Some children were working in a wheat (小麦) field. Some worked hard and some didn't. But one small boy just ran here and there after the butterflies and sang happily.

In the evening, an angel (天使) came and said to the children, "Come now to the gate, and bring your sheaves (小麦捆) with you."

So the children came, bringing their sheaves, but the boy that had run after the butterflies, came empty-handed.

"No one can enter here without sheaves," the angel told him.

Hearing that, the small boy lowered his head.

Then all the other children cried out together. One said, "Dear Angel, let him in! In the morning I was sick and this boy came and played with me, and showed me the butterflies. Also, he gave me one of sheaves, and I would give it to him again."

Another said, "Dear Angel, let him in! At noon I fainted (昏倒) and fell down. This boy brought me water, and then he showed me the butterflies until I felt better. To me he also gave one of his sheaves, and I would give it to him again."

And a third said, "Just now, as evening was coming, I was tired and I couldn't go on working. But this boy comforted me, showed me the butterflies, and gave me one of his sheaves." And the other children said with one voice, "We also had sheaves of him, dear angel. Let him in!"The angel smiled, and reached his hand inside the gate and brought out a pile of sheaves. 阅读短文,回答下列问题。

Once there were four beggars (乞丐). One day, they met at an old temple at night. They were very upset because none of them had much to eat.

"I only got this piece of meat today." the first said. "I almost got nothing," the second said, "I just picked up a potato outside the vegetable store during the day." The third said that all he had was a small bottle of salt. The fourth beggar had not done much better, "I only got some old beans, but they aren't very nice!"

As they sat around the fire, the beggar with only a bottle of salt had a great idea "Let's put all our things together and boil them. In this way, we can make a tasty dish and share it." They all agreed. However, the first beggar thought, "I don't want to share. I'll just pretend to throw my meat into the pot. They'll never know and I'll eat my meat alone later." So he pretended to put the meat into the pot. And at the same time the other beggars had similar ideas to him. At that time, the temple was too dark for the beggars to see what the others were doing.

Finally, one of them suggested that the dish should be ready and, in turn, each of them helped himself to it. They drank the hot water in silence, learning that selfishness (自私) doesn't taste all that good.

We arrived at our new house in the city. I took my dog Max with me. Grandpa offered to keep Max on his farm, but I refused. Although I would visit Grandpa every weekend, I couldn't give up Max for five days a week! Dad and Mom started cleaning the new house right away, and I took a chain (链条), tied it to Max's collar (颈圈) and walked him to the yard. I felt sorry as he looked at me with sad eyes. He wanted to run freely.

At last Friday came, and we packed to go to the farm. "Let's walk Max to the car," Mom said, tying the chain to his collar.

As soon as Mom opened the door, Max ran away. Mom and I jumped into the car and caught up to him, who was running beside the road with his tongue sticking out. Then he rushed into the road. A coming car came to a sudden stop. Mom shouted "Sorry" to the driver. We ran after Max all the way to the park before he was ready to get in the car.

Finally, we got back to Grandpa's farm. Returning to this old place, Max seemed to be back to his happy days. He ran across the field, leaving the vegetables in a mess. He barked at the chickens and scared them to fly in every direction and ran after the birds. "He loves the life on the farm, doesn't he?" laughed Grandpa. I pretended (假装) not to hear it.

When we got ready to leave on Sunday, Max's eyes no longer shone. As we walked him to our car, he tried to run away. This time, I held the chain tightly (紧紧地). However, my heart tightened at his sad sounds-he was begging! ____▲____. As I watched Max run to the farm, I couldn't help crying. Mom said, "Dear, this is what love is all about."

The Picture of Peace

When Mike was seven, he knew his dream was to be a photographer. He kept working on it for years. Recently, he was trying to take a picture of a sunset(日落) to enter the school1 competition.

"Mom,it has been cloudy these days. I don't think I can get this picture!" Mike complained.

"Why not use one of your photos on the computer?" suggested Mom.

"I can't-the rules say the photos have to be taken with a traditional camera. We hand in a roll of film, it gets developed(冲洗胶卷), and we2 one photo for the competition. "

"Why is a sunset so important?" Mom asked.

"The3 of the competition is peace," Mike explained, "and I feel most peaceful seeing a sunset. "

Zach, his six-year-old brother came out of the bedroom. " Hey, you want to take a picture of me? Look!" He put both arms over his head.

"Not right now, " said Mike, laughing.

That very afternoon, Mike felt excited when he saw clear skies. He carefully lined up his shot(镜头) and waited4 till the sun reached the ground.

"That's it! Perfect!" he shouted cheerfully.

The next morning, Mike noticed he could take one more picture to complete the roll of film, so he walked into Zach's room. Zach was 5 quietly with a teddy bear under his arm. Mike didn't wake Zach up, and carefully took a picture of him.

A week later, Mike got the photos. The sunset picture was the one he was most6 to see. There it was! It was as nearly perfect as Mike had expected.

Then, he looked through the other photos. Suddenly,he stopped. His eyebrows(眉毛) rose as he 7 the photo of Zach. He looked back at the photo of the sunset,which seemed less perfect now. He 8 the two choices. Finally, he decided to hand in the photo of Zach for the competition.
