It was about two o'clock in the early morning. I was sleeping when the earthquake started. At first，I felt a little shake. Then I1 a loud noise like thunder（雷声）. 

Soon the real noise came，like bombs（爆炸）under the2 . The building began to shake hard. People shouted and ran out of the building. I tried my best to3 out too，but I could not. Outside，people were running everywhere4 pieces of glass and bricks（砖）were falling down. Then the walls began to come down too!

Finally，the noise and shaking5 . It was dark and silent around me. I could see6 ，and I did not know if anyone else was near me. I felt afraid and my heart was beating fast. I knew I was in danger，but I told myself to7 . 

I shouted for help，but no one came. I started to feel my way through the dark. Luckily，there was just8 space for me to move. 

Hours later，as I was9 to find my way out，I suddenly heard some noise above me. I shouted，"Help!Please help!I'm here!"Then I heard shouts from excited people. They10 moved away the bricks. At last，I saw the bright daylight. I was safe. 

I found my cat Lucky in the street. Once I went to a store and bought some bread. Unluckily, it started to rain on the way. I didn't take {#blank#}1{#/blank#}（雨伞）with me. So I ran to a tree. Suddenly, I saw a little cat fall from the tree. Although she was very dirty. I {#blank#}2{#/blank#}（选择）to take her home. My dad said the cat was lucky to live with a family like ours, so we call her Lucky. She usually sat {#blank#}3{#/blank#}（舒服地）on the sofa. We gave her the {#blank#}4{#/blank#}（新鲜的）food. One night, when all of us went to sleep, a small fire started in our kitchen. The cat Lucky didn't go {#blank#}5{#/blank#}（任何地方）. Instead, she went straight {#blank#}6{#/blank#}（通过）the door to my parents' room and started to scream loudly. She {#blank#}7{#/blank#}（成功）in saving our lives. What a {#blank#}8{#/blank#}（了不起的）cat! She played an important {#blank#}9{#/blank#}（角色）in our life. We really thank Lucky for saving our lives. Look! She is {#blank#}10{#/blank#}（等待）for me now.

 What do teenagers(青少年) usually do after school? Are today's teenagers lazy?

A survey(调查) shows that today teenagers spend fifty hours doing after-school activities, homework, and housework. Jessica Watson, 14, isn't surprised. "I go to school from 8:30 a. m. to 3:30  p. m. But after school I don't go home or watch TV. I'm in the school volleyball club and I have to practice on Tuesdays and Fridays. I also take dance classes on Thursdays."

 At home, Jessica spends a lot of time doing homework. "I have to do two or three hours of homework every night," says Jessica. This is normal for teenagers today. On average(平均), they spend about nine hours a week doing homework.

 Jessica also helps with the housework. "My parents often get home late. I have to clean the house. Mom does the shopping and the cooking, and Dad washes the dishes."

 On Saturdays and Sundays, Jessica works in a clothes store. "Mom and Dad don't give me money, so I have to work to get money for CDs and going out with my friends."

Jessica is unhappy when adults say teenagers are lazy. "Adults think we watch TV, listen to music, and use the phone all the time. But this isn't true. I enjoy doing those things, but I do a lot of other things, too."

There are many ways to help improve your health like eating healthy food. Taking exercise and getting medical help. But the easiest and cheapest way to improve your health is just to sleep eight hours or more every night. The general sleeping rule is that the younger you are，the longer sleep you need. But regardless of（不管）age，some people need to sleep more while for some a few hours is enough. 

 ① .  According to the World Health Organization over half the people in the world may be sleep﹣deprived(睡眠不足的). Having less sleep not only makes people feel tired but also causes accidents. In the United States alone, sleepy drivers cause at least 100, 000 traffic accidents a year. Also sleep problems can cause medical problems such as high blood pressure. 

 ② . Why are so many people sleep-deprived? Part of the reasons may be cultural. In the American culture, people put a higher value on work than on sleep. In fact, people who sleep a lot are usually seen as "lazy". Also, you can sometimes hear some people say proudly that they don't have much time to sleep. They only sleep four or five hours a night. It seems that the less you sleep，the more work you'll do. 

 ③ . How do we teach these people to learn the value of sleep? Perhaps they may listen to the advice of Dr. James Maas, an expert in sleep. He says, "Sleep is like a credit （信用卡） card. When you sleep less, you are only borrowing time. You always have to pay it back. The more hours you don't sleep, the more hours you should sleep to 'pay back' the hours on your 'sleep credit card. '"

 ④ . For those who value work more than sleep, they should listen to what a famous person once said. " Don't think you will be doing less work because you sleep during the night. That is a foolish idea which is held by people who have no imagination. You will be able to do more. "

 Nature is full of power but nature is sometimes very interesting. Let's take some plants as an example(例子).

Monster Flower

 The monster flower is the name of the plant. It has the biggest flower in the world. To peo- ple, the plant's smell is really bad! But bees and other insects(昆虫) love this smell. And that helps the plant!

Giant Tree

 Most trees are tall. But the tallest trees in the world are red wood trees. These trees are slow growers. It takes them 500 years to grow very, very tall and very wide. Redwood trees are 300 feet tall. That's about as tall as a stack(一堆) of 40 school buses! Redwoods are 30 feet wide. That's about as wide as 3 school buses side by side.

Pitcher Plant

 The pitcher plant traps insects. This plant smells nice. Insects like its smell. But when an in- sect climbs onto the pitcher plant, the insect slips into the the pitcher plant. Quickly, the pitcher plant catches it!

Sundew Plant

 Insects love the leaves' smell of the sundew plant. But when an insect creeps or lands on a sundew' s leaf, the insect can't get away. The leaves are sticky. The insect is stuck(粘住).
