Everything is made of something. Nothing is made of nothing.

Chemistry is about the smallest things that other bigger things are made of, and what happens when they change. The word chemistry comes from chemical, which is an example of one type of the very small things that other bigger things are made of. The words you are reading now are made of a dark liquid called ink (墨水), which is written on paper. The paper itself is made out of the chemicals that wood is made out of. Both the ink and the paper were made by different chemical processes. A chemical process is what happens when chemicals come together to make other chemicals, and therefore other things.

Cooking makes chemical changes. Your different ingredients are made of different chemicals, and when you put them together and make them hot and cook them, the chemicals change into new chemicals and the different ingredients make something new. That tomato sauce you're making is made of tomatoes, onions, garlic, salt and pepper. Those ingredients each have their own chemicals and their own flavors, but now with your sauce you've made something different, something that has its own flavor, all the ingredients mixed together, all the chemicals mixed together, something new.

You can smell the chemical changes, too, as they go up into your nose, especially when you forget about your sauce and it doesn't just cook but bums and becomes black and has a really bad flavor. You can't make it better, either, because once chemicals change, they can't be changed back again.

    How green are you? Do you know how to be green?

    We all need a healthy environment, but we produce waste every day and it does harm to our environment. Though we are young, we can still do something to help. In fact, even the simplest everyday activities can make a real difference to the environment. Here are some ideas for you.

    Reduce

    Reduce means "use less". Don't waste things. This saves money and reduces pollution and waste going into the environment. Before we buy something new, think whether it is really necessary—or maybe the old one will be just as good! When we buy things, choose local products if possible, and try not to buy too many things from abroad.

    Reuse

    Reuse means "use again". Use things for as long as possible. When we buy things, make sure that they last a long time. We should look after them so that they will last, and we should repair them if we can instead of throwing them away and buying new ones. Don't use a paper cup or a paper bag. It's better to use a china (瓷器) cup and a lunch box because you can use them again.

    Recycle

    Recycle means "change things into something else". Though it takes energy to change something into something else, it's better than throwing things away or burning them. Find out what can be recycled in your neighbourhood and take part in recycling programmes. We should also buy products made from recycled materials, such as recycled paper, to help save trees.

    So please remember these three words: reduce, reuse and recycle.

 阅读下列短文,从下面每小题所给的A、B、CD四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

Theo works days, nights, and weekends in the tulip, fields in the Netherlands and never feels tired. How is this possible? Theo is an AI robot that looks fo sick flowers each spring.

The work stops viruses(病毒)from spreading among the plants. The robot looks for troubled tulip bulbs(鳞茎) and kills them if necessary. They are removed (去除) from the healthy ones,in a processing center after the harvest.

There are 45 robots like Theo working in the tulip fields of the Netherlands. Their job becomes important as the winter turns to spring and the busiest season nears. People come from around the world to see the colorful flowers.

This is the second season that Allan Visser has used a robot. He said it is very costly-the same as sports car-about $200, 000. In the past, knowledgeable farmers would walk the fields looking for tulips that showed signs of sickness. "I prefer to have the robot because a sports car doesn't take out thesick tulips from our field, " he said "Yeah, it is expensive, but there are fewer and fewer people who can really see the sick tulips.

Erik de Jong, the manager of the company that makes the robots, said all of the knowledge they use in the computer program comes from tulip farmers—farmers like Theo van der Vourt. He is the farmer after whom the robot is named.

Van der Vourt retired(退休)after 52 years of looking for sick flowers in his fields. "It's fantastic"he said, "It sees just as much as I see. "

阅读下面材料, 从方框中所给的A—E五个选项中选择正确的选项(其中一项是多余选项),并回答问题。

A. In Chinese culture, red lanterns are symbols of happiness.

B. They have become a symbol of Chinese culture worldwide.

C. It was mainly used in palaces in ancient times.

D. The shape was much like that of the palace lanterns.

E. However, traditional lanterns are still the most popular ones in people's hearts.

Lanterns have been part of Chinese culture for centuries and play an important part in many celebrations.

 Palace lantern(宫灯)

 {#blank#}1{#/blank#} When making palace lanterns, fine wood was used. The palace lanterns were covered with silk or glass. Different kinds of pictures were drawn on the covers. These lanterns were not only used as lights but also as decorations in palaces.

 Gauze lantern(纱灯)

 Less expensive bamboo and gauze (纱布) were used to cover the lantern. Red gauze was used when making them. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} So red lanterns are always hung on important testivals such as Lantern Festival, Spring Festival and National Day in parks or along main streets. In some famous China towns abroad, you can see red lanterns all the year round. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

 Shadow-picture lantern(走马灯)

 It was usually used for amusement. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} There were two layers(层) of covers and pictures were drawn on the inside layer. When the candle was lit, the heat caused a paper wheel inside the lantern to turn around, so that moving pictures appeared on the outside cover.

 Now more kinds of lanterns appear in festival s besides the traditional ones. More modern technology is used on making lanterns. There is no doubt that the modern lanterns will be more creative and interesting.

 What's the passage mainly about?(请用一句话概括, 不超过20词) {#blank#}5{#/blank#}
