How Reading Improves My English

Reading plays an important role in my English learning. 

The speech bubble* is a way to show words spoken by characters in comics* or cartoons. The birth of the speech bubble was in the seventeenth century in England. Since then, it has been used together with drawn characters. At that time, cartoonists used the speech bubble sometimes. A cartoon called Hogan's Alley began to use it all the time in 1895. In Japan, they still had to wait until the 1930s to have the speech bubble. 

A speech bubble usually has two parts – the bubble and the tail. The bubble has the messages that the character wants to express. The tail helps tell who has spoken the words. So the tail is always pointed to the character. If a character can't be seen in the picture, the tail may be pointed towards the bubble itself.

There are diverse speech bubbles. One of the most common bubbles is the thought bubble. It usually shows what the character is thinking about or an idea in a cloud-shaped or square bubble. How about expressing strong feelings? The jagged edge bubble can help to show anger or excitement. But when you want to make your character express a secret or just whisper some words, a bubble with dashed lines may be the best choice. One of the funniest bubbles is the wavy bubble with a wavy tail. It sends readers the message that the character is so tired.

The speech bubble is necessary for expressing spoken dialogues. Comic artists must carefully choose and place it in order to express the proper meaning and not to puzzle the reader. The proper use helps bring characters on the paper to life, for they have a "voice".

Tom and Mike were good friends, and they began to work in a company together the same year. They both worked hard. After several years, however, the boss made Mike manager (经理) but Tom was still an office worker. Tom couldn't stand it, so he handed a letter to his boss, saying that he decided to resign (辞职) his job because the boss didn't value his hard work at all.

The boss knew that Tom worked very hard for years. He thought for a moment and said, "I hope you will do one more thing for our company before you leave. Perhaps you will change your mind." Tom agreed. The boss asked him to go and find out if there was anyone who sold water-melons in the market. Tom returned soon. He said he had found a man selling watermelons. The boss asked the price of the watermelons. Tom shook his head and went back to the market again. When he returned, he told the boss it was $2 for each kilo.

The boss told Tom to wait for a moment in his office, and he called Mike in. He asked Mike to find if there was anyone selling watermelons in the market. Later Mike returned and said, "Only one man is selling watermelons, $2 for each kilo. He has 100 watermelons in all. Every watermelon weighs about 2 kilos. They were brought here two days ago, pretty fresh and sweet." Tom got to know the difference between Mike and himself. He decided not to resign his job any more.

 When most schools around the world are trying to bring more technology into the classroom, Sweden is doing something1 . They' re spending a lot of money buying new textbooks for students, and they' re 2 more paper books for schools.

 Sweden used to be one of the earliest countries to bring3 into schools. But now, the Swedish minister(部长) for schools, Lotta Edholm,4 to see more pens, pencils and paper. She thinks that paper books are more important for students learning. It's said that they will also 5 stop using digital(数字的) learning for kids under six.

A study shows that the fourth grade students in Sweden did worse in 6 between 2022 and 2023. Technology might not be the 7 for this, but the country decided to make children8 more time on quiet reading, handwriting and real books. Some experts also say there is too much digital learning. That can make learning9 , not easier. If students use the computer too much, they might find information that isn't true on the Internet. They want schools to go back to using printed textbooks and teachers'10 . What's more, paper books are also good for students' eyes.

If you go to a club and pay to hear someone tell funny stories, there is a performance called "stand-up". Stand-up comedy (单口喜剧) started in Britain and the US more than 150 years ago. It has come a long way in the West, but it is a new kind of TV show in China. More and more young people began watching stand-up comedy, and some even started doing it part-time. Unlike the Western's, the Chinese stand-up comedy is much shorter, lasting five to ten minutes long.

So far, the most popular one in China is Stand-up Comedy 2024 on the Internet. More than 50 performers from China and abroad join the show. A graduate (研究生) talks about the problems when he is looking for jobs. A British man tells his funny stories while living in China. A grandpa shares what happened to him and his children when they live together. Their colorful stories and different ideas on life put wonder into this season's program. The show is such a big success that it has opened a door to the golden age of stand-up comedy.

Today there are stand-up clubs around the world. Why is stand-up comedy so popular? Because people think it is simple and fun. All you need is one person to stand up and make the whole room laugh. The performers are telling their own stories in a straightforward (直接的) and funny way, which makes people forget about their worries and leave a big smile on their faces. So if you're looking for a good time full of laughter, choose stand-up comedy.
