The summer vacation is the best time for students. They can go outdoors and have fun. They can go to big cities to 1, or go to the countryside to enjoy the beauty of 2.

    Peter is an American middle school student and he loves 3 very much. He always travels in his country.

    This summer vacation he did 4. He was interested in Chinese history. 5 he flew to Beijing and Xi'an for the summer vacation. ④Backpacking, in fact, is much more than a holiday—for young people in Europe, it is seen as a way of learning about the world. Backpackers often travel alone for many months, as this is seen as more of an adventure and challenge. Beyond finding new worlds, backpacking, people say, is all about "finding yourself". 

Are you good at learning English grammar? What do you think about learning grammar when studying a foreign language? 

I was a young English teacher in a middle school. One day, a student asked, "Mr. Lewis, what is the difference between a period（句号） and a comma（逗号）?" I hated these grammar rules and hardly understand them myself. As I looked at the textbook, I knew that even if I told this student all the different rules about commas, he wouldn't remember them. 

I was also in no mood（心情） for a long lesson. My mum had died just a few short weeks ago. I missed her so much. All I wanted to do was stay in bed, but my own young family was living a difficult life and I knew I had to take every day of work I could. 

I looked at the textbook again but couldn't read it because my eyes were so watery. All at once, however, I got an idea. "A period is the end of a sentence or a thought," I said, "A comma, on the other hand, is just a short pause（停顿） before the sentence continues on." When I finished saying this, my heart suddenly felt lighter. I smiled and thought of my mum continuing on in a place much brighter and happier than the one I was in now. 

That little moment of light helped me as I continued to miss my mum over the months and years to come. Recently I remembered it once again when I saw this sentence in a book I was reading: "Death is not a period, only a comma."

Our lives are a sentence and a story that goes on forever. Our time here is only a part of it. 

 Hi, I'm Tom. I have a pencil box. It's my good friend. It's from my mom. What's in the pencil box? My ruler is in it. It's blue and red. That is a pencil. It is black and white. It's not my pencil. It's Cindy's. She likes black and white. You can see a green pen and an eraser in it, too. The pen isn't mine. I found it in the classroom this morning. It's Tim's. His name is on it. He isn't at school now. The nice eraser is my sister Linda's.

Jo was the first to wake. She remembered her mother's promise, and, putting her hand under her pillow(枕头), drew out a little red-covered book. She loved it. She woke Meg up and asked her to see what was under her pillow. A green-covered book appeared. Then Beth and Amy woke, to find their little books also. 

"Girls, " said Meg seriously, "Mother wants us to read and love these books, and we must begin at once. I shall read a little every morning, for I know it will do me good. "

And then they opened the new books and read. The rooms were very quiet, and the winter sunshine shone in to touch the serious faces with a Christmas greeting. 

"Where is Mother?" asked Meg, as she ran down to thank her for their gifts, half an hour later. 

"Some poor men come for help, and Mrs. March went straight off to see what was needed, " replied Hannah, who was considered more as a friend than a servant. 

"She will be back soon, so we must get everything ready, " said Meg, looking over the presents which were collected in a basket, ready to be given to their mother at the proper time. "Why, where is Amy's bottle of cologne(古龙香水)?" she wondered. 

"She took it out a minute ago, " replied Jo. 

"There's Mother. Hide the basket, quick!" cried Jo, as door opened, and steps sounded in the hall. 

Amy hurried in, and looked rather ashamed(羞愧的) when she saw her sisters all waiting for her. 

"Where have you been, and what are you hiding behind you?" asked Meg, surprised to see that lazy Amy had been out so early. 

"You see, I felt ashamed of my present, so I ran round the corner and changed the little bottle for a big one and I gave all my money for it; and I'm truly trying not to be selfish any more. "

Another bang(砰砰作响) of the street door sent the girls to the table. 

"Merry Christmas, Marmee! Thank you for our books; we love them, " they said together. 

"Merry Christmas, little daughters! I'm glad you like the books. But I want to say one word before we sit down. Not far from here lies a poor woman with a little new-born baby. They were suffering hunger and cold. My girls, will you give them your breakfast as a Christmas present?"

They were all unusually hungry, having waited for nearly an hour, and for a minute no one spoke; only a minute, for Jo said, "I'm so glad you came before we began!"

Stand in front of a mirror and look at it. How much do you really know about the person in it?

It's not an easy job to know ourselves. To help students do this important task, schools across China are providing more classes and activities on self- knowledge. 

Liu Yue, a teacher from Chengdu Yucai Middle School, has recently given her students a useful tool. "It's called the Johari Window, developed by two US psychologists, " said Liu. "It has four areas about one's self: open area(that everyone knows about), hidden area(that only you know), blind spot(that everyone knows except you) and unknown area (that nobody knows). Using this tool, students did a good job seeing themselves through a new lens(透镜). "

"I really want to know about my blind spot, " said eighth- grade r Yang Manfei. "So I did a survey with my friends. " The results showed that Yang easily gets worried and nervous and impatient because of procrastination(拖 延 ). "That's a bad habit I've never realised!" Yang said. 

"I find the unknown area most amazing, " said Sun Boyin. "It means everyone has lots of potential (潜力). " When Sun entered middle school, he was not good at maths. "But I set a goal and did lots of maths exercises. Now I'm much better at maths. The unknown part of my maths ability is getting clearer!" Sun said. 

When it came to the hidden area, most students kept silent. "I'm scared to show my secrets deep down," said Li Yixuan. "Then one classmate stood up and said his favourite cartoon is Tom and Jerry. I thought: Am I brave enough to show my childish hobby? Perhaps not. I want my classmates to see me as a mature(成熟的) person, not a silly kid. But then I realised that I don't find that classmate silly. I think he is brave to be himself. "

"Show yourself and make yourself better — that's the best lesson I learned," Li said.
