Think of space! What comes to mind? No, I'm not talking about planets or aliens. I'm talking about the space we live in! The world is full of different spaces. We can think about spaces in three different ways:  public spaces, private spaces and personal spaces.

PUBLIC SPACE

Public spaces are social spaces for everyone to get together. They belong to everyone. But wait! Before you camp in your local park or throw a party at a library, remember that there are rules. The rules are set to keep these spaces clean and safe.

PRIVATE SPACE

A private space is for our own. We all need a space like homes, where we can relax and s stay alone. We are not allowed to enter a private space freely.

PERSONALSPACE

This is the space where we sit and stand. Everyone feels different about their personal spaces. People may feel uncomfortable or angry when someone they don't know gets too close.

We should respect(尊重) all spaces. We should respect public spaces. We can't leave a mess or take anything that doesn't belong to us. It's important to leave no trace(痕迹) in public spaces. We should respect private spaces by asking for permission before entering. And we should respect personal spaces by finding out how much space a friend or classmate needs to feel comfortable. Respecting all spaces helps make us better people. It also helps keep our community safe and fun,

Many Chinese words include directions or positions. What is the Chinese history and culture hidden behind these words?

When we go shopping, we say "mai dongxi" instead of "mai nanbei" in Chinese. Going back to the ancient city of Chang'an, the national capital in Tang dynasty, there were two large markets, one was in the east and the other was in the west, which were called "eastern market" and "western market". People went shopping either in the eastern market or the western one. As time went by, people started to describe shopping as "mai dongxi".

We use "shang cesuo" in Chinese to express "go to the bathroom" and "xia chufang" to mean "go to the kitchen". Why? In ancient times, houses were built in a certain way. The gate of the house would face south, with the bathroom in the north eastern part of the house and the kitchen in the south eastern part. On maps, north is usually at the top while south is at the bottom. In Chinese, we talk about "the north" as "shang" and "the south" as "xia". So people would say they were going "up" to the bathroom and "down" to the kitchen.

Ancient Chinese not only used "shang" and "xia" to refer to directions, but also social status. "Shang" was seen to be honorable, while "xia" stood for humility (谦卑). For example, people used "huangshang" to refer to the emperor and "dianxia" to refer to the son or daughter of the emperor, who had a lower status than the emperor.

When we build a new house, we often buy something beautiful to decorate it. The painting is always the first thing we want to buy. People from all over the world mostly like western paintings. But as a Chinese, I think Chinese paintings are the best.

Chinese paintings are one of the oldest kinds of paintings in the world. Chinese artists first started painting over two thousand years ago, and painters in China are still using many of the same ways today.

Chinese painters usually paint natural scenes(自然景观), animals or people. We can only see buildings in Chinese paintings when they make up a small part of a natural scene.

There are two kinds of traditional Chinese paintings. The first one is the gongbi style. People need a lot of time to make this style of painting, because they paint everything in great detail(细节). This style often uses a lot of colour. Long ago, most painters in China used the gongbi style.

The second style of Chinese painting is the ink-wash painting(水墨画), Painters usually finish ink-wash paintings very quickly and they may not always have much colour. Ink-wash paintings have fewer details, because the painter is trying to show something with just a few brushstrokes(笔画). Most ink-wash artists do not work as painters. They paint as a hobby. But a good ink-wash artist can still become famous.

April 22, 2024 marks the 55th World Earth Day This year's theme is "Planet vs. Plastics". There are about one million waste plastic bottles produced by us every minute, and people use more than 570 million plastic bags each hour. Plastic products make our life convenient. However, plastic rubbish has been found in deepest seas by scientists recently. Plastic pollution is damaging( 损 害 )our planet. So it's high time to pay attention to the problem of plastic pollution.

What can we do in our daily life to help solve the problem of plastic pollution?

I always bring my cloth shopping bag with me when I go shopping. I never use plastic shopping bags

I don't eat takeaway food because that often requires plastic boxes, spoons and forks They can be used only once.

When I go out, I always take my drinking bottle with me. I seldom buy drinks in plastic bottles

In my home, I seldom throw away plastic boxes, bags or bottles. I try to use them in other ways. For example, I store(存放) ice in big plastic bottles.

What can we do for plastic recycling?

There are several steps for you to follow before you put plastic waste in recyclable waste bins. For example, when you have an empty plastic bottle, you can first take off its cap. The bottle and the cap can be two different kinds of plastic so you'd better take them apart(分开) .

Then, make the bottle clean with water, especially the inside because there are always drinks or other things left. Lastly, crush(压扁) the bottle so that it can be easy to take and transport.

Rubbish  Classification(分类)

People need to divide rubbish into different groups before putting it in different rubbish bins. For example, plastic bottles belong to recyclable waste. They can be recycled to produce other products instead of being left on land.

Three steps in recycling a plastic bottle

Every small action counts when it comes to protecting our environment. Taking responsibility for reducing( 减 少 )plastic pollution not only helps the Earth but also sets a positive example for others to follow. Let's work together to keep our planet clean and healthy for ourselves and future generations.
