Dear editor,

    I'm sorry to occupy your precious time, but

    Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighbourhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks(盯着他们).

    One day, Ali took Zahra's shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn't until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided (碰撞) with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.

Jenny immediately became upset. But she knew her father was serious. She walked away and went to her own room.

The following day, Jenny went to school as usual. When Lisa saw her at school, she looked a bit upset. Lisa came to her and asked why she was wearing a long face that day. Jenny said, "I asked my dad to buy a cellphone for me, but he said I should work for one myself."

It was by total bad luck that my eyes happened to meet Ms. Sullivan's.

"How about you, James?" She asked me. "Is it okay for you to take care of Rafael just for today?"

It is difficult to refuse a request by someone, especially if that person is a teacher. I sighed and nodded slightly. Ms. Sullivan gestured for Rafael to sit beside me and then asked us to share our holiday stories with the class.
