Liu Zhihua has become a star at a ski resort（滑雪圣地）in Urumqi, Xinjiang. She is the resort's oldest skier（滑雪者）, aged 88. 

Though she is a skilled skier now, she only took up the sport when she was 72. Before that, like many old people, she spent her days taking care of her grandchildren or watching TV. Encouraged by her children, Liu got on the piste（滑雪道）for the first time in 2007. "The first day was not easy. My arms and legs were sore. But in the next few days, I was able to walk on the skis（滑雪板）. When I was not afraid of falling, I became quite interested in the sport and fell in love with it, "Liu said". I've taken part in a competition twice. I didn't do it for a prize. Finishing the competition without falling is enough for me."

For Liu, skiing is also a way to keep her young and active. Although she is the oldest ski lover at the resort, she thinks she is just as vigorous as younger skiers . Liu skis for about two hours at a time under the protection of her trainer. Although she skis less often than before, she makes up her mind to continue as long as possible. "Doing sports brings me health and happiness," she said. "I don't think age has much to do with my mind. Old or young, I'm always brave and cheerful."

Helping others is a great thing to do. You can learn new things and have fun. There are many ways of helping others. You can help people, animals or the environment. It can make you feel good too! How can you help?

Charities (慈善机构)

Charities are organizations that help others, for example, UNICEF or the World Wildlife Fund. You can help charities by giving your time, giving money or giving things that you own. You can also help people or places you know.

Volunteering

Volunteering is when you give your time to help others. It's something which you do not have to do or for which you will not be paid. Some ways of volunteering are: visiting old people to talk to them or help them walking dogs at an animal shelter (避难所), cleaning up a park.

Fundraising

Fundraising is when you collect money to help others. Some ways of fundraising are: making cakes or biscuits to sell, doing a sponsored (赞助) activity. For example, family and friends give you money if you finish a long walk.

Donating

Donating is when you give your things or money to help others. Some ways of donating are: giving your old toys or clothes to a charity that helps sick children or poor people, giving your old books to a library, giving your money to a charity. So, what can you do to help others?

As new technologies continue to develop, many students are choosing to study STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and math) so they can get good jobs later. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}They need ideas from artists, historians and sociologists(社会学家)— in other words, people who major in liberal arts(主修文科). 

Learning how to program is not enough. The US writer Scott Hartley mentioned it in his book. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} He points out that soft skills, including communication, collaboration(合作) and understandings of social problems, are of equal importance. 

One possible solution is to put liberal arts and STEM studies together. In fact, Lewis University in the US has started to offer a set of courses called " CS + X".{#blank#}4{#/blank#} At the University of Vermont, a program called Engineering Management connects engineering with business. Engineers need to understand markets while business people need to learn engineering.

My best friend Jenny and I got to the mall for shopping. She held up a white sweater and nice skirt. "Do you like them?" she asked. 

"They're great, " I said. Jenny smiled and keep looking while I moved about, touching the beautiful clothes. "I'll try them on, " Jenny walked towards the dressing room. After a while, she came out in the outfit (一套衣服). She looked beautiful. 

Part of me wanted to say how good she looked, but another part stopped the words coming out. Jenny was in such good shape( 外 形 )that she'd look good in the outfit. Sometimes, I regretted(后悔)choosing a best friend who was so pretty. God, why can't I be the one with the rich parents and the great look? More and more, I was envious (妒忌的) of her. 

"Well, Tina, what do you think?" Jenny asked more than once. "Do you like it?"

The outfit looked great on her, but I lied, "Not really. I think you need something with more colors. "

"You think so?" Jenny said doubtfully. 

"Just believe me. We'll find something better, " I told her, pushing her back into the dressing room. "You just can't buy the first thing you see. " I did my best to get Jenny out of the store, away from that outfit. As we left, Jenny gave the outfit one last look. 

Just down the mall, we passed an ice-cream place. "My treat, " Jenny said, pulling out her wallet(钱包). 

I could never say no to ice-cream, so we got some and sat down at a table. As Jenny talked without stopping about a million things, I thought about my feelings toward her. Those feelings weren't kind. 

Sitting there, I began to see Jenny in a new light! Jenny was attractive (吸引人的) not just because of her good luck, but more because of her kindness. Treating me to ice-cream was far from her only show of generosity(大方). She also let me drive her car and borrow her clothes. 

Finishing our ice-cream, we headed for the next clothing store. "Look at that red sweater, " Jenny said when we passed the window. "It would be nice for you. Soon maybe you'll have enough by saving your pocket money to buy something like that. "

A few minutes earlier, all I had heard was about saving my pocket money. I had hated the fact that Jenny could ask her parents for anything, and they'd buy it for her. This time, however, I heard more. I heard the voice of someone who loved for who I was. So I needed to express( 表达)the same to her. 

Parents often find children watch cartoons for at least three to four hours a day. Studies show that kids start watching cartoons on TV at an early age of six months, and by the time they reach the age of two or three, they become fans of cartoons and they would like to spend much time on them. Is it good for kids to watch cartoons?

Parents often see this as a problem because most of the kids are too crazy about watching cartoons. Parents think if kids spend too much time on cartoons, they won't do well at school. 

Some people think it's good to watch cartoons. They help the working parents the most because parents can do a lot of work when their kids watch cartoons on TV. 

When children watch educational cartoons, they get to learn things. Cartoons also help to improve children's language skills. Educational cartoons help children try different languages. Kids can learn English well with the help of those cartoon programs. At the same time, some kids can learn about the friendship and teamwork from the cartoons. It is good for them to get on well with their friends and classmates. 

So sometimes it is meaningless to stop kids from watching cartoons, but parents should make sure that their kids are watching the right things.
