It's 7:00 a. m. on Friday in Beijing. Anna is having a video chat with her family in America. In the video, Anna's family are sitting around a big table. It's 6:00 p. m. in America and it's the night before Friday. Today is Thanksgiving Day in America. Anna's mother makes a lot of delicious food. Anna sees the turkey—the must-eat on Thanksgiving Day. Anna's brother Nick is talking with her.

"Hi, Anna,"Nick says."We are taking a trip tomorrow."

"Oh, really?I hope you'll have a good time."

"Would you like to know where we are going?"

"Mom loves Thailand. Are you going to Thailand?"

"No. We miss you and we are going to Beijing to see you!"

Anna sees her family's faces and cries. No one loves you like your family.

Technology plays an important part in our daily life now. Yet not many of us {#blank#}1{#/blank#} how much we rely on it until we compare our lives to those in the past. There was no {#blank#}2{#/blank#} technology at that time，yet the items that people had were quite enough for them to live their lives.

Without necessary cooking tools, the people could still {#blank#}3{#/blank#} to make their food as nice as our food today. Animal parts were thrown away if they were not delicious. Others were cooked over the fire. However，everything they {#blank#}4{#/blank#} was taken from the forests around them.

When someone says, "Well, I guess I'll have to go to face the music", it does not mean he is planning to go to a concert. It is something far1 , like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this or that, and why you did not do this or that. Sour (剌耳的; 拙劣的) music, indeed, but it has to be faced. 

The phrase "to face the music" is2 to every American, young and old. It is at least 100 years old. Where did the expression come from?

The first information comes from the American writer James Fennimore Cooper. He said in 1851 that the expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go on stage.3 they got their clue (提示) to go on, they often said, "It's time to go to face the music. " And that is exactly what they did—face the orchestra (管弦乐队) which was just below the stage. 

An actor might be 4 or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of the audience that might be friendly or perhaps unfriendly especially if he forgot his lines. But he had to go out. So, "to face the music" came to mean having to go through something, no matter how terrible the experience might be, because you know you 5 . 

The other explanation comes from the army. Men had to face inspection (视察) by their leader. The soldiers6 about how well they looked. Was their equipment clean and shiny enough to pass inspection? Still, the men had to go out, and face the music of the band, as well as the inspection. What else could they do?

When I was in fourth grade, I worked part-time as a paperboy. Mrs.Stanley was one of my customers. She'd watch me coming down her street, and by the time I'd biked up to her doorstep, there'd be a cold drink waiting.

I'd sit and drink while she talked. Mrs. Stanley talked mostly about her dead husband,"Mr.Stanley and I went shopping this morning." she'd say. The first time she said that, cola went up my nose.

I told my father how Mrs. Stanley talked as if Mr.Stanley were still alive. Dad said she was probably lonely(孤独的)， and that I should sit and listen and nod my head and smile, and maybe she'd go out from her sadness. So that's what I did, and it turned out Dad was right. After a while, she seemed to be better then.

I finally stopped delivering newspapers and didn't see Mrs.Stanley for several years. One day, we saw her at a church. She was spooning potatoes and looking happy. Four years before, she had to offer her paperboy a drink to have someone to talk with. Now she had friends. Her husband was gone, but life went on.

I live in the city now, and my newsboy is a lady named Edna with three kids. She asks me how I'm doing. When I don't say "Fine," she sits down and listens to my problems. She's lived in the city most of her life. She knows about the neighborhood. The neighborhood is a state of mind. You find it whenever people ask how you're doing because they care, and not because they're getting paid to do so. Sometimes it's good to Just smile, nod your head and listen.

Classic books never go out of fashion. The Outsiders first came out in 1967. Even though the book is old, it is still worth reading. It is written by the US writer S. E. Hinton. 

The book tells the story of a 14-year-old boy called Ponyboy Curtis. He struggles with right and wrong in a society where he believes he is an outsider. The story took place in Oklahoma, the US, in the 1960s. 

In the book, the children are divided into two groups. One includes Curtis and Greasers, which is mostly made up of poor kids. They have longer hair and often smoke at a young age. The other group is called the Soes, which is made up of rich children. They wear expensive clothes and drive high-tech cars. Those two groups do not get along well. 

I was touched by the friendship among the boys. When any of them had a problem, the others would help. Although they are not well educated(教育), they are kind and brave. For example, when Johnny was hurt and in hospital, his friends visited him almost every day. They brought him food and told him interesting stories. I always dreamed of having kind and strong friendships like this. 

This book shows the beautiful personalities(人格) of those ordinary people. I advise that teenagers read this book and I hope they can enjoy it.
