Every year, 340 million birds are killed on roads in the US. 335,000 European hedgehogs (刺猬) are killed on roads in the UK. When driving down most highways and sometimes also on roadways in cities, animals are hit by cars or other vehicles (车辆) by accident.

A recent study showed, for the first time, the fast-developing road network is badly influencing on animals in cities in China. Li Zhongqiu and his team from Nanjing University looked at the problem and started the research. First, they chose Nanjing as the study subject. A total of nine roads were chosen for the research, including three national highways, with over 224.27 kilometers long. Then the researchers kept an eye on the roads every two weeks over a year. The team recorded a total of 293 road kill cases. Birds made up nearly half the total. Cats, dogs and blackbirds were the three most commonly killed animals. "This may be due to the large number of homeless cats and dogs in cities," Li said. Also, there are usually a large number of blackbirds in eastern China, and they can be attracted by flies or other insects, leading to further accidents.

Roadkill happens more often in November and January, the team found. This may be due to the fact that some warm-blooded animals have to go out and search for food during these times when food is harder to find. The researchers call on policymakers to develop some traffic and animal protection rules, such as speed limits and traffic controls. And they think to build special roads for animals is a good way. These are four "life passages" for animals used in some countries.

Have you ever experienced hui nan tian, or lasting humid (潮湿的) weather? Hui nan tian is a special weather phenomenon (现象) in southern China. It normally appears in spring when temperatures begin to warm up and humidity quickly increases. Before it arrives, there have usually been a few cold days, with a temperature below 12℃. As the cold air goes away, warmer air quickly comes and the temperature rises, creating a lot of water vapor. Small water droplets can be seen on windows and walls. 

During hui nan tian, the humid weather makes it easy for bacteria (细菌) to grow. Food goes bad easily, clothes stay wet, and sofas can get moldy. Electrical equipment like televisions may break down when they get wet inside, which can be dangerous for people when turning them on. It can also make people feel tired and sick. Catching a cold is common during this time. 

To cut down on the trouble caused by the lasting humid weather, scientists suggest that people in the south should close their windows in the morning and evening, especially those facing south and southeast. At the same time, they should use an air conditioner to dry the room instead of mopping floors. It's also useful to put newspapers on the floor, on tables, and at the door to take in water and wet air.

Jin Ying, 25, is a lover of Traditional Chinese Medicine（TCM）. She took part in a three- month training course on acupuncture and tuina（针灸推拿） in the winter of 2023 at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. 

Jin's life has been different since the training. She changed her life habits after learning the Five Elements theory（五行学说）. For example, she avoided sweating（流汗） too much during exercise in winter because the cold of winter means people should slow down , according to TCM. For her, learning these skills and theories was not about becoming a TCM doctor but rather about embracing（拥抱）a new lifestyle. 

She is not an unusual example of young people becoming interested in TCM. A survey by China Youth Daily showed that 93. 3 percent of the 1, 000 young people who took part had tried different TCM treatments. 

"I have seen a rising number of young people come to me for neck and back pains. which are usually related to the elderly, " said Ma Huifang, a TCM doctor at Guoyitang, a TCM hospital affiliated（附属） with Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. 

Between Western medicine and TCM, young people often choose TCM due to its efficacy（疗效 ）, according to Ma. Some people question why TCM treats the same illnesses with different prescriptions（处方）. "This. is actually an advantage of TCM, rather than a shortcoming, as it can be a more accurate treatment（精准的治疗） for different patients, " Ma explained. 

Younger age groups are embracing TCM, and, at the same time, TCM is also benefiting young people. As Jin noted, "It helps young people understand Chinese medicine and learn why it is believed to be a treasure of our Chinese culture. "
