The great Zen（禅宗）teacher, Benzei had many pupils. One day, one of them was caught because of stealing things by other students. And they reported him to Benzei, but he took no action against the boy.

    A few days later, the same boy stole another student's things and was again caught. And again Benzei did nothing. This made the other students angry, and they wrote a petition(请愿书) to ask the teacher to send away the thief from school. They all threatened to leave if the boy was allowed to stay.

    The teacher called a meeting of the students. When they had arrived, he said to them, "You are good boys who know what is right and what is wrong. If you leave, you will have no trouble in joining any other school. But what about your brother who does not even know the difference between right and wrong? Who will teach him if I don't? No, I cannot ask him to go even if it means losing all of you. "

   Tears coursed down(流下) the cheeks of the boy who had stolen. From then on, he never stole again and became an honest man.

    Sometime ago I discovered that one of my chairs had a broken leg. I didn't think there would be any difficulty in getting it repaired, as there are a lot of antique (古董) shops near my home. So I left home one morning carrying the chair with me. I went into the first shop expecting a friendly reception.  I was quite wrong. The man wouldn't even look at my chair.

    The second shop, though a little more polite, was just the same, and the third and the fourth. I realized that my approach must be wrong so I decided to try another way. I entered the fifth shop with a plan in my mind.  I placed the chair on the floor and said to the shopkeeper, "Would you like to buy a chair? Twenty pounds," I said. "OK. I'll give you twenty pounds for it,"he said. "It's got a slightly broken leg," I added. "Yes, I saw that.  It's nothing," the shopkeeper replied.

    Everything was going according to the plan and I was getting excited. "What will you do with it?" I asked. "Oh, it will be easy to sell after the repair is done.""I'll buy it," I said.  "What do you mean? You've just sold it to me," the man asked in surprise.  "Yes, I know. But I've changed my mind.  I am sorry. I'll give you twenty-seven pounds for it." "You must be crazy," he said. Then, suddenly the penny dropped. He shouted, "I know what you want. You want me to repair your chair." "You're right,"I said, "And what would you have said if I had walked in and asked you to repair my chair?" "I wouldn't have agreed to do it. We don't do repairs, not enough money in it and too much trouble.  But I'll repair this for you.  Five pounds will be the cost,"the man answered. He was a very nice man and was greatly amused by the whole thing.

    Mrs. Brown goes to see her son in London. Her son works in a music club(俱乐部) there. Mrs. Brown doesn't know London well. And she can't find her way.

    She sees a man at a bus stop. She wants to ask the man the way. “Excuse me! But can you help me, please? Which bus goes to Miller's Shop?” Mrs. Brown asks.

    The man is very friendly. He smiles(微笑). But he can't speak English. He can speak French(法语). He is new in London. He puts his hand into his coat and takes out a small book. He opens it and reads something on it. “I'm sorry, I can't speak English.”

    Dick lived in England. One day in January he said to his wife, “I'm going to fly to New York next week because I've got some work there.” “Where are you going to stay there?” his wife asked. “I don't know yet.” Dick answered. “Please send me your address from there in a telegram (电报),” his wife said. “All right,” Dick answered.

    He flew to New York on January 31st and found a nice hotel in the center of the city. He put his things in his room and then he sent his wife a telegram. He put the address of his hotel in it.

    In the evening he didn't have any work, so he went to a cinema. He came out at nine o'clock and said, “Now I'm going back to my hotel and have a nice dinner.”

    He found a taxi (出租车) and the driver said, “Where do you want to go?” But Dick didn't remember the name and address of his hotel.

    “Which hotel are my things in?” he said, “and what am I going to do tonight?” But the driver of the taxi did not know. So Dick got out and went into a post office. There he sent his wife another telegram, and in it he wrote, “Please send me my address at this post office.”

    Mr. Knott [not] is a teacher. He teaches in a big school in London. Because he lives a long way from the school, he is usually quite tired（疲惫的） when he get home. At nine o'clock one evening when he is in bed, the telephone rings（铃响）, so he answers the phone, " Hello! Who's that?"

    "Watt [what]." a man says.

    "What's your name, please?" says Mr. Knott.

    "Watt's my name," the man answers.

    "Yes, I asked you that what is your name." Mr. Knott asks.

    "I told you. Watt's my name." says the man. "Are you Jack Smith?"

    "No, I'm Knott," says Mr. Knott.

    "But what's your name?" the man says.

    Mr. Knott and Mr. Watt put their telephone down and think, "What a foolish（愚蠢的）man!"

    Long long ago, there was a spider. She found a beautiful farm. She liked the farm and decided to live there forever.

    One day, the spider caught a little bug. When the spider ate it，the bug said, "If you let me go, I will tell you an important thing. The thing will save your life." The spider stopped and listened.

    The little bug said," You'd better get out of the farm. The harvest is coming! If you stay here, you will be killed by the farmer's machine."

    But the spider didn't listen to the bug and ate it for lunch. The next day when she was sleeping, the farmer came to have a harvest. The spider was killed by the machine.
