Stupid but serious

You see a cat sunbathing on the playground. "Hello, kitty!" You smile and walk away. About100 years ago, a scientist saw the same scene(场景). But he stopped and thought. Later, he won the Nobel Prize(诺贝尔奖).

The scientist was Niels Finsen from Denmark(丹麦). He saw a sick cat sleeping in the sun. When the sun moved, the cat moved, too. Why did the cat love the sun so much? To find out the answer, Niels kept watching the cat for days. Amazingly, the cat got better after lots of sunbathing. The sunlight could cure diseases! Then, Niels invented a light to cure human diseases and won the Nobel Prize in 1903.

In fact, many great scientific findings start from "stupid" questions and small things in life.

Scientists may ask: How many lies does a person tell in a day? How many licks(舔)does it take to eat up a lollipop? Why do roses smell good? What can we learn from animal poop(粪便)? And they take it seriously. They watch, think, and do experiments(实验) until they find an answer.

"It's such a waste of time!" You may say.

But think of the great scientist Newton(牛顿). If he just said "Ouch!" and walked away after he was hit by the apple, what might our world be like?

One day in ancient Greece, King Hiero asked a crown maker to make him a golden crown. At first, he was very happy with it. 

"It's a nice crown, isn't it?" he asked his men. Later, 

However, he began to doubt that it was a real golden crown. "Is it made completely of gold?" he wondered. He sent it to Archimedes and asked him to find out the truth. 

"This problem seems difficult to solve. What should I do?" thought Archimedes. 

Archimedes was still thinking about this problem as he filled his bath with water. When he got into the bath, some water ran over. 

"That's it!" shouted Archimedes. "I know how to solve the king's problem!"

Archimedes went straight to the palace to see the king. First, he weighed the crown and asked the king for some gold of the same weight. 

Next, he put two pots into two big bowls and filled both pots with water. He put the gold into one pot, and some water ran into the bowl. Then he put the crown into the other pot. This time, even more water ran into the bowl. 

"Look at this, " said Archimedes to King Hiero. "A crown made completely of gold displaces less water than a crown made of gold and another metal. This crown displaced more water than gold of the same weight, so I'm certain that it's not completely made of gold. "

"The crown maker tricked me, didn't he? What a bad man he is!" shouted King Hiero. He then sent the crown maker to prison. 

A daughter graduated from college. Her father planned to teach her a 1 . He said to her," My darling, you have grown up. Now I'm considering 2 my car, and can you help me get a good price for it?" The daughter agreed. Then the father asked her to take the car to 3 places and then choose the best 4 .

The daughter knew that her father's car was a good one. She was 5 that the car was worth a good price although it looked pretty old. She went to the first place—a used car market, and they offered her $1,000. Then in a pawn(典当) shop, she was told the car was worth just $200, which really 6 the daughter. Finally, she went to a car club. The workers there told the daughter 7 that the car was very hard to 8 in the market because it had been no longer in production and that they wanted to buy the car any time at $50,000 and even more.

The daughter told these 9 to her father. The father said," Don't be surprised. The value of the car is different in different places. Only the right place can give you the right value. Therefore, if you are not appreciated(赏识) by someone, do not be angry. It just means you are in the 10 place. You should move on and go to a better place where you can certainly go far."

I am Alice. My sister and I spent our last summer holidays with our uncle who is a   geologist(地质学家) and loves to collect stones.

 One day he bought us two backpacks and asked us to go to the mountain with him. We walked the whole day. Every now and then he put stones in our backpacks. To our surprise, he also took some stones out from them. But we thought he had just found better stones.

 When we returned to the house, we were very tired. The backpacks were so heavy that we felt relief(轻松) when we took them off. Yet our uncle's backpack was half empty.

" Why did you give us so many stones?" we asked.

"I didn't. You did." he said." You didn't know it, but I gave you a little attitude(态度) test today.I listened to every word you said. Whenever you were complaining(抱怨),I added a stone to your backpacks. Every time you talked about something with positive(积极的) thinking, I took out a stone. And now look at your backpacks."

 Our backpacks were full of stones.

" Your negative(消极的) thoughts are just like stones. You carry them____in your mind just like those stones in your backpacks. The more negative thoughts you have, the heavier your mind will be." said our uncle.

 With great love, our uncle taught us one of the most important lessons in life— the power(力量) of the attitude.

About three years ago, I didn't like my classmates, my parents or anyone. My classmates didn't want {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(talk) with me and my parents were always saying that other kids were {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(good) than me. I thought I was the most unlucky person in the world. 

One day I got into a big fight (打架) with one of my {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(classmate). I was so angry that I hit (打) him in his face. Just at that moment, a boy stood up and stopped the fight. He was the monitor (班长) of our class. 

{#blank#}4{#/blank#} that, he often helped me and we became good friends. When I was blue or sad, he would cheer {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(my) up. He was always there to help me when I met difficult problems. My life began to change because of such {#blank#}6{#/blank#} kind boy, my best friend. We spent a lot of{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(interest) days together. As time goes by, I have become happier and happier with people and things. My parents don't shout at me any more and my classmates be- come {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(friend) to me. 

But now, I can't often see my best friend {#blank#}9{#/blank#} he is ill and is staying in hospital. I always remember (想起) the time when we spent together. How I miss him! I hope he {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(be) all right and come back to school soon. 

When my daughter was in primary school, one day she brought home1 tiny twigs(细枝). They were trees given to the students by the school to plant.2 of them looked strong enough, but with a hope for the future I got a tool and3 them in our back yard. Over the years, an accident with the lawnmower and poor soil brought three of them to a(n)4 . Only one tree was left.

It grew5 .It never got very tall or very straight. Then, I noticed that it was going to die. The leaves on the6 branches(树枝)had fallen off. Those on the branches a little further up had turned brown. Only the top part of the tree was 7 green. I did my best to save it by feeding it with a lot of fertilizer(肥料)8 failed.

This morning I went to the9 and looked at it again. I was thinking if it would be better to just10 .I would no longer have to watch it slowly decay(腐烂). As I walked over to take a closer look at it, however, I noticed11 moving within the leaves in the topmost branches. It was a bird patiently building a nest to live in. I12 when I saw it and thought that maybe this old tree had some life and usefulness left in it yet. It may not be healthy or pretty, but it was still giving a bird a13 .

This tree reminded me of something too. All life has14 .It doesn't matter if we are young and strong or old and weak.15 the last moment we still have things to do, love for us to give, and joy for us to share.
