In ancient times, there was a king who loved flowers. His palace was always decorated with beautiful orchids(兰花)and other flowers. As the king grew older, he knew that one day he would have to give up his throne(王位). He had to find someone new to rule the country.

    He came up with a competition. He asked his servants to travel to every part of the country and give every person a flower seed. He then announced that whoever grew him the most beautiful flower would take his throne.

    Everyone in the country then got their own seed. One young man named David was especially excited about the competition, as he had experience growing flowers himself,

    David planted his seed in a pet and put it in a place where it would get lots of sunlight. He took care to water it every day. But as hard as he tried, his flower simply would not grow.

    Finally, it was time for everyone to show their flowers to the king. David took his empty pot to the palace.

    "Your Majesty, I am sorry to say that I could not grow a flower this time at all, ________,"he said.

    The king was quite satisfied with David's honesty. Although he did not choose David as the new king, he gave David a job as a judge(法官). He believed that David's honesty would make him the right person to make sure the justice(公正)in the country.

An old man was sitting on the sofa with Mike, his 45-year-old son. Suddenly a dove (鸽子) landed on the ground. 

The father asked his son, "What is this?"

The son replied, "It is a dove."

After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, "What is this?"

The son said, "Father, I have just told you. It's a dove."

After a little while, the old father asked his son for the third time, "What is this?"

This time Mike could not control his anger and shouted, "It's a dove, a dove. Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again? I have told you so many times 'IT IS A DOVE!' Don't you understand this?"

The old man silently took out an old diary, turned to a page and showed it to Mike. Though a little impatient (不耐烦), Mike began to read it. 

"Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a dove landed on the ground, and my son asked me what it was. I smiled at him, said it was a dove and hugged (拥抱) him. After a while Mike asked me again and I did the same. Pointing to the same dove, little Mike asked me what it was 23 times and I kept on answering his question and hugging him every time."

Something gently touched Mike's heart. His face turned red with shame for being so impatient to his father and he hugged him tightly (紧紧地). 

Your parents have given you many things in their lifetime, but you may not realize that until they are gone. 

Jackson was driving back home along a road one evening. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} It was winter and it was very cold, just like his feelings.

An old lady with her car was standing on one side of the road. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. The lady looked scared even when he put a smile on his face. Was he going to hurt her? He didn't look like a good man and he looked poor and hungry.

Jackson knew how she felt. He said, "{#blank#}3{#/blank#}Why don't you wait in my car? By the way, my name is Jackson."

The lady thought for a while and then went into his car. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Jackson went under her car to repair it. When he finished, he got dirty and his hands hurt. Then the lady told him that her name was Annie. She asked Jackson how much she should pay for his help.

Jackson never thought about getting money. This was not a job for him. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone in need, she should give that person.

John is a student in Guangming Primary School（小学）. He doesn't like sports and he doesn't like 1 homework. He often says to his teacher, "My homework is at home. " or "My homework is 2 . "

October 11th is his 3 birthday, and luckily（幸运地）, John and his classmates 4 a school trip to a park that day. 5 teacher, Miss Miller, takes her students there by train（火车）. On the train, Miss Miller says, "Now, boys and girls, we can see many interesting things outside the window. I want you 6 them carefully （仔细地） and write them down on your notebooks. It will help you 7 your composition（作文） after the trip.

Throughout history, the pillow (枕头) has a very long history. 

Nobody knows for sure when the pillow was invented and who was the i{#blank#}1{#/blank#}of it. It's said that people first used pillows in Mesopotamia around 7000 BC. The pillows were made of stones. So they were not c{#blank#}2{#/blank#} but practical. In ancient China, pillows were made of hard things, such as bamboo and wood. There were wonderful paintings of animals, h{#blank#}3{#/blank#}and plants on the pillows. In the 9th c{#blank#}4{#/blank#}, the ancient Greeks and Romans put things like feathers (羽毛) and grass into pillows to make them feel better. Since then, the softer pillows became p{#blank#}5{#/blank#}. 

Nowadays you can see different kinds of pillows in the market. 

 When Pollyanna woke up, sunlight was through the window of her room. She 1 it was a perfectly wonderful sunny Saturday and she had so many things that she wanted to do.2 , she heard a rapping(敲打) on the door. "Wake up, Pollyanna! It' s Friday— you' ll be late for 3 !"

 Pollyanna rushed out and ran down the hill as fast as she could. As she went 10 Mr. Pendleton's house, the old man waved to her and said, "Good morning!" Pollyanna smiled and turned to wave back but tripped by stones. Before she knew what was 11 , she found herself in a ditch(沟)!

 The girl's dress was a bit dirty, but she was 12 smiling. The old man couldn't help but laugh. "Look what I found in the ditch!" she was holding up some wild flowers and said. "They will make a perfect gift for my 13 !"

 Pollyanna made it to the classroom just as the bell rang. Her dress and her hair were in a mess, but when she gave the flowers to the teacher,14 laughed and cheered.
