My mother is a hard-working and kind woman. She is very busy from morning till night. As a teacher, she works hard. Both my brother and I love her dearly as she loves us.

My mother has been teaching math at a middle school in my hometown. She goes to work early in the morning and does not return home until late in the afternoon. She treats them with patience and teaches them well. For her excellent quality and very good teaching results, she has been elected as a model teacher several times.

Every day, when she comes back home from work, she sets about doing housework, sweeping the living room and bedrooms or cleaning the furniture, and putting everything in good order. She seems to be busy all the time. As she has been very busy working every day, she looks older than her age. But she looks as cheerful and happy as ever. Mother never buys expensive dresses for herself, but she often buys some inexpensive but high quality clothes for us. She just eats a plain meal outside when she is too busy to cook herself. She lives a busy yet simple life, without any complaints.

Often she says to us, “work while you work, and play while you play. That is the way to be happy and gay. If you do not work, you will become lazy and be of no use to society”. What a piece of good advice this is!  This advice of hers will always serve as a guide to my behavior. My mother is great indeed, and I always feel proud of her.

A. She enjoys listening to classic music.

B. As a mother, she takes good care of us and gives us every comfort.

C. She loves her students and cares for them.

D. She never goes to expensive restaurants to enjoy meals.

E. My mother is hard-working and never wastes money.

F. I never forget it and always bear it in my mind.

G. Can you tell us something about your mother?

Wrong Reasons for Going to College

A college education can be priceless.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}If any of these following factors had abig influence on your decision, you're probably right to second-guess yourself.

Because all your friends are going.

In only a few weeks' time, the whole friend group will be scattered to a half dozen different colleges in a half dozen different places. Not to go will set yourself apart.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}Because someone else expects it from you.

Perhaps you come from a family where everyone goes to college,or maybe you're the kid that everyone is proud to believe will be the first toget there.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}It's become so mucha part of the air you breathe that you've never stopped to consider whether you want to go or whether you're ready to go.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#}It's beentough to find even a summer job. You don't have an alternative plan. Everyone else is doing it (see above). You think you might as well go to school. That isthe lamest(无说服力的)of reasons tospend $ 20,000 or more in the next year.

Because you are afraid you'll regret it if you don't go.

Your uncle tells you that he regrets that he didn't go tocollege. Others tell you they could have gone so much further in their career if only they had a college education.  {#blank#}5{#/blank#} So this is not a persuasive reason for you togo to college.

b. Friends will wonder what's wrong with you.

c. Because you don't know what else to do.

d. Everyone seems more excited than you are.

Trust has been considered as the basis of any relationship, including friendship. No relationship can last long with a lack of trust. Not many of your friends will have real faith in you as you would like to believe. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Sometimes, it takes years, even a complete lifetime, to trust someone. However, how do we know if our friends have faith in us?

{#blank#}2{#/blank#} With whom will you share things that you don't want everyone to know? It would be with a close friend, whom you trust as much as you trust yourself.

Whom do you look up to for advice when you need it the most? It has to be either your parents or your friends. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}____ This is a shining example of trust. You only seek advice from people you hold in high regard and find dependable. The friends who trust you will never forget to include you in the important decisions of their life.

Arguments and heated discussions are a part of every relationship, and this is also true for friendship. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} While some people find it difficult to forgive and forget, your friends will never have problems moving on. It is because they trust you and believe that you will never cause any pain to them on purpose.

There are times in life when you find yourself a lonely soldier. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Your friends will never let you down and will strongly stand for you when you need encouragement. You can determine that they trust you and believe in your beliefs if they side with you when you need them the most.

A. People can be extraordinarily jealous sometimes.

B. You know they will never pass on a wrong suggestion.

C. In fact, winning trust is, by far, the most challenging aspect of relationships.

D. Two people can't have the same reactions to a situation and different opinions do exist.

E. No matter how close you are to your friends, you can't take that comfort level for granted.

F.If your friends share their secrets, there's a good possibility that they have much faith in you.

G. However, people fortunate to have been blessed with true friends are never alone in any battle.

Venom (毒液) from a local scorpion (蝎子) in Cuba is being used by Cuban scientists as an effective weapon to fight cancer. The venom, with stopping pain, anti-inflammatory (炎症) and anti-cancer properties, is the active ingredient in the medicine “Vidatox 30 CH,” which can be used to treat liver, brain, lung and other cancers. The treatment has been successfully used for more than four years in humans after being first tested in biological models. Labiofam, a Cuban laboratory, has breeding (繁殖) centers for both the Red Scorpion and Blue Scorpion. Each month, some 30,000 scorpions in Las Minas town, 270 km east of Havana are made to give the venom. After two years, the scorpions are released back into their natural habitat.

Denyer Sanchez, a biologist from Labiofam, explained that the conditions are adjusted for reproduction, proved by the high number of breeding female scorpions. He said when the offspring (后代) becomes able to live in the environment, we release them because they do not have the necessary size yet to remove their venom, said Sanchez. Sanchez also said that there is still much to research on the exploitation process of scorpions, such as female death rate or the ability to survive of the released scorpions.

Cuban research on the scorpion's venom began at the end of 1980s in Guantanamo province, the island's eastern tip, where a group of biologists and doctors became interested in the stories told by the peasants about the venom's benefits. However, the first discovery was made by Cuban biologist Misael Bordier. In 2001, Bordier visited Mexico's National Autonomous University (UNAM) and presented the research progress in a professional journal. Bordier died in 2005, one year before Cuba's Industrial Property Office gave Labiofam the rights to exploit the patent related to the venom.

I came to Rio, Brazil to work one year ago. So what have I found here?
    You need to learn Portuguese
I started studying Portuguese about two years ago. I didn't end up improving my Portuguese as much as I'd hoped before I came here. While Spanish and Portuguese are structurally quite similar, there are huge differences between the two. You can't just magically understand Brazilians if you speak Spanish.
I didn't need to bring heels
Going out in cities like Buenos Aires is a big deal. You get dressed up, you do your hair, and you definitely wear heels- at least if you're going out to dance. I had no idea how wrong I was. Yes, Rio is a city, but it's a city on the beach. Of course, there are fancy clubs that probably expect everyone to show up in dress shoes(时装鞋), but most of the places I've been to are fine with sneakers, even for dancing.
Learning about pop music is a must
Whenever I go out and a pop song comes on, every single other person there sings along to all the words. I still haven't understood if there are only 25 songs that get played in public or if people really do just have a fantastic memory for lyrics, but either way, I wish I'd spent a bit more time practicing Brazilian pop music so I wouldn't look like such a lost foreigner.
Airplanes are a surprisingly sensitive subject
In Brazil, the credit for modern flight goes to Alberto Santos Dumont. Brazilians say the Wright Brothers' use of a catapult(飞机弹射器) was technically cheating and point to their man as the real pioneer of the plane. Therefore, be careful before bringing up the subject of planes in Brazil unless you're ready for a lecture.

A Few Tips for Self- Acceptance

We all want it. .. to accept and love ourselves. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Where do you start? Here's a handful of ways that will set you in the right direction.

• Stop comparing yourself with others. Do not follow the people who make you feel not- good- enough. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Are you hoping that eventually you will feel empowered because your life is better than theirs? Know that your life is your own; you are the only you in this word.

·{#blank#}3{#/blank#} We are often ashamed of our shortcomings, our mistakes and our failures. Remember, you are only human. You will make mistakes, time and time again. Rather than getting caught up in how you could have done better, why not offer yourself a compassionate(有同情心) response?" That didn't go as planned. But, I tried my best."

●Recognize all of your strengths. Write them down in a journal. Begin to train your brain to look at strength before weakness. List all of your accomplishments and achievements. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Nothing is too small to celebrate.

●Now that you' ve listed your strengths list your imperfections. Turn the page in your journal. Put into words why you feel unworthy, and why you don't feel good enough. Now, read these words back to yourself. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Turn to a page in your journal to your list of strengths and achievements. See how awesome you are?

A. But at times it seems too difficult and too far out of reach.

B. Feeling upset again?

C. You have a job, earned your degree, and you got out of bed today.

D. Forgive yourself for mistakes that you have made.

E. Why do you follow them?

F. Set an intention for self- acceptance.

G. When does the comparison game start?
