Who's That There?

Stand in front of a mirror and look at it. How much do you really know about the person in it?

It's not an easy job to know ourselves. To help students do this important task, schools across China are providing more classes and activities on self- knowledge. 

Liu Yue, a teacher from Chengdu Yucai Middle School, has recently given her students a useful tool. "It's called the Johari Window, developed by two US psychologists, " said Liu. "It has four areas about one's self: open area(that everyone knows about), hidden area(that only you know), blind spot(that everyone knows except you) and unknown area (that nobody knows). Using this tool, students did a good job seeing themselves through a new lens(透镜). "

"I really want to know about my blind spot, " said eighth- grade r Yang Manfei. "So I did a survey with my friends. " The results showed that Yang easily gets worried and nervous and impatient because of procrastination(拖 延 ). "That's a bad habit I've never realised!" Yang said. 

"I find the unknown area most amazing, " said Sun Boyin. "It means everyone has lots of potential (潜力). " When Sun entered middle school, he was not good at maths. "But I set a goal and did lots of maths exercises. Now I'm much better at maths. The unknown part of my maths ability is getting clearer!" Sun said. 

When it came to the hidden area, most students kept silent. "I'm scared to show my secrets deep down," said Li Yixuan. "Then one classmate stood up and said his favourite cartoon is Tom and Jerry. I thought: Am I brave enough to show my childish hobby? Perhaps not. I want my classmates to see me as a mature(成熟的) person, not a silly kid. But then I realised that I don't find that classmate silly. I think he is brave to be himself. "

"Show yourself and make yourself better — that's the best lesson I learned," Li said. 

A Theme Park for Fall Outing

Here's an interview with two classmates, Jenny and Tom, discussing their choices for the class fall outing to a theme park.

◆Have you thought about which theme park we should visit for the class fall outing?

Jenny: Yes, Adventure World. It has a huge kinds of attractions like roller coasters, water rides, and even an animal exhibit. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} I think it'll keep the whole class entertained.

Tom: That's a great option! I'm considering FunLand. It's smaller, but they offer a lot of interactive (互动) experiences, like virtual (虚拟) reality games and live performances.

◆What do you think about the location?

Jenny: Adventure World is about two hours away by bus, which is a bit of a trip, but I think the attractions make it worth the drive. Plus, the scenery along the way could be nice.

Tom: FunLand is only an hour away from school, so it's more convenient. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

◆Have you checked the cost?

Jenny: Yes, Adventure World offers a group discount (打折) for schools, so the entrance fee isn't too bad. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

Tom: FunLand is cheaper in terms of the entrance fee, but the food and extra activities inside, like the VR games, are more expensive. We might need to bring some extra cash for food or souvenirs.

Jenny: Adventure World has a great safety record. They have lifeguards for all activities. I also noticed they have a first-aid station near the entrance.

Tom: FunLand is also really good with safety. I've heard they're very strict with safety checks before anyone can get on the rides.

 Shyness is a kind of fear. People who are shy always worry too much about what people think of them or embarrassing themselves in some way in front of others. How can we overcome shyness?

◆Have a good posture (姿势)

 The way a person holds himself/ herself says a lot about that person. People with sloped (倾斜的) shoulders don't think of themselves as important. To have a good posture, you should stand up straight, shoulders back, keep your head up, and always look at the eyes of others. By practicing a good posture, you will feel you have the ability to do things well. 

◆Increase your walking speed

 You can tell if a person is confident by the way he walks. People who walk in a slow way, and look at the ground while walking usually have no confidence in themselves. While people who have confidence in themselves walk faster. That is because they have important things to do, friends to meet, places to go, etc. So walk a little faster, head held up, and look straight ahead. 

◆Do some exercise

 Exercise increases your energy in the body. That will put you in a more positive (积极的) state of mind. By having exercise, you will feel sure of yourself. Think about it. It is better to do some exercise than just watching TV all day. 

◆Do things you enjoy

 This can be anything that you really enjoy doing, like traveling, going to the theater, listening to music, helping someone out with a problem, etc. 

If you are hiking with a friend who is overweight, you may hear them say that the hills look steeper(更陡峭的) and the distances look farther away than what they really are. Is your friend lazy? Actually, this is just what the world looks like in their eyes.

 Scientists from Colorado State University show that being overweight distorts perception(扭曲知觉). They think distances are farther away than they actually are.

 In one study, scientists asked 66 people of different weights and sizes to say how far away a traffic cone (交通围标) was. The cone was actually 25m away. Those who were about 57kg thought it was just15m from them, but those who weighed about 146kg saw it as being 30m away.

 So far from being crazy. Overweight people simply see the world differently when thinking about exercise. The heavy weight can feel like a load (装载物) to carry.

"If you find yourself out hiking with a heavy backpack, hills are going to seem steeper, distances are going to look farther, a gap across a river are going to look bigger." Jessica Witt from Colorado State University told the Guardian.

 It's this idea that if you have to make more of an effort to climb that hill because you are carrying this heavy backpack, the hill is going to look more challenging.

"You are not seeing that hill as it is. You are seeing the world through your ability to act. You have less ability because you are having to carry this backpack." Witt said.

 Do you know how to introduce yourself successfully in a new class? As a new student in a school, you will likely be asked to introduce yourself in a class as a speech. 

 Here are some tips to make sure you can let others know about you quickly:

 Start with a smile and be friendly. This will make your classmates more interested in what you say. 

· Tell others about your name, age, class, hometown, hobbies, and interests. Talking about your family is also a good idea. 

 Speak slowly and clearly, and make eye contact with your classmates. 

· Let others know what you are good at. This may help you make new friends quickly. 

· Practice beforehand. If you do so, you will feel more comfortable when you introduce yourself.
