How to learn English

How can you learn English well? Here are my suggestions.

The name of every British town and city has a long history. 

Two thousand years ago, most people living in Britain were Celts（凯尔特人）. Even the word "Britain" is Celtic. Then the Romans arrived and built camps. These camps became cities called "castra". This is why there are so many place names in England that end in "-chester" or "-caster". Manchester is one example. 

After the Romans left Britain, it was attacked by Anglo-Saxon people and became its new owners. These people were from the area that is now Germany and the Netherlands （荷兰）. The names of their villages often ended in "-ham" or "-ton". Some got their names from the leaders of the villages, so Birmingham, for example, means "Beormund's village". 

Twelve hundred years ago, Vikings（维京人） came to England. They traded with the Anglo-Saxons but lived in their own villages. These often ended in "-by" or "-thorpe". The name "Kirkby" means "a village with a church（教堂）" and Scunthorpe was the village of a man called Skuma. Finally, in 1066, England became Norman（诺曼人的）—the Normans gave us the place name "grange", which means "farm". 

And how about London? Experts cannot agree! The Romans called the city Londinium, but they were not the first people there. People once believed that the United Kingdom's capital city was named for the castle（城堡） of a king called Lud, but this is almost impossible. Our best guess today is that the name comes from a Celtic word meaning "a fast-flowing river". 

At the end of year 2022, the Singaporean government announced that all drinks sold locally must use nutritional grade labels (营养等级标签) A, B, C, or D on their packaging, marking the percentage of sugar and saturated fat (饱和脂肪) in the drinks. So recently several Singaporean drink companies have already started to put these labels on every drink. In March, 2024 Shanghai, China did the same. The labels are from A to D. The more sugar and saturated fat a drink has, the less healthy the drink is. 

A scientist named Charles had a strange idea. He wanted to invent a new kind of car which could go without a driver. It could also be used as a living room. That means you can go anywhere on your sofa in the car. You might say that it's impossible. But Charles succeeded in making it in a factory and named it Tridika.

Tridika has no wheels and it starts working when it reaches the magnetic levitation tracks(磁悬浮轨道). It takes its energy from the tracks. And it works in the same way as a magnetic train. It moves very fast. As everyone knows, cities are developing rapidly. There are more and more cars running on the road. So parking space is limited. Sometimes it's hard to find a place to park(停车). Tridika can solve this problem easily because it needn't park on the ground. Actually, it can part on the outside wall of the building with the help of an elevator system(电梯系统). In this way, much parking space can be saved. When Tridika parks itself in front of your apartment, you can get into your room directly. Of course, there must be a side door in the outside wall. Then Tridika becomes another living room. It's really amazing, isn't it?

Tridika can hold six passengers. So you can go on vacation in it with your family in your free time. Of course it can also be used as an office while you are travelling on the road. That is to say, you can travel and work at the same time.

Nowadays, many people have realized the importance of leadership（领导）skills. Poor leaders may cause many problems. But good leaders do better in solving problems than poor ones. Without good leaders, problems can't be solved. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} What's more, good leaders are good at cooperating with others. Usually, they are good listeners as well. But being good leaders isn't easy. So let me give you some suggestions to help you become a good leader. 

 {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Maybe nobody teaches you how to be a good leader, but you can learn it on your own. Read books about great leaders from home and abroad. By reading, you can learn a lot from their experiences and find out their secrets of success. Then you will be more confident of being a good leader. 

Learn from students' leaders in your school. There is no doubt that those leaders who are popular with the students in your school must have their advantages over others. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Take an active part in the activities organized by the excellent leaders and learn from them at once. Then you will know the answer. 

 {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Find the students that have the same interests as you have and start a club. Activities should be organized regularly in the club. When the members in your club have trouble in solving problems, you should communicate with them and find out the causes of the problems. Maybe what you have learned can be helpful. After the problems are solved, you can share pleasure with them. As time passes by, you will get more trust like those popular leaders. Sooner or later, you will be a good leader. 

 {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Get started before it's too late! As long as you keep trying, you will develop your leadership skills.

 Do you know Roma people? They were {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(普遍) known as Gypsies because they came from Egypt. For a long {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(时期) of time, they travered from place to place.

 Today, the Roma are living all over the world. They have kept their language and many {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(风俗). For example, it's important for Roma to marry other Roma and the parents usually {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(选择) the person their children will marry.

 Romany is the language Roma people used in their {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(日常的) lives. However, because the Roma have moved a lot, their language has developed in many different ways. So, it is without {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (疑问) that Roma in one part of the world can hardly understand Roma from another part.

 Roma music is famous around the world, as many Roma throughout history have been musicians. Their music has a great {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(影响) on many other kinds of music, like classical and jazz.

 Roma don't usually assimilate(同化) into host countries, as governments {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(阻止) them from marrying the {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(当地) people. They even can't travel or wear their traditional clothes. They have been {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(对待) as slaves(奴隶) and forced to change their names.

 But today, the Roma are finding ways to live peacefully with others while keeping their own culture."There is a will within us to continue to live as a people," says George Kaslov, "All the other ethnic (种族) groups who came to America assimilate gradually with time going, but not the Roma. We hold out."
