During the competition, the host read Chinese characters to the student, {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(explain) their meanings and gave example sentences. The student was required to write down the Chinese characters.

    In the final round of the competiton, the host read wanluan to Lu and said it {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (mean) graceful（优雅的）. "I had never heard that before!" said Lu. But she made a good guess. "Chinese characters meaning graceful often have '女' in {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (they), while many Chinese characters pronouncing luan have '亦'. So I wrote it down: '婉娈' ."

    Lu has good reading habits. "When others pay attention to the main idea of a(n) {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(story), she looks at how the author uses words and sentences to express himself or herself," said Su Yunsheng, Lu's Chinese teacher.
