a clothing factory. I knew that when she bought meals in the dining hall, she would have to look for change in her purse. I didn't know that she would keep that note, and always carry it with her. 

From the day that I carefully folded the small piece of paper into my mother's change purse. ____. They would be put in the fridge, under a lamp, or beside the TV set. I even found one hidden in my shoe. From the outside, our notes may have been general records of our days, ideas and wishes. But to my mother and me, they were a lifeline—a special communication with each other that no one else shared. 

On October 20, 2009, my mother died after a long illness. I stood near her bed, holding her hand. I didn't cry the day my mom died, and I didn't cry a week later when I went to collect her things. I was so thankful that she no longer had aches and pains. 

Recently, I found a note that my mom had left me. It had been hidden in the pages of my favorite childhood book for years. It read, "Dear Marie, I love you always. Miss you a lot. Don't forget me. Be happy! Love, Mom" That day, I cried. 

Cai Zongqi is a teacher from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Having lived in the United States for nearly 40 years, he has spent around 30 years sharing his understanding of Chinese literature (文学) 1 his students.

In 2007, his book How to Read Chinese Poetrycame out. 2 book includes 143 famous Chinese poems. Cai said he couldn't find good teaching materials to perfectly explain 3 Chinese poems meant. With the help of the book, American students can understand Chinese poetry 4 than before.

The book 5 is so popular has been reprinted (再次印刷) time and again. Encouraged by this, Cai went on to write some more 6 including How to Read Chinese Prose (散文) .

Cai believes that reading Chinese poetry may help readers to look at 7 life from a new point of view and live a better life. Cai started the How to Read Chinese Poetry podcast (播客) in 2022 8 the beauty of Chinese poetry and literature to more people around the world. In the podcast, poems 9 aloud in English and Chinese with classical Chinese music in the background.

A man lived happily in a village because everyone praised him.

One day, he happened to hear some people talking about him.1 what they said made him sad. They said he was too proud. From then on, whenever he heard others2 , he thought they were saying something bad about him. He was 3 all the time. His wife noticed this and took him to a wise old man.

Willie and his little dog Bounce were best friends. Willie taught his dog many interesting tricks, and often said that Bounce could do almost anything in the world but talk.

One day, Willie walked with Bounce down to the river, which was very close to his father Mr. Brown's store.

Willie began to throw stones into the water and watch ripples (涟漪). Bounce lay on the grass, enjoying the warm sunshine.

There were some logs (原木) floating in the river near the bank. Willie jumped upon one of them to see if he could throw a stone across the river. Just as he was about to throw, the log turned and he fell into the water. He was so scared, for he did not know how to swim, and there was no one nearby.

Not being a big water dog, poor Bounce ran up and down the bank two or three times, barking (叫), looking first at Willie and then around. Then he ran to Mr. Brown's store as fast as he could.

When he got there, he caught hold of Mr. Brown's clothes, then ran to the door, then back again, catching at him, barking and jumping. Mr. Brown realized something was wrong. He went with the dog.

Soon the father came to the river, and saw Willie struggling (挣扎) in the water. Luckily, his father saved him. When he got over his fear, no one seemed to be more delighted than Bounce, his true friend.

Last week our school held a sports meeting. Everyone in our class felt very excited {#blank#}1{#/blank#} we were the winners. In the boys' relay race (接力赛), Michael ran very fast and our class {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(win) first place. Yu Ting is {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(good) at the long jump than any other girl. She took part in it and won the first prize (奖). We're sorry that we did {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(badly) in the high jump than last time. But we're sure we can do much {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(well) next time. I took part in the boys' 400-metre race. I did my best and was the first {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (pass) the finishing line. I had {#blank#}7{#/blank#} great time in the race. Now I love sports better. I want to be a soccer {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(play). I will take {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (much) exercise every day and work harder. I hope some day I {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (be) able to take part in the Olympic Games. Let's wait and see!
