After opening a free online Harry Potter center in April, British writer JK·Rowling brings even more good news.

In May, Rowling started writing a new story called The Ickabog, which was free to read online to help amuse people who stayed at home because of COVID-19.

The new story centers around a monster (怪物) known as the Ickabog, a fierce child-eating monster who lives in the northern tip of an imaginary land known as Cornucopia and has super powers.

Though the book is written for children, it is also fascinating to adults. It talks about many things, such as weak leadership, and suppression (镇压) of disagreement.

"The Ickabog is a story about truth and the abuse (滥用) of power," Rowling wrote on the website. "The themes are timeless and could be used in any era or any country."

Rowling put the first two chapters online on May 26, with daily writing to follow until July 10.

The Letter That Changed a Life

A letter changed Levi Strauss's life. In 1849 gold was discovered in California. Thousands of people rushed to California in 1 of finding gold and becoming wealthy. The people hoping to find gold were foolish and greedy. One of those who headed for California was Levi Strauss. Strauss was different. Strauss was a clever, hard-working man. He was 2 a new start in life. Up to this time, Strauss had worked for his two brothers in New York City. The brothers sold clothes and blankets and other goods. Strauss planned to set up a 3 business to his brothers' in California.

Over the years, Strauss's business grew. In 1872 he got a letter from one of his customers, a tailor (裁缝) in Nevada. The tailor, Jacob Davis, had an idea for making better work pants. The pockets on work pants often tore. Jacob Davis 4 metal rivets (铆钉) to the pockets. Rivets are pieces of metal used to join things together. The rivets worked well, and the miners liked them. Davis didn't have enough money to get a patent for his invention. He also needed help making the pants. In his 5 Davis said that if they worked together, the two of them ‘‘could make a very large amount of money.''

Strauss could see that riveted work pants were a good idea. He agreed to help Davis. The two decided to make the pants. They decided to use denim cloth because it is a strong cloth that doesn't tear easily and is long lasting. 6 , the riveted denims were called ‘‘dungarees.'' Dungarees is a word from the Hindi language of India that means "rough cloth". Because they were tough and durable, dungarees were worn by thousands of farmers, miners, builders, and other workers. Later, dungarees came to be called "jeans". "Jeans" is a better name for the pants than "dungarees".

Life's a long, long journey.

Setting personal goals(目标) can give our life a sense of direction. Goal setting is used by top sports players, successful business people and high achievers in all fields. Before you set personal goals, think about what you want to achieve in your life. Try to set goals in some of the following categories(类别).

●Education — Will you achieve the educational goals after finishing high school? Are you still growing and learning?

●Family — What kind of relationship do you want with your parents and other family members?

●Occupation — What do you want to do when you grow up? What do you need to learn to make your dream come true?

●Pleasure — How do you want to enjoy yourself?

Write down the goals and think about them carefully. To help make the process easier, divide your goals into smaller tasks. For example, if you want to reach a main goal in five years, set a three-year goal, a one-year goal, a three-month goal and a one-month goal. Then create a daily To-Do List of things that you should do today. When a goal is achieved, take the time to enjoy your success. This helps you build the self-confidence.

Remember, your goals can change as time goes on. But be sure your goals are things you hope to achieve, not what your parents, family or teachers want.
